Green Hill Guest House is in the heart of Bukit Lawang village, overlooking the Bohorok river with amazing views of the rainforest, easy access to Gunung Leuser National Park (GLNP). We are an eco-conscious and conservation focussed guest house and tour operator and we are celebrating the biodiversity of Gunung Leuser National Park by bringing you amazing wildli

fe and stunning scenery from the depths of the sumatran jungle.........and our garden. Most guests visit here to search for orangutans....and there is so much more also to see here......come and join us for an adventure you will not forget. We offer some unique trekking experiences and pride ourselves on being strictly conservation focussed and having extremely high standards. In addition to the standard treks in Bukit Lawang since 2007 we have been offering trekking in the wild and untouched jungles of Bukit Kencur/Tualang Gepang as a means of taking some pressure off the busy Bukit Lawang trails and also offering alternative incomes to the guides from the local village. Mbra was born in Bukit Kencur and met his wife Andrea (a UK born conservation scientist) trekking in the jungles there so they have an intimate connection with the rainforest and the village people. We have a long running community project in the village which includes offering alternative income opportunities, teaching new skills/knowledge, nature club for kids, english lessons, tree planting, land purchased and donated for village hall and a graveyard....and much more to come. The guest rooms at Green Hill are nestled amongst the treetops on the hill behind the restaurant: 3 bungalows (200,000 -250,000 IDR) and a chalet/family room (300,000 IDR) all have private bathrooms with bamboo shower and balconies with jungle views. There is also a budget double with a shared bathroom (100,000) which has amazing jungle views also.

A family adventure💞😊👇

We often get asked are our jungle treks suitable for families and young children and is there enough for them to do....and the simple answer is yes😊

Our lovely guest Melinda and her family spent 4 days with us starting with a night at Green Hill followed by a 2day Discovery Trek where they explored 2 different areas of national park rainforest. Instead of jungle camping they chose the luxury option and stayed overnight in a Jungle Villa at our wonderful Kuta Langis Ecolodge where they had comfortable beds, a private bathroom and a large terrace with amazing views of the rainforest.

🗣️Don't just take my word for it..here's a few words from Melinda:

"We loved the lodge it was in such a beautiful location and the grounds so nice. The first trek was so wild and raw. Second trek many people! But both unique and we loved both! The boys had a ball! My youngest Ari was so fast he didn’t want to stop! It was my eldest boy Isaacs 13th birthday on the first trek so it was an awesome experience for him! Thank you so much. "

Save this post and when you're ready to plan an adventurous family holiday just drop us an email/DM/WhatsApp and let us help you design a programme thats exactly right for you. 🤗

Why trek in remote areas of jungle?

🍃Here at Green Hill we specialize in taking our guests trekking in slightly remote areas of national park rainforest that are not often visited by tourists. One of the major benefits of this pioneering approach is that the rainforest and wildlife are protected as guests act as a benign deterrent to any would be hunters. Remote areas offer an immersive and authentic experience where you can explore the real wild Sumatra with our guides from the local community. 🥾🥾🌳🌳

👀 Of course in wild areas the wildlife is truly wild and can be quite tricky to spot but if you embrace all creatures great and small you will for sure be blown away by the incredible biodiversity and you may even get the chance to see some rare wildlife.

👥💚We know our friends at share our values and have a similar approach to sustainable tourism so we were stoked when a Daniel spent 5 days with us both in our two different national park rainforest locations and shared with us some of his photos.

📷The first photo is an incredibly rare sighting of the little known Sumatran Serow, Capricornis sumatrensis sumatrensis! It is listed as vulnerable on the IUCN red list due to hunting and habitat loss. The 2nd+3rd photos are a mother and baby Spiny hill turtle listed as Endangered in the IUCN Red List.

💚💚Join us at Green Hill and Simolap for authentic jungle adventures and become an ally in safeguarding this amazing wildlife and its environment.

This is a 'Fabulous long horned beetle' (Thysia walichii) and isn't that the best name ever? 😁💥

Join us at Green Hill for one of our truly unique "Discovery Treks" where our guides take you off the beaten track to remote Sumatran rainforest and help you search for amazing wildlife.

