Zagreb Tunnel
350 meters long, built during 1944. You enter on both sides – East and West of the Upper Town Grič. Nothing mysterious about it.
Still, the tunnel never ceases to amaze me. When you see a light at the end of the tunnel, some subconscious images appear, that normally only pop up in dreams. Maybe that is why the tunnel is constantly astonishing. It is neither the longest, nor the narrowest or the widest, or anything else. However, when I walk past the entrance and look at the darkness inside - with a small light dot at the end, I have to enter; I keep coming in and out. It is a contrast. It is allegorical. It is an empty space in the body of the Upper Town; it is not roaming, not going anywhere. It is not a passage. It was made to be entered, to stay inside and wait for the door to reopen, for a ray of light or, at night, a breath of fresh air.
Occasionally, very briefly, it served to protect one great treasure, something most precious that exists. What do you think that is?
BestofZagreb wishes you happy holidays and a happy new year 2021!
