Budapest's alternative spaces are more than mere venues; they're centers of community, resistance, collaboration and artistry. In all of these locations you can find yourself sipping refreshing drinks surrounded by a diverse blend of Budapest.

AURÓRA: Nestled amidst the raw textures of the VIII District, Auróra beckons to those who yearn for authenticity over touristic sheen.
Address: Auróra utca 11
Website: auroraonline.hu
GÓLYA: Step into Gólya and you're immediately welcomed into a realm of art and activism. We recommend attending one of their film nights or trying out their delicious local brews amidst thought-provoking conversations. The original Gólya Presszó was located in another part of district 8, but in the past few years the team behind this iconic cultural space has reestablished themselves in their new location, a multi-level hub of cutting edge art with frequent parties in a gritty, cavernous space.
Address: Kazán Közösségi Ház
http://golyaszovetkezet.hu/
KISÜZEM: A favored haunt for local creatives, you're likely to stumble upon an impromptu musical performance or an intriguing art installation. Their drink menu, consisting of both local and international options, is a must-try. They have delicious sandwiches and a rotated selection of soups and bar snacks. The quality of the food is much better than you would expect from a watering hole. Epic rum and whiskey list and a nice selection of cold beers. A place that never goes out of style, and is worth checking out at any time of day.

Today we are profiling some awesome pieces by the legend
As always he is mashing up classic Hungarikum animation with global pop culture.
Up first is a riff on the early 15th century masterpiece “The Arnofilni Portrait” by early Dutch renaissance master Jan van Eyck. Mark mixes this classic with “Frakk, a macskák réme” aka the terror of cats. The 70’s and 80’s classic features a Hungarian Vizsla dog and his antagonistic relationship with Aunt Irma’s two cats. Genius!
Number 2 borrows from legendary Hungarian painter Szinyei Merse Pál and his wonderful vision of a may picnic. But instead of 19th century European romantics, Mark uses the felines from celebrated Hungarian animation macskafogó. Inspired.
Last but not least we have the instantly recognizable American Gothic pose, but rather than American plains farmers it is Kukori és Kotkoda who take center stage. These early 70’s animated favorites are a married couple who constantly bicker as if they were humans rather than fowl. Sensational combination.
Thanks as always Mark for keeping our streets so interesting.

Lángos in its most elemental form is a fairly simple dish. A glistening pocket of fried dough is filled with sour cream, shredded cheese, garlic and sometimes if you are feeling exotic, purple onion and paprika dust.

Most Hungarians have some combination of the previously listed ingredients which they mix and match depending on mood, time of day, number of beers consumed, etc.

And you can get those types of toppings at Retro Lángos. But you can also choose from a laundry list of different combinations and ingredients that one would never imagine on the dish. Their list reads quite similarly to a Hungarian pizza menu with classic parlor options such as Mexikói (chili bean ragu and cheese) and Sonkàs (sliced turkey cold cuts, chopped paprika and tomato.

There is a whole razzmatazz of different combos to sample as well as a dessert langos with Nutella if you are feeling particularly unconscionable.

Whatever you pick, this crispy, golden-fried dough topped with an assortment of toppings is sure to satisfy your hunger pangs.

🍷🥖🧀Step back in time and savor Hungarian tapas in a 19th-century-style wine house. combines rustic charm with a fine selection of wines and small bites, creating a cozy and welcoming environment for all who enter. It’s in District VIII as well, so could be a great place to have a couple of drinks and bites after finishing one of our off-the-beathen-path District VIII 8 tours.

Cintányéros is the least deserving of the word “restaurant” on this list, but it is definitely deserving of immense praise. In a narrow, lofted space, incredibly knowledgeable bartenders preside over a litany of high-end wines and cocktail ingredients at affordable prices. Drinks-wise they specialize in fröccs which is taken far more seriously here than you ever thought wine mixed with soda could be taken.

As for the food, they do mostly small bites here. Well, they are small bites in theory. But after finishing the beef tartar, served with the freshest and most high-quality meat you could hope for, and a well portioned out selection of accouterments (pads of butter, spicy paprika, onions, tomato), you would have a hard time even thinking about the word small.

This is a real hidden gem in Budapest and is great for just drinks as well, but you can get some serious insight into the culture of classic bar food which is difficult to do in a high-quality setting such as this.

Budapest is, has been, and always will be a MARKET town. Tourists usually know to check out the Great Market Hall, one of the most notable indoor markets in all of Europe (and arguably the most beautiful with its gleaming green and yellow Zsolnay tile roof). And while it certainly is one of this city’s many pearls, there are so many other fantastic markets that should not be missed.