What IS our best selling DISCOVERY TREK❓👇🌳

At Green Hill we do trekking differently. We are genuine pioneers of conservation focused ethical jungle trekking. We really want you to have an authentic and sustainable jungle trekking experience and share amazing rainforest environments with you. We take you to see the real Sumatran jungle💚🍃

On our “Discovery Trek” for 2 days (or longer) you get to experience two different areas of national park rainforest. On day 1 you start your trek in the remote and virtually untouched area of rainforest near the villages of Tualang Gepang/Bukit Kencur. The wildlife here is totally wild but it IS there….it just hides from humans! You will camp overnight at an amazingly beautiful site by a jungle river or at our Ecolodge if you want a ‘luxury’ sleeping option.🌳🍃

If you choose a 3,4 or 5 day Discovery trek you can trek each day and move campsites OR if you fancy taking it easier you can stay in one campsite for 2 nights and just chill out at the jungle camp with maybe a little explore.

On your final morning you will have an early breakfast, a swift walk out of the jungle and a motorbike/jeep transfer to Bukit Lawang where you will continue your trek. The wildlife here is extremely habituated to human visitors so you do have higher chances of sightings….but we never make any guarantees of what you will see. You will finish your trek with an super refreshing raft ride down the river into Bukit Lawang.🌳🍃

🗣️ The photos here are from Julia and Carl who did a 3 day Discovery Trek last month: “We didn’t see anyone else for the first two days, which was so nice. The trek was really through a dense jungle, no clear path. In Bukit Lawang it was cool to see the orangutans, however felt a little bit like a zoo because all the people! So busy. Made us really appreciate the first days more. But all in all it was a great combination, as seeing the orangutans was also unforgettable! We had a great trip, the staff was super friendly and very well organized. Food was amazing! “

💚💚 Like this post if you are ready for adventure and dm/comment with any questions. We are here to help you plan the perfect jungle experience.

Monkeys are amazing! 👇👇

It's "International Macaque Week"💥🍾 and to celebrate we are going to share with you some camera trap footage to show what monkeys get up to when humans aren't annoying them🤪🐵

This video was taken in the borders of our Kuta Langis Ecolodge. We have left the borders reeeeally wild so they can act as corridors for the wildlife and it's brilliant to see them being used...in this case by an A-MAZE-ing adult male Pig Tail Macaque. There's no doubt that he is the boss and if we see him we should keep well away right?

Like this post if you think he is incredible and you would defo keep your distance!

Orangutans😊💚

If you get lucky you might see wild orangutans when you trek with us in the remote area on our truly unique "Discovery Treks". 🌳🍃

It truly is an experience unlike any other....to be trekking in the hot and sweaty rainforest, feeling a bit tired, your backpack feeling heavy, wondering if it's time to go to camp....when suddenly....your guide stops....you all stop behind him.....he holds his hand up...you hold your breath....and he points to a movement...high in the forest canopy....you can't quite see anything...so your guide takes you two steps forward.....then......all of a sudden you see an orangutan....just hanging from a branch...slowly eating some young leaves.

After gazing at it for a few minutes your guide slowly beckons you to follow him....so you all very carefully move forward....and trek onwards to your jungle camp......but now your steps are a little lighter.....💚🍃

Join us at Green Hill for the experience of a lifetime....your own 'Attenborough moment'....like .foto who took these amazing photos 💚

Are you macaque aware? 🤔🐒

DYK there are 9 different subspecies of long tailed macaques distributed across Southeast Asia?

👀🐒They are easy to see in and around Bukit Lawang and I always take time to sit back and watch them…..from a safe distance…and as they live in large groups of many males and females there is always a lot of social politics going on! Head to the camping ground and you might also be lucky to watch them messing about in the river (they are really good swimmers!).🐒🏊

It’s easy to feel that they are everywhere and really annoying and that is because they are really flexible and adaptable to living around us humans. 😒🙄💁

BUT

Actually not much is known about their population size and distribution and they face numerous threats, many as a consequence of their presence in human areas. You could say they are victims of their own success. 😔🥺

Threats include▶️ habitat loss, agriculture, illegal and legal domestic and international trade, human expansion and urbanization, dependence on human foods and conflicts with humans, hunting and poaching (for the pet trade), use in traditional medicine, persecution as pests and tourism activities. They have suffered from intensive capture for biomedical research since the 1960s which is continuing to this day. It’s a very lucrative trade!

🔴In 2022 the IUCN upgraded their status to endangered but they remain unprotected by Indonesian law…..🤔

My TOP FIVE TIPS for being macaque aware:
🐵 Respect them by keeping your distance (at least 10 meters).
🐵 Never look them in the eye (it’s a sign of aggression).
🐵 Don’t ever ever feed them.
🐵 Don’t leave food and drink on your balcony or in clear view if they are close to the restaurant where you are eating /drinking.
🐵 Don’t carry fruit/snacks etc in clear view of them…put it in your bag.

