17 August 2016 marks Indonesia's 71st year of independence.

Friday, 17 August 1945 was the most historical day for all Indonesian people, when Ir. Soekarno proclaimed the Independence of Indonesia. After being under Dutch colonialism for more than three and half centuries and Japanese colonialism for three and half years, the people of Indonesia finally achieved their aspiration to become an independence nation.

The day is celebrated on August 17, when red-and-white flags adorn the street sides and flag raising ceremonies take place at government offices.

After the flag ceremonies, the more informal celebrations start. The Indonesians do all kinds of competitions, like kerupuk (chips) eating, climbing palm trees greased with oil, sack races, getting nailed tied to a string into a bottle and many other party games.

But it is not just about having fun, in addition to being entertaining all the games also have symbolic value and serve as reminder of the time before Indonesia had its independence. For example, eating kerupuk is supposed to remind the Indonesians of how people lived in poverty during the colonization and climbing the palm tree symbolizes the effort it took to gain independence. The competitors are people of all ages, genders, and professions. The young and old, men and women, students and workers, the rich and commoners are all participating.

Taman Ujung Water Palace - Magnificent Water Palace in Bali's East

Taman Ujung ‘water palace’, with its complete and official designation of Taman Sukasada Ujung, is located in the village of Seraya in Karangasem regency. It is the sister site of Tirta Gangga, also built by the late raja of Karangasem. The complex consists of various large pools and historic structures set against a backdrop of Mount Agung and the eastern shoreline.

The site suffered near devastation by showers of hot ash following the eruption of nearby Mount Agung in 1963, and also weathered an earthquake in 1979. Restoration efforts throughout the decades made way to its current splendor, and it continues to appeal to both locals and visitors.

Gambuh is Bali’s oldest dance drama that developed in the 15th century in the Klungkung kingdom of Gelgel. The stories feature blue bloods and their servants, and Gambuh was obviously used as a tool by the palaces to demonstrate their power and importance. The dramas included a large cast of dancers – around 22 – who were originally all-male, playing both male and female roles.

The ancient drama is based almost entirely on the tales of Prince Panji, which were modified from the palm leaf scripture called Malat. The central theme of the Panji stories is ‘love’ – his attachment for his wife, her disappearance and his subsequent journeys hunting for his soul mate.

Gambuh dancers articulate in an ancient Balinese language called Kawi, which is characteristically shrill and nasally, yet at times guttural and gruff – depending on the character. Modern audiences do not understand Kawi; however, there are times in the drama when utterances by important characters are translated by their servants.

Active Gambuh troupes in Bali are found in Batuan and Kedisan Gianyar; Pedungan, Denpasar; Jungsri, Padang Aji and Budakeling, Karangasem; Tumbak Bayuh, Badung; Apik Yeh, Tabanan; and Naga Sepeha and Anturan Buleleng.

Uluwatu Temple, or Pura Luhur Uluwatu, one of six key temples believed to be Bali’s spiritual pillars, is renowned for its magnificent location, perched on top of a steep cliff approximately 70 meters above sea level.

Pura Luhur Uluwatu is definitely one of the top places on the island to go to for sunset delights, with direct views overlooking the beautiful Indian Ocean and daily Kecak dance performances. Balinese architecture, traditionally-designed gateways, and ancient sculptures add to Uluwatu Temple’s appeal.

The Balinese Hindus believe that the three divine powers of Brahma, Vishnu, and Siva become one here. That belief results in making Uluwatu Temple a place of worship of Siva Rudra, the Balinese Hindu deity of all elements and aspects of life in the universe. Pura Uluwatu is also dedicated to protect Bali from evil sea spirits.