Locals do their shopping at markets. Young and old flock to the vegetable and fruit-laden stalls brimming with the freshest cabbage, crunchiest paprika, and juiciest tomatoes which come from every corner of the country. Friendly vendors who are the lifeblood of these mainstays converse with regulars who have been shopping there for decades. Skilled butchers stand behind rows of spicy kolbasz from Békescsaba proudly hawking their cuts of every cut of meat you could possibly dream of. And pickles, pickles, pickles galore! Everything that once grew apparently must then be pickled. Cucumbers of course, but also everything from carrots, and luscious purple onions, to cauliflower and even mini watermelons.

The rows and rows and rows of produce shine their brightest on weekend mornings when these havens of agricultural goodness are at their fullest pomp.

Here is a list of our 9 other favorites to supplement your visit. Just bookmark this post, pop the names in Google maps and then follow your nose and eyes to the freshest food in town:

🍉Rákóczi Square Market: Genuine Hungarian vibe, lesser-known to tourists.

🍋Szimpla Farmers' Market: Organic produce and crafts at Szimpla Kert on Sunday morning.

🥒Hunyadi Square Market: Open-air freshness.

🥬Klauzál Square Market: Tradition meets modern in the Jewish Quarter.

🧄Bosnyák Square Market: Dive into local shopping routines.

🌽Lehel Market: Bustling indoor market in a bizarre Post modern construction.

🍓Fény Street Market: Vibrant open-air market near Széll Kálmán tér.

🥡Monori Center: Dubbed as "Budapest's Chinatown", a hub for Asian businesses.

🌶Teleki téri piac: A traditional market capturing the essence of Budapest.

Kabin season is here. One of our all time favorite summer, beach bars, just a stone’s throw away from the downtown on the famous Népsziget aka the people’s island. It’s sandwiched between district IV “Újpest” and district XIII. Nowadays there are plenty of bars on this treasured isle, but remains our favorite, ideally situated just beside an iconic green railroad bridge that connects across to the ancient wonders of the Roman shore.

The weather is getting warmer and that means it’s Romai-part season. The Roman shore is home to an absolute smorgasbord of riverside pubs, restaurants and chill out spots. And the pick of the litter, at least as far as we are concerned, is none other than Culture Bistro and pub.
It’s hard to really define the place - it’s a pub, beach bar, restaurant and spontaneous concert venue all rolled up into one. And it’s whimsical, circus themed aesthetic is an absolute favorite for local residents. This is one of the spots that many tourists miss out on, and we certainly don’t want that to be you.
So head on down into district three, to a river bank that has witnessed summertime pleasure since the days of Ancient Pannonia.
We might even see you there; it really is one of our all time faves.

is a local designers' community. It is located right around the corner from the Astoria metro station, housed in a more then 100-year-old mansion built by János Wagner in 1894. From 1980 it served as an elegant shopping plaza called Paloma, then in 2014 became the home of Hungarian creatives.

Instead of shop assitants the designers themselves serve the customers in each showroom. They can give you detailed and relevant information about their products, their workshop or their designing process.
Amazon place which we highly recommend to tourists and locals alike.

What do a murdered squirrel, a tiny tank and a Hungarian puppet have in common? No, this isn’t some weird riddle; they are all the artistic antics of aka Mihály Kolodko, a guerilla sculptor, a Ukrainian citizen with Hungarian origins, who was born in the Transcarpathian city of Uzhhorod (Ungvár).

Like Pokemon, his mini statues keep popping up throughout the city, so be on the lookout for the next whimsical installations. We have no idea what Kolodko will think of next but we are excited to find out. In this article, we’re going to look at some of Mihály Kolodko’s prominent mini statues.
In the article in the comments you will find a comprehensive map indicating all these mini statues.

🔥✈️ 5+1 mistakes tourists make while visiting Budapest
Mistake 1: sightseeing with the hop on hop off bus… it’s expensive and relatively boring. Tram 2 skirts the banks of the Danube on the Pest side and even passes the magnificent parliament. A self guided tour for a fraction of the price!
Mistake 2: “tourist menus”
A tourist menu is basically an expensive one – maybe double or even triple what a local would pay for relatively simple dishes. You’ll see plenty of these advertised on and the around the major tourist streets like Váci Street. Instead head to a local canteen for a much cheaper and tastier meal.
Mistake 3: Only going to Széchenyi, Gellért or Rudas bath
Dandár (pictured), Veli Bej, Dagály, are all great options with a much more local vibe. And, again, much cheaper.
Mistake 4: only going to the “Jewish quarter”.
Look, we adore district vii, but Budapest has 23 districts and so many more opportunities to see and absorb culture. District XIII is a great place to start (pictured), which also has a huge Jewish cultural history if that’s what you are looking for.
Mistake 5: only visiting the Great Market Hall.
Budapest is a city brimming with markets. And while it’s called the “Great” market for a reason - it is pretty damn great - it would be a shame to ignore the other markets which have a much more authentic and local flair to them.
Bonus mistake: only visiting Szimpla ruin pub
Szimpla is unique. That’s true. But Budapest has so many more awesome little pubs with much more of a chilled out and low key vibe where you can organically observe the atmosphere of the city. Fekete Kutya, on dob utca (pictured), is a terrific choice. The full list is longer than Instagram has room for.

