A big thank you to our great team at Batu Kapal Conservation Sanctuary and Volunteering !

Today we did our bit for by cleaning up our Landak River from waste and aim to keep our environment clean for nature and our health.

A day for us to recognize the most iconic victim of the palm oil industry and to help encourage the public to take action to protect this amazing species in the wild!

COVID-19 and Orangutans

You may have already heard the devasting news that COVID-19 has reached our nearest town Bukit Lawang and surrounding areas, with the village recording its first COVID cases and deaths in the past month. COVID doesn’t just affect humans, it also affects animals, including our closest living relatives, orangutans.

Scientific evidence shows that orangutans, who share 97% of human DNA, are highly susceptible to diseases transmitted by humans. If the virus were to infect even one wild orangutan, experts fear it could spread unchecked and wipe out an entire population. There would be no way to stop it in the wild.

The combined impacts of habitat loss, habitat degradation, illegal hunting, and illegal pet trade, have pushed the orangutan toward an extremely high risk of extinction in the wild and now they face a new possible threat of a disease that can potentially add to that risk.

If this happens, it will be catastrophic.

Scientists believe protecting nature is the best way to contain this virus and our first, best and most cost-effective line of defense against future pandemics. Some of the deadliest new diseases, including COVID-19, Ebola, SARS and HIV, have all arisen when people have crossed the natural barriers between human and animal populations!

Its not too late! By saving orangutans, we also save our environment and ourselves. If we can protect and save our evolutionary cousins and their rainforest homes, it would mean we are making the necessary changes to protect all life on earth!