BONUS TIP
Don’t throw your crocs or flip flops at them (you might loose them in the undergrowth)🤭

🐵💓On International Macaque Day…show them some love by liking this post and sharing it with fellow travellers.

....and relax🍃💞

We actively encourage our guests to find time to do nothing! Just sit and chill out. Be present.

The view is incredible....so green.....double amazing as this land used to be a palm oil plantation! We chopped it down, regenerated and rewilded the land. And the wildlife has returned....big time💚💓

If you want to come and do nothing...maybe chat with us over a coffee and find out about the wildlife....then please drop us a dm/email/WhatsApp and fire away with any questions at all. 🍃😊

Happy Indonesian Primate Day 💥👇

Selamat Hari Primata Indonesia 🇮🇩

DYK Indonesia is no. 3 in the world for number of primate species (61) after Brazil (116) and Madagascar (98) ❓

In and around Bukit Lawang and the Langkat region of North Sumatra there are an amazing 9 species of primate....but....ALL are threatened with extinction! Even the long tailed macaques which are seemingly everywhere are at risk.

HOW CAN YOU HELP THEM?
- it's easy😁

👉respect all the primates you might see on your trek, at your hotel or just walking around by not feeding them and keeping a minimum distance of 10 meters.

{this applies everywhere....not just in Bukit Lawang💁}

Thank you for reading 😊 Show ur support for safe primate tourism by liking 💚 and sharing this post. If you want to know the species in the photos head over to our stories.........

Barn Owl in Sumatra!😯👇

📷This is a Barn Owl (Tytus alba) which I was very very surprised to see one morning when I opened my balcony doors! It flew off and spent all day asleep in the coconut tree. The resident birds were NOT happy at all and were mobbing it all day – from a safe distance - and making a lot of noise until at 6:30pm it silently flew off!

🔊 swipe thru to last slide for the video!

👻The Indonesian for Owl is burung hantu which means ghost bird.

🦉📝OWL FACTS

➡️There are 247 species of owl worlwide (18 species of barn owl).
➡️Most owls are nocturnal (only 2 species are not) and occupy almost all terrestrial habitats from arctic tundra to tropical rainforest.
➡️They are exclusively carnivorous with many adaptions that help them to be incredible hunters of their prey:
- Wing feathers with fringed edges to make flight silent
- Forward pointing eyes on flat facial disk = enabling binocular vision and increase incoming light and sound
- Asymmetrical ear openings
- Rod shaped eye balls are in fixed position (cant move) BUT they can swivel their head 270 degrees.
- have very strong feet and legs.

🍃CONSERVATION
28% of owl species are at risk. Those most at risk are species with limited ranges and island endemics. Habitat destruction is their biggest threat.

🦉BARN OWLS
Occupy wide variety of habitats world wide from desert to tropical rainforest but not cold/harsh environments. All have heart shaped facial disk to collect sound waves, are strongly nocturnal and hunt primarily by ear.

🦉🦉BONUS FACT: Owls are monogamous and both the male and female look after the babies (biparental care).

DYK you can see Kingfishers in Sumatra?!

🌏Worldwide there are 117 species of Kingfisher with 50 species in Indonesia and 15species in Sumatra.

🍴KF are carnivorous! We might think that they all live around streams and rivers and just eat fish BUT…there are some that are more land/forest based, don’t eat fish at all and eat things like lizards, frogs & dragonflies.

💞⛏️🥴most KF are monogamous with both parents caring for the chicks. All KF are cavity nesters meaning they make a burrow in a tree hole, rotten wood, termite nest. Some excavate burrows in muddy banks and start the process by diving beak first into the mudwall to dislodge the first bodys length of earth!!

🚅🇯🇵The design of the nose of the Japanese bullet train is based on a KFs beak!

👀🔎where to see KF in and around Bukit Lawang area?
If you patiently hang around any quiet jungle river you may see the Ruffous backed dwarf KF (only just bigger than a medium sized hummingbird) or the Ruddy KF. If you spend some time in the rice paddies near fish pools (ie…my garden) you may see the blue eared KF or the Common KF and will most definitely hear the raucous scream of the White throated KF. If you are very lucky you might even see a collared KF.

💚💚 Double tap if you would like to join me for a chilled out river walk to search for kingfishers or come over to my house for a cup of tea and listen for them? It’s a lovely way to explore the wonders of Sumatra.

