Perched on a 97-meter-high reef at the southwestern tip of Bali, the magnificent Pura Luhur Uluwatu is a Pura Sad Kayangan, revered by Hindus as one of the nine pillars of the world. Initially used as a place of worship by the 11th-century priest Empu Kuturan, this pura is one of Bali's most significant spiritual landmarks.

Cracks in the rock base, caused by marine erosion, were first noticed in the 1970s. However, the situation has become increasingly concerning in recent times. Strong coastal currents and storm surges have threatened the integrity of this unique natural monument in recent years.

The Badung Regency authorities have decided to construct a special wave breaker-revetment along the foot of the cliff. This massive concrete and stone barrier will aim to soften the impact of the waves and prevent further erosion of the rock.

"We will focus on building the revetment as a wave-dissipating barrier, as well as a road for transporting materials," explained Rama Putra, head of the Water Resources Management Agency of the Public Works Department.

The project is estimated to cost around 82 billion rupiah (about $5.1 million USD) and will be financed from the regional budget. Design and construction work is scheduled to start in May 2024.

Along with the wave-breaking structures, a road is also planned along the beach to ensure that pilgrims can still access the temple.

"Although cracks are present, their condition is stable and not deteriorating. Nevertheless, we must take precautionary measures to protect this holy place," assured the head of the Pecatu community, Madhu Sumerta.

Buddhist and Hindu priests will perform special prayers, asking the spirits and deities to protect the famous Uluwatu cliff from further destruction.

The authentic life of the Mentawai tribe in the jungle is not what we are all used to!
The Mentawai tribe is one of the few indigenous tribes that have preserved their traditional way of life on the Indonesian islands. They live in small communities on the remote Mentawai Islands west of Sumatra.

The tribe practices animistic beliefs and a communal lifestyle. Their dwellings are large communal houses on stilts decorated with traditional carvings. The basis of the economy is agriculture, fishing, hunting and gathering.

Mentawai people are known for their intricate ritual tattoos on their face and body, which have important cultural significance. They also skillfully craft traditional boats, weapons and household items, decorating them with carvings.

The tribe tries to preserve its ancient traditions and way of life, despite the gradual influence of modern civilization and tourism. Their unique culture is of great interest to anthropologists and ethnographers. 🏹 🥥 🌴

Bali to Cap Airfares to Keep Tourism Affordable
For many tourists, Bali has always been an affordable and budget-friendly holiday destination. However, in recent years, rising costs of visas, tourist fees, accommodation, and entertainment have made one wonder if this paradise island remains a budget option for travelers.

In response to concerns that Bali might become too expensive for mass tourism, the Indonesian authorities are tackling one of the main problems - high airfares. Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi announced plans to review the upper limits on airfares after the Eid al-Fitr holiday in April 2024.

According to the minister, the current upper tariff limits are calculated based on factors such as aviation fuel costs, lease payments, and personnel costs. Decreasing these costs could lead to lower ticket price caps, while increasing them could prevent them from rising further. "We must approach this issue realistically," Sumadi noted.

The need to cap airfares is a concern not only for the authorities but also for the tourists themselves. For many travelers, the price of an airline ticket is a key factor when planning a trip, whether domestically or internationally. Exorbitant fares could make Bali inaccessible even for those who previously visited the island regularly.

Moreover, compared to the pre-pandemic period, tourists now have to bear additional costs. Previously, citizens of over 90 countries, including the main visitors to Bali, could obtain a free visa on arrival for 30 days. Now they require a visa costing 500,000 Indonesian rupiah (about $33 USD). Added to this is a mandatory tourist levy of 150,000 rupiah for the preservation of culture, the environment, and service improvement.

For a family of four, the additional costs amount to $165. This amount may not seem excessive for wealthy tourists, but for many budget-conscious travelers, it could be the deciding factor when choosing a holiday destination.

Therefore, the introduction of new upper price limits on airfares will be a major relief for Bali lovers. Affordable flights will keep the opportunity to enjoy all the delights of this paradise island without significant financial costs.

Official discussions on setting the maximum tariffs will take place immediately after the Eid al-Fitr holiday from April 9 to 15. On these dates, most institutions and companies in Indonesia are closed for the holidays. Foreign tourists with expiring visas are advised to extend them in advance before the start of the holidays.

Changes in the work of the Bali immigration services in connection with the celebration of Eid al-Fitr
The main Muslim holiday Eid al-Fitr, marking the end of the holy month of Ramadan, falls on April 9-15 this year. For Indonesia, where about 87% of the population is Muslim, this holiday is of great importance. In honor of Eid al-Fitr, long weekends are announced in the country, and hundreds of thousands of government agencies, offices and enterprises suspend their work.

Tourists planning to travel to Bali in the next two weeks should be prepared for disruptions in the work of the immigration services. It has already been announced that online visa application services will be temporarily suspended from April 8 to 15. According to a statement on the website molina.imigrasi.go.id, the processing of applications for all types of visas, except for visas on arrival and visa exemptions, is suspended.

Applications for visas submitted on April 6 and 7 will only be considered starting on April 16. This means that tourists who find themselves on Bali during the holiday weekend are advised to apply for a visa on arrival directly at the airport. However, due to the high workload, the processing times for even such visas may be longer than usual.

In addition to online services, immigration offices in Bali, including the office in Denpasar, will be completely closed from April 5 to 16. "In connection with the Eid al-Fitr holiday, the Denpasar Immigration Office will be closed from April 8 to 15 and will resume work on April 16," the official statement says.

Increased traffic congestion on Bali is also expected during the Eid al-Fitr celebrations. Every year during this period, tens of thousands of Indonesians travel to the island to celebrate Lebaran (as Eid al-Fitr is called in Indonesia) with relatives. The locals will be joined by numerous tourists, including from neighboring regions.

Due to the increased traffic, experts recommend carefully planning trips for this period, leaving early and being prepared for possible traffic jams. The presence of law enforcement officers on the roads of Bali will be increased to ensure safe movement.

Hotel occupancy in the southern resorts of Bali is expected to reach 80% or higher by mid-April. In order not to be left without accommodation at the height of the holidays, experts advise booking rooms in advance. This is especially important for those who have not yet decided on the dates of their stay on the island.

Thus, in the next two weeks, tourists in Bali will face some restrictions and specific conditions. However, with proper preparation, the Eid al-Fitr holiday should not interfere with a comfortable and safe stay on the "Island of the Gods".
