https://linktr.ee/GreenhillSumatra

Green Hill Guest House is in the heart of Bukit Lawang village, overlooking the Bohorok river with amazing views of the rainforest, easy access to Gunung Leuser National Park (GLNP). We are an eco-conscious and conservation focussed guest house and tour operator and we are celebrating the biodiversity of Gunung Leuser National Park by bringing you amazing wildli

fe and stunning scenery from the depths of the sumatran jungle.........and our garden. Most guests visit here to search for orangutans....and there is so much more also to see here......come and join us for an adventure you will not forget. We offer some unique trekking experiences and pride ourselves on being strictly conservation focussed and having extremely high standards. In addition to the standard treks in Bukit Lawang since 2007 we have been offering trekking in the wild and untouched jungles of Bukit Kencur/Tualang Gepang as a means of taking some pressure off the busy Bukit Lawang trails and also offering alternative incomes to the guides from the local village. Mbra was born in Bukit Kencur and met his wife Andrea (a UK born conservation scientist) trekking in the jungles there so they have an intimate connection with the rainforest and the village people. We have a long running community project in the village which includes offering alternative income opportunities, teaching new skills/knowledge, nature club for kids, english lessons, tree planting, land purchased and donated for village hall and a graveyard....and much more to come. The guest rooms at Green Hill are nestled amongst the treetops on the hill behind the restaurant: 3 bungalows (200,000 -250,000 IDR) and a chalet/family room (300,000 IDR) all have private bathrooms with bamboo shower and balconies with jungle views. There is also a budget double with a shared bathroom (100,000) which has amazing jungle views also.

A family adventure💞😊👇
We often get asked are our jungle treks suitable for families and young children and is there enough for them to do....and the simple answer is yes😊
Our lovely guest Jhonathan and his family spent 2 days with us doing our exclusive and unique 2day Discovery Trek where they explored 2 different areas of national park rainforest. They also chose the adventurous option of camping overnight at one of our rustic camps next to a lovely jungle river. 🌳
🗣️Don't just take my word for it..here's a few words from
"hello Andrea, you Doni and all your staff was magnificent prepared and available in everything. congratulations to all of you. you are a great family. "
Save this post and when you're ready to plan an adventurous family holiday just drop us an email/DM/WhatsApp and let us help you design a programme thats exactly right for you. 🤗

What better place to run a free eye test clinic than our community library in Tualang Gepang! 👀👓

Very very grateful to our wonderful guests Aida and Vincent who brought over lots of spectacles and ran a free clinic the day before they did a 2day Discovery Trek 🤓✨ Thanks also to our lovely librarian who helped facilitate the whole day and made sure it all ran smoothly 🌟

It was a busy day and 80 people received eye tests and if necessary prescription glasses or sunglasses 😎

It's International Macaque week ✨🐒👇

❓DYK there are 23 species of macaques and most are found in Asia: Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, and the Philippines, India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, China, Japan, Afghanistan and parts of the Himalayas.

The Barbary macaque is the only African species, found in Morocco and Algeria and has a small introduced population in Gibraltar, making it the only wild monkey species in Europe

👀🐒Long tailed macaques are easy to see in and around Bukit Lawang. Take time to sit back and watch them…..from a safe distance! They live in large groups of many males and females so there is always a lot of social politics going on! Head to the river and you might also be lucky to watch them messing about (they are really good swimmers!).

It’s easy to feel that they are everywhere and really annoying and that is because they are really flexible and adaptable to living around us humans. 😒🙄💁

BUT

Not much is known about their population size and distribution and they face many threats as a consequence of their presence in human areas. You could say they are victims of their own success. 😔

Threats include▶️ habitat loss, illegal and legal domestic and international trade, human expansion, dependence on human foods, conflicts with humans, hunting and poaching (for the pet trade), use in traditional medicine, persecution as pests and tourism activities. They have suffered from intensive capture for biomedical research since the 1960s which is continuing to this day. It’s a very lucrative trade!

