Balinese Galungan and Kuningan Celebration
Galungan

balinese galungan celebration

Galungan is one of the various types of festivities celebrated by Hindus in Bali. For this celebration, Balinese Hindus perform various religious activities.

Galungan is a special day to celebrate the victory of the Dharma (goodness) against the Adharma (evil) through the blessing of Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa or God Almighty.

It is celebrated by Hindus every 210 days according to Balinese calendar calculations, called “Buddha Kliwon Dungulan” (Wednesday). The celebration is held for 10 consecutive days.

Galungan itself comes from the old Javanese language which means ‘prevail’. And also the word of “Galungan” has similar mining to “Dungulan” which means “triumph”. Galungan celebration has also another meaning which is to commemorate the creation of the universe and all its contents.

On this day the Hindus will head to the temples around their neighborhood. Balinese people who are Hindus will wear traditional clothes with white colors. Women will bring offerings in their heads. For Hindus who have died family members and have been buried, they must bring offerings to the grave.

When you are on holiday in Bali while the Hindus celebrating Galungan then you will find many “penjor” decorations on the side of the road or in front of people house. Penjor itself is a bamboo pole that rises to eight meters high and equipped with coconut leaves and ornaments from crops such as fruits, rice, corn, coconut, leaves and others.

Installing penjor itself has a meaning to represent gratitude for the prosperity and welfare that has been given by Hyang Widhi Wasa (The God). The end of Galungan Day Celebration is Kuningan Day. Galungan Day itself is believed to be the day when the gods descended to earth and Kuningan Day is the day when the gods returned to heaven.

The Galungan celebration will always be rousing. So for those who are on vacation in Bali and coinciding with the Galungan day celebration, can see the ceremony lively

Night of Siwa
Siwa Ratri, often referred to as the ‘night of Siwa’, is an auspicious time for introspection and meditation, during which the Balinese pray for forgiveness of their earthly sins and for support and strength from the god Siwa (Shiva) in order to reach their higher selves. Part of these rituals involve fasting and staying awake all night, so Siwa Ratri is also known as the longest night. Siwa Ratri is celebrated during the new moon of the 7th month of the Balinese calendar and there are a series of ritual observances throughout the day.

The philosophy of Siwa Ratri can be traced back to a folk story of a lone hunter named Lubdaka. Lubdaka was out hunting and got lost in the wilderness. The sun set and he was in the dark, alone so he climbed a tree to avoid wild animals. He was afraid of falling from the tree if he fell asleep, so he began picking leaves and dropping them into a pond below while chanting prayers to god Shiva. He stayed awake all night and got home safely the next day.

When Lubdaka died, he was greeted by Shiva in the afterlife and his bad deeds were erased because he meditated to Shiva that night. Siwa Ratri (the night of Shiva) is remembered by meditating, staying awake and fasting. The meaning behind these practices is to remind the Balinese to remain vigilant and always keep the gods in mind when navigating through the symbolic darkness of the night.

Siwa Ratri begins with an early morning prayer, typically ending at 6:00am. The ritual typically consists of three fasting activities:

Upawasa: not eating or drinking for 24 hours
Fasting is a method of self-control and reflection to reach spiritual enlightenment.

Monabrata: not talking for 12 hours
Silence is a method to learn not to speak impulsively and to choose honest, kind words; not to speak evil or lie; and to learn to listen more attentively.

Mejagra: not sleeping for 36 hours
Not sleeping is a technique to train being awake and aware of our approach to life which should always be carried out with conduct of insight and wisdom.

The Siwa Ratri celebration also aims to overcome materialism and to build a closer connection with God through surrender and prayer. Each of these (non-)activities are methods to learn to be self-conscious at all times, to have self-control in all circumstances. When completed, each of them is followed by prayers and offerings in the house temple.

▪️Dwarapala Statue▪️

Somewhere (mostly in The Temple) in Bali you may have seen 👀those 2 scare face statues with eyes bulging, sharp fangs, with hand holding Cudgel😬or Statues in Animal Shape, located in the front Gate and oppose each other

You may wonder What this statues are ? 🤔That statues are personification of Mystic Creatures called Nandiswara and Mahakala⚔️

Nandiswara is located in left side of the Gate and Mahakala in the right side. Both of them have duty as Dwarapala🚪. Dwara means Entrance and Pala means Guide/Security👮🏼

They ensure no negativity ⛔️could be entering Temple and Particular House. This scary face statue is a reminder👏🏼 there are invisible creatures watch every step we make and hoping we as human can behave ourselves every time we get in to The Temple or House 🌟

Want to know how those creatures could be assigned as Security ? 😁Will answer that on the next post. Come and wait 🔜