Buda is more than just the Castle District, but many visitors tend to ignore this side of the river beyond the area surrounding the Royal Palace. However, there is a different, more exciting side that all visitors should be sure to check out, especially in the glorious days of late spring and early summer. The neighborhood in question is the legendary Bartók Béla Avenue .
This boulevard stretching from the Gellért Hotel to Kelenföld train station has become a hub of cool cafes, trendy bars, fun restaurants, and private art galleries. You won’t find the hordes of tourists strolling the wide boulevard, but rather Hungarian locals into the local arts and gastronomy scene.
Some years back, Bartók Béla, named after the famous 20th century Hungarian composer, was a quieter, residential part of the city with a few classic cafes and some pretty buildings. Now it’s arguably the locus of artistic and creative life in all of Budapest.
We’ve collected all of our favorite spots and places to check out, from charismatic coffee shops, such as (picture 1), to thought provoking art galleries (picture 4 featuring the work of ), to the charming and peaceful bookend offered by the “bottomless” lake, Feneketlen-tó (final picture).
No matter your age, interests or budget you can find something mesmerizing along the pearl of District XI, Bartók Béla út.
Head to this link for a full rundown of all The best spots: https://budapestflow.com/buda-upcoming-neighbourhood-bartok-bela-avenue/

One of our very favorite establishments in the whole city is on Nagy Diófa Utca. It’s without a doubt the best English language bookshop in all of Budapest, brimming with rare volumes on everything from 18th century Eastern European poetry to 1980’s popular fantasy to obscure travelogues from African travel writers. The shop is run by a wonderful local named Judit and is exactly the type of business we love to highlight on our tours. Authentic, local, and filled with artistic inspiration. Make sure you stop by for a coffee, a book and a tasty pastry if you want to experience bohemian life in Budapest for real.

No matter how you feel about Budapest’s famous ruin bars, there is no denying that they have made a huge impact on cultural life here. But did you know that before they became hedonistic magnets for pub crawling tourists, they served as cultural hubs for bohemian locals.
That was particularly true of the world famous pictured here. The story is that In the early 2000s, the inner part of the VII District was made up of crumbling, abandoned buildings. Once the site of the Jewish ghetto, the historic Jewish Quarter became dilapidated in the decades following World War II, after the deportation of 10,000s Jews. In 2002, the guys behind Szimpla opened up the very first venue on Kertész utca – where you’ll find the Szimpla Café today. However, the real kick happened in 2004, when Ábel Zsendovits and his friends decided to gamble on a condemned building complex on Kazinczy street, which marked the start of the legendary ruin bar we all know and love today.

Szimpla began as a small experiment, a bar set up in an abandoned buildin offering affordable drinks for the young and creative crowd in Budapest. Szimpla became a bohemian hub after the crumbling building got spruced up with local design and vintage, mismatched furniture. Its chaos and eclecticism has turned it into one of the world’s most famous bars.
On our ruin pubs you’ll get to know the backstory of Budapest’s most intriguing district, learning about its former inhabitants, it’s tragic downfall during and after WWII and how it managed to rise from the ashes as the epicentre of Budapest’s nightlife and alternative arts scene.
Aside from dipping into the city’s drinking scene, we’ll also check out all the other things that make this district one of the city’s most vibrant.
Go with the flow, and click the link below to learn more about the history of Budapest’s famous ruin bars.

Today we want to shine the spotlight on one of our favorite and most underrated street artists in Hungary: .budapest
He uses his designs to mix and mash Hungarian cultural references with Hollywood pop culture. Case in point, picture number one of this post is his signature piece, a crossover between the globally iconic Knight Rider and “Taki bácsi” from “Szomszédok”, a Hungarian TV show from the 80s (The Neighbours).
In addition to showcasing the big, bright and beautiful full length wall murals, our street art city tour is all about educating guests on the hidden facets of Hungarian culture with the smaller scale but no less mesmerizing stickers and spray paint which makes downtown Budapest such a sight to behold.