🔴In 2022 the IUCN upgraded their status to endangered but they remain unprotected by Indonesian law…..🤔

My TOP FIVE TIPS for being macaque aware:
🐵 Respect them by keeping your distance (at least 10 meters).
🐵 Never look them in the eye (it’s a sign of aggression).
🐵 Don’t ever ever feed them.
🐵 Don’t leave food and drink on your balcony or in clear view if they are close to the restaurant where you are eating /drinking.
🐵 Don’t carry fruit/snacks etc in clear view of them…put it in your bag.

🐵💓Join us in celebrating all things macaque during…show them some love by liking and sharing this post

Conservation award winner! ✨👇

Massive congratulations from all of us at Green Hill and our community library to the inspirational Ibu Ayu and on receiving a Whitley Conservation Award in London last night! The award was presented by none other than Princess Anne who was wearing an ecoprint scarf from ✨🥳

Known as the "Green Oscars," these prestigious international awards recognize outstanding grassroots conservationists from biodiversity-rich, resource-poor countries who implement local solutions to global challenges. Through a rigorous selection process, the awards identify passionate local leaders making significant conservation impacts in their home countries. 💚🇮🇩

We first got to know Ayu thru Instagram and made connections regarding community conservation and education. Ayu has always been an absolute pleasure to work with and ready to share ides and resources about conservation. We were super excited to finally meet her last year when she visited us and donated an amazing gift - a Sumatra-themed version of the classic game Snakes and Ladders. 🎲🐍🐒 This unique edition was a collaboration between and and “greenhillsumatra , which highlights the rich biodiversity of the Sumatran rainforest making learning both fun and informative.

Congratulations Ibu Ayu and Kiara! ✨🥳

Walking with Dinosaurs! 👣🦕👇

Whenever we hear anything about Sumatran wildlife it is most often relating to the ‘big four’ – orangutan, tiger, rhino & elephant. But there are incredible amounts of biodiversity and many species are under researched with hardly anything known about them as funding tends to go to projects on the big 4 species. 🐯🦧🐘🦏

Here at Green Hill we are pioneers of conservation focussed community tourism and we believe that not only NGOs can contribute to conservation and education. Properly run sustainable tourism can play an important role and it is our life’s mission to promote awareness of the incredible biodiversity that lives in Sumatra! 🦊🦝🐻🐁🐢🐀🐿️🦇🦤🦗🕷️🪲

Today we bring you 6 facts about the absolutely incredible Asian Forest Tortoise (Manouria emys) which has been spotted during our longer Discovery Treks:

🐢largest tortoise in mainland Asia, with adults typically weighing 25-35 kg (55-77 lbs) and reaching lengths of up to 60 cm (24 inches).
-🐢found in Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, and Thailand.
🐢one of the most primitive living tortoise species, having diverged from other tortoises early in evolutionary history, earning them the nickname "living fossils."
🐢remarkable diet flexibility, consuming plants, fruits, fungi, invertebrates, and even carrion occasionally.
🐢unique among tortoise species because they build nests! Females construct large mounds of forest debris using their front legs, which can be up to 1 meter wide and 50 cm high.

BUT

🟥they are Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List due to habitat loss and hunting for food, traditional medicine, and the pet trade.

❓So what can you do to help them?
👉join us at Green Hill on one of our Discovery Treks in remote areas of rainforest. Your benign presence simply trekking in the jungle acts as a deterrent to any illegal activities such has hunting and habitat destruction..and thus helps protect these amazing animals and their forest habitat.

Say No to cat-POO-chino 🚫🍒🦨💩☕

Our celebration of Civet cats continues where today we pledge that Green Hill is a civet coffee free zone. We will never sell or support civet coffee production.

We support keeping civets in the forest and not locking them up to collect their poo for coffee🤢

Thank you to Toni, Sada and Mira for showing Green Hills commitment to conservation and setting up our education display. Saying 'cat-poo-chino' is really tricky isn't it😂 (see slide 2).

