𝓔𝓷𝓰𝓵𝓲𝓼𝓱: Did you know? The iconic Kora-kora boats, once used to drive colonialists from the seacoast, are a symbol of Bandanese heritage and strength! With only 30-40 rowers of exceptional skill, these boats have traveled incredible distances, even as far as Scandinavia.

Every November, villages around Banda Naira come together for the Tanning Festival, a thrilling celebration of tradition, unity, and the sea. 🌊

At Luminocean Marine Education Indonesia, we celebrate the rich maritime culture while striving to conserve the beauty of our oceans. Let’s preserve this heritage together! 💙

𝓑𝓪𝓱𝓪𝓼𝓪 𝓘𝓷𝓭𝓸𝓷𝓮𝓼𝓲𝓪: Tahukah kamu? Kora-kora boats, perahu ikonik yang dulu digunakan untuk mengusir kolonialis dari pesisir, adalah simbol warisan dan kekuatan masyarakat Banda. Dengan hanya 30-40 pendayung yang luar biasa tangguh, perahu ini pernah menjelajah hingga sejauh Skandinavia!

We just signed up for this: a worldwide event to get in the water in January 5 and 6 days after full moon to record spawning of the coral Porites rus. Last year, we monitored already at the same time as our friends on Tahiti and can you imagine this: the same coral species spawned the exact same days after full moon, the exact same time after sunrise there and here at Banda ...... two places almost 8,900 km apart.

You can also sign up for the event if you have the chance to hop into the water at a coral reef mid January. Your contribution will help understand how globally synchronized these corals are!

𝓔𝓷𝓰𝓵𝓲𝓼𝓱: 🌊 Coral Spawning Expedition at Lava Flow Dive Site 🌊

📅 Date: Sunday, November 17, 2024
🕒 Time: 1:30 PM

Yesterday, the Luminocean team kicked off the Block Moonlight Experiment with a mission to monitor coral spawning using handmade Egg Traps!

🔧 Preparation:
We crafted 16 innovative egg traps using funnels attached to floating plastic bottles. These traps are designed to stay securely anchored yet float in the water column, enabling us to observe coral colonies during spawning.

🤿 Dive Action:
Helpers on the boat handed off egg traps to our divers, who worked in groups to carefully install each trap on selected table corals. Ropes were used to keep the traps in position despite ocean currents.

🌺 Goal:
Each morning, we’ll monitor these traps for signs of coral spawning, contributing to critical marine research and conservation efforts.

Stay tuned for updates from beneath the waves as we continue to support coral reef health and sustainability!

📅 Tanggal: Minggu, 17 November 2024
🕒 Waktu: 13:30

Kemarin, tim Luminocean memulai Eksperimen Block Moonlight untuk memantau pemijahan karang menggunakan Perangkap Telur Karang (Egg Trap) buatan tangan!

🔧 Persiapan:
Kami membuat 16 perangkap telur inovatif menggunakan corong yang dihubungkan dengan botol plastik mengapung. Perangkap ini dirancang agar tetap terpasang kokoh namun dapat mengapung di kolom air, sehingga memungkinkan kami memantau koloni karang selama pemijahan.

🤿 Aksi di Laut:
Para kru di kapal menyerahkan perangkap telur kepada penyelam, yang bekerja dalam tim untuk memasang trap dengan hati-hati pada koloni karang meja yang telah ditentukan. Tali digunakan untuk memastikan perangkap tetap berada di posisinya meskipun ada arus laut.

🌺 Tujuan:
Setiap pagi, perangkap ini akan diperiksa untuk melihat tanda-tanda pemijahan karang. Data yang kami kumpulkan menjadi bagian penting dalam mendukung pelestarian terumbu karang, memahami siklus pemijahan, dan melindungi ekosistem laut yang rapuh.
