A Sparkling Conversation

Looking for a good Hungarian sparkling wine to make the holidays, well, sparkle? Scott Alexander Young shares his top three bubbly picks for ringing in the New Year: http://ow.ly/3jnFX

Today let’s talk about something close to every Budapest Boulardevier’s heart. Bubbly! Fizz! Bottled effervescence! Or as they call it here - Peszgő. That ladies and gentlemen is the Hungarian word for ‘sparkling’, as in bubbly, as in sparkling wine.

On the eve of Szent Mikulás

Hó, hó, hó! śnieg! Just in time for St. Nicholas day. Remember to polish and put your boots out for Mikulás / Mikołaj on Sunday night, a tradition still going strong around these parts: http://bit.ly/hD7aVf

On the eve of Saint Nicholas, December 5, Croatian and Hungarian children's homes fill with excitement. Shoes and boots are polished, then placed out in hopes that they will be kindly filled by Sveti Nikola (as he's called in Croatian) or Szent Mikulás (his name in Hungarian).

Hungarian Cook: Gingerbread - Traditional Hungarian Christmas honey cookie

This gorgeous snowfall is getting us in the Christmas baking mood: http://ow.ly/3i1eD

We bake gingerbread every year with my children when Christmas is approaching. This is a festive and traditional biscuit in Hungary. The gingerbread-making tradition goes back for centuries. Ginger is totally omitted from Hungarian gingerbread. It's actually a honey biscuit with cinnamon and cloves.

A Feast for all the Senses

Eating out in Budapest: http://bit.ly/boopFl

In my last couple of posts we’ve talked about enjoying mulled wine, hearty sausages and goat’s cheese at Christmas markets across Central Europe. It occurred to me that some readers might think that’s all there is available to eat in Budapest, for example. Fat-suppurating, artery-hardening stodge...

A couple weeks back we stole a march on Christmas by looking at the largest and one of the most atmospheric Christmas markets in Central Europe. That would be the market on Krakow’s main square. But every Central European capital and many smaller sized cities host Christmas markets.