☕📽️We invite everyone to visit us in Green Hill for a free coffee and learn more by reading our info and watching the youtube doco "civet coffee: from rare to reckless". You can also checkout

Civet celebration continues! 👇🦨

Today at Nature Club in our community library we learnt all about civets and why they are important for the rainforest. 🦨🍒💩🌱🌳

➡️ There are 36 species worldwide and 6 in Sumatra!
➡️ They live in the forest and sometimes in gardens and fields.
➡️ They eat insects, small animals, eggs and lots of fruits.
➡️ They p**p out fruit seeds and help forest regeneration.

BUT
🪤☕🍒 Many are captured, caged and fed only ripe coffee cherries?!??
➡️....so people can collect their p**p and make expensive coffee from the coffee seeds.!!💩🍒☕💰

👀 We looked at lots of pictures of civets in their natural habitat and then in the cages and we decided that:
"Musang di hutan, bukan dikurung untuk kopi!" 🦨🌳
"Civets in the forest! Not locked up for coffee" 🦨🌳

And then we had fun colouring in picture of a southern palm civet and making civet masks 🦨🎭

When you stay and trek with us you enable us to continue with such conservation education and outreach work. You can even join us for a night walk to experience the civets nocturnal world and maybe even spot one. 🌜👣🔎✨

Civets: Nature's Enigmatic Ecosystem Engineers

🐱🦨These small to medium-sized cat like mammals navigate the shadows of forests across Africa and Asia and there are 36 species worldwide. Due to them being nocturnal they are rarely seen and not much is known about them.

🇮🇩There are 6 species in Sumatra and we have seen the first 3 species either on treks, in our garden and recently at our Kuta Langis Ecolodge:
➡️ Binturong, Southern palm civet, Small toothed palm civet, Masked Palm Civet, Banded Palm Civet, Otter Civet.

🌜🍍As primarily nocturnal omnivores, civets consume fruits, small vertebrates, and insects—making them crucial seed dispersers for numerous plant species. I know from my own garden that the Southern Palm Civet really loves pineapple and mangoes and if we don’t harvest the ripe ones the civets get in there quick! They also occasionally climb from the mango tree onto my roof and make quite a noise….scaring the bejaysus out of me and making me think it was an enormous cat due to the thick long black tail dangling thru the window!!!😱😂

💩🌱Ecologically, Civets serve as vital links in their ecosystems. Their fruit consumption and subsequent seed dispersal help maintain forest diversity, often carrying seeds to areas otherwise unreachable. Additionally, civets control pest populations by preying on rodents and insects that might otherwise damage crops.

🌜👣Join us at Green Hill or Kuta Langis on a night walk to explore their world and maybe if you are lucky you might catch a glimpse of these secretive animals. We hope you enjoy this camera trap footage from our Kuta Langis Ecolodge of a super cautious male Southern Palm Civet – you can see near the end of the second video he does a little bit of scent marking as he drags his back end on the ground!! 👀

Why civet coffee is bad! 👇😯

This week we are celebrating all things civets for World Civet Day on the 4th of April! This year's theme is civet coffee. To kick start this week of civet celebration, we’ve got some key civet facts:

🦨Civets are a group of small nocturnal mammals in the same family as wild cats (lions, tigers etc).

💩Civet coffee is coffee produced through the digestive tract of civets and it’s known as the most ‘rare’ coffee in the world. Yep- that’s coffee that comes from civet p**p! It literally is sh*t in so many ways!
- also known as weasel coffee/ Luwak coffee / kopi luwak….

🪤 In reality, civets are captured in their thousands to be caged and force fed coffee in industrial-style farms. Civet coffee is causing significant threats to civet survival.

🔴Several species are exploited to produce civet coffee including the Binturong which is under a high risk of extinction in the wild (IUCN red list: Vulnerable).

This is why we have partnered with and are asking you this World Civet Day to:

🗣️......Say no to cat-poo-chino! 🦨💩☕

➡️Don’t buy civet coffee, buy local teas and regular coffee instead.
➡️share our posts and tell all your friends to join us in saying no to cat-poo-chino

Stay tuned for more civet facts throughout the week!
- what are civets - where do they live - what do they do?
- Mythbusters about civet coffee!
- how YOU and tourism can help conservation of civets.

