Good Morning from Budapest! A serene morning by the Danube, with the statue of our beloved poet " József Attila" ( in Hungarian practice the family name precedes the given name) in quiet contemplation. The water level reached 764 cm early in the morning, reminding us of the river's power.
Despite the flood, Budapest's spirit remains strong and peaceful.

Shoes on the Danube – Now Underwater

Due to the flooding, the Shoes Memorial on the Danube in Budapest is currently submerged. This deeply moving site honors the memory of Jewish victims who were tragically shot into the river during WWII. Over time, the shoes are slowly deteriorating, and in the coming decades – unless restored – they may disappear. Their message will be most poignant when only the rusted remains are left, reminding us of the importance of remembering.

As you enjoy Budapest’s beauty, let’s take a moment to reflect on this powerful part of history.

Check out this powerful mural by Színes Város Csoport on the Buda side of Budapest, honoring Hanna Szenes, a true hero! Located at 78 Frankel Leó Street, just across from the Frankel Leó street synagogue her family attended, this 130-square-meter artwork is no coincidence. It commemorates her bravery as a poet and paratrooper who fought to save Hungarian Jews during WWII. Six artists worked for 10 days to bring this incredible tribute to life. Next time you're in the area, don't miss this beautiful piece of history!

Did you know? When the iconic Elizabeth Bridge was completed in 1903, it was the largest chain bridge in the world! Sadly, it didn’t survive WWII, as German forces destroyed it. The rebuilt version we see today is wider, but there's still an interesting quirk: to navigate around the historic Inner City Parish Church, the road takes a unique twist, creating a sharp curve that directs traffic in both directions. Next time you cross, keep an eye out for this little piece of history in motion!