Aren't birds amazing?! 😱

These are Blue throated bee-eaters (Merops viridis) who mostly eat bees, wasps and dragonflies....or as you can see here....moths! If you look closely you can see the dust from the moth wing being scattered to the wind! 🐝🦋

DYK - Indonesia is 4th in the world for number of bird species = 1711 💥👇

{Fyi...1st Columbia, 2nd Peru, 3rd Brazil}

🇮🇩 Within Indonesia, Sumatra is 2nd (only to Papua) with 582 different species!

💚💚Double tap if you agree these bee-eaters are stunning!

🚨New publication alert & why your photos are important👇

iNaturalist is like a social media platform based on nature photos. It’s a place to record and organize your nature findings, meet other nature enthusiasts and learn about the natural world. It’s is an amazing online community that helps you identify your observations, discuss them and actually create research-quality citizen science data 🍃

📷One day I was uploading a batch of my photos and one of them turns out to be a moth (that looks like a bee) and the first ever recording of this species on iNaturalist! Of course being the geeky scientist that I am I investigated further and found that
➡️ it was first described in 2003 using a museum specimen collected in Sumatra in 1887
➡️this species was previously thought ‘lost’ and was ‘rediscovered’ in Malaysia in 2017
➡️there is very little info on this species and its conservation status is unknown

😄It seemed pretty significant to have ‘rediscovered’ a species that had not been seen in Sumatra for 130 years so of course I thought why not write a scientific paper. I am stoked to say that my paper was published in April 2023

Abstract:
Traditional methods of species identification involve the collection and killing of specimens. The associated costs and expertise required are prohibitory. In this paper we describe the first documented record of Heterosphecia tawonoides in its natural habitat in Sumatra since 1887, reporting its identification using photographs uploaded to the citizen science platform iNaturalist. Our findings add valuable information to the small body of work on this species and demonstrate the importance of having freely available high-quality tools such as iNaturalist without which this important record would not have been reported and the observation of this rarely seen moth species in Sumatra would have remained unknown 🐝🦋

The moral of this story is set up an iNatualist account and wherever you are in the world take photos of anything you see and upload them to iNaturalist. By doing this you can learn about what you see, contribute to biodiversity monitoring and Who knows…you might discover a new species!🐝🦋

Luxury jungle trek?!?😁👇

Maybe you would love to do a multi-day jungle trek and search for incredible wildlife....BUT.....are not too keen about sleeping in a basic jungle campsite?🏕️😳

If this is you...then look no further! You can join the LUXURY version our unique Discovery Trek which covers two areas of national park rainforest...AND...you sleep in the comfort of our gorgeous Kuta Langis Ecolodge. 🍃💚

🗣️ Here's some photos from our lovely guests and what they thought of their 2day luxury Discovery Trek last week:

"The 2 day Discovery Trek (Luxury Option) was well worth the money.

On the first day, we went with our fantastic guide, Doni, into the National Park via the Eco Lodge. The jungle was practically untouched and we didn’t see a soul. We stopped at the most mesmerising secret waterfall for a dip and a delicious scenic lunch. In the afternoon, we continued through the jungle stopping at points on the way at whatever piqued our interest.

We spent the night at the Kuta Langis Eco Lodge which had the most FANTASTIC view over the Sumatran jungle, and had another delicious dinner and played cards with Doni.

We woke up to the sounds of the jungle with great Sumatran coffee and tea before heading to Bukit Lawang where we saw orangutans. Doni was very conscious when compared to other tour guides and groups about keeping our distance and being respectful of wildlife. We finished with a really fun rafting/tubing down the river back to town to round off the most amazing experience." 💚

We don't sell bottled water or any drinks in plastic.

Here is my collection of water bottles and reusable cups. I never go anywhere without one or two of them. The green cup one is a collapsible one (doesn't take up much room) that i got in but you can buy similar online...try Amazon. My water bottles are from 💦🍃♻️

Will I see snakes? 🐍👀👇

We sometimes get asked if guests might see snakes and the short answer is 'probably not'.
➡️ snakes don't want to meet humans and will keep out of our way. One benefit of stomping around and thru the jungle is that our heavy footsteps will create vibrations in the ground that snakes can feel and snakes they will 'run' away long before we see them.🥾🥾🐍🏃‍♂️

They are amazing animals tho...and I hope these photos of a Waglers Pit Viper show you how beautiful they can be. { taken from a v safe distance with a nice zoom lens }💚

Top snakey facts 🐍

- there are approx 11,000 species of reptile wordwide.
- approx 3000 species of snake.
- live everywhere except Antartica, Iceland, Ireland, Greenland & New Zeland.
- Indonesia is no3 in the world with 376 species.🏆
- Slytherin is the best house at Hogwarts 🧙‍♂️