🦨💩☕ Drop a suitable emoji in the comments to tell us you care about Civets and say no to cat-poo-chino 🦨💩☕

"What will I see on a jungle trek?"

Here's a few examples of the a-MAZE-ing wildlife you can see in and around 🌳{no guarantees tho😁}

💡Did you know you don't even need to go trekking to spot wildlife? Of course going trekking is a cool experience but if its not for you then walking along the jungle borders, in the villages and around our Kuta Langis Ecolodge is also a great way to spot wildlife.👀

TOP TIPS on how to be a responsible traveller:

📏🐒Stay safe and respect all wildlife by not feeding it and keeping a minimum distance of 10 meters.

🦧Look for a tour provider who showcases biodiversity and doesn't just advertise 'orangutan treks'.

💚💚Like this post and share it if you LOVE wildlife as much as we do.😁💞

🌳🤩Amazing trees!! 🤩🌳👇

One of the very few things we guarantee that you will see on your trek with us is trees! 💯

Sumatra's rainforests are exceptionally diverse not only in wildlife but in trees! They contain approximately 4,000-5,000 different tree species making them one of the most botanically rich and diverse forest ecosystems on Earth! A single hectare (2.47 acres) can contain 180-200 different tree species. For comparison, temperate forests in North America or Europe typically have only 10-15 tree species per hectare. 💥😱🌳

Trees from the Dipterocarpaceae family are true giants—reaching staggering heights of 80+ meters with massive buttress roots anchoring them to the forest floor. These rainforest trees form the backbone of Sumatra's diverse tropical forest ecosystems, creating habitats for countless plant and animal species and these emergent super tall trees create entire ecosystems in their canopies.🌱🌳🐯🦊🦎🐍🐒🦧🐿️🦔🦦🐦🦅🦉🕷️🦂🐌🐜

If you want to do some forest bathing and see some of these amazing giants in a pristine untouched rainforest join us on one of our unique Discovery Treks. DM or comment for further information.
📷Thanks to our guests emily, jurrien and sietske and guide emano for these amazing photos.

What IS our unique DISCOVERY TREK❓👇🌳

At Green Hill we do trekking differently. We are genuine pioneers of conservation focused ethical jungle trekking. We want you to have an authentic experience and take you to see the real Sumatran jungle💚🍃

On our “Discovery Trek” for 2 days (or longer) you get to experience two different areas of national park rainforest. On day 1 you start your trek in the remote and virtually untouched area of rainforest near Tualang Gepang and camp overnight at an amazingly beautiful site by a jungle river or at our Ecolodge if you want a ‘luxury’ sleeping option.🌳🍃
On your final morning you will have an early breakfast, a swift walk out of the jungle and a motorbike/jeep transfer to Bukit Lawang where you will continue your trek and with an super refreshing raft ride down the river into Bukit Lawang.🌳🍃

Thank you to our wonderful guests for the photos and this is what they thought of their 3day Discovery Trek:
“We had an amazing time at Greenhill and on the treks - an unforgettable experience. We loved the way the discovery trek was planned with the 2 days in the pristine jungle and then the 1 day in Lawang. We preferred the first 2days, what an incredible experience to be in the jungle alone. We saw an owl, a turtle, the lantern bugs are incredible, gorgeous butterflies, the Sumatran dragon, we also heard gibbons and loved seeing the trails the wildlife had left. We appreciated seeing the orangutans and the hornbills in Bukit Lawang even though it’s busy with tourists and slightly less pleasant, it’s incredible to see the monkeys. The rafting was very fun too! The guides and cooks were fab..amazing food. We loved both nights in the jungle - the ecolodge is wonderful!.We also got to learn about all the amazing things you do- buying the land to protect it, the community library.. we felt very inspired. Everything was very easy and so well prepared and convenient for us - we really didn’t have to worry about a thing. Thank you again”

💚💚 Like this post if you are ready for adventure and dm/comment with any questions. We are here to help you plan the perfect jungle experience.
