The lionfish is commonly seen during most dives and can make for a pretty photo but unfortunately, it is an invasive species to the Atlantic. They were introduced to the environment unnaturally and therefore, have no known predators. Did you know that they can reproduce 2 million eggs per year all season round?

In some places like the Carribbean and Japan, they have mastered the art of preparing lionfish as an edible seafood (just like the pufferfish) to sustainably control lionfish populations in their waters!

Clownfish are affectionately known as Nemo around the world, thanks to the award winning animation film Finding Nemo by Pixar! Here are some fun facts you might not know about Clownfishes:
1. There are about 30 known species with distinct looks and can grow up to 6 inches in length - most of them do not look like Nemo.
2. Clownfish and Anemone have a symbiotic relationship where both organisms benefit each other - the Anemone provides the Clownfish with protection and shelter, while the Clownfish provides the Anemone nutrients and by scaring off potential predator fish.
3. Clownfishes are born male where they prepare nest for the female and guard the eggs.
4. Clownfishes are protandrous hermaphrodites which means they are born as males, but will turn into a female to reproduce.
5. Some clownfishes have a parasitic species of isopod that replaces it's tongue and it feeds when the clownfish eats.
Different species of Clownfish can be found in Bali. Be sure to tell us what you are looking for in a dive, we will strive to point it out to you!

Most pipefish are monogamous like the Robust Ghost Pipefish you see in this video! They mate for life and they are often seen floating together in pairs. The female is the larger of the two and has pronounced pelvic fins on her underside, which are fused to form a pouch for incubating eggs. Can you spot which is the female? Dive Lah wishes everyone a blessed Valentine's Day! ❤️💚

Nursing Shark aka "couch potatoes of the sea" are a frequent favourite because of their docile temperament! 🥔💉💊
Did you know that they:
🦈 Travel reeeeally slowly on the ocean floor (~2.4km/hr).
🦈 Females give birth to 21-29 youngins at a time.
🦈 Can transform their skin from light to dark depending on their exposure to sunlight.
🦈 Practise suction feeding: if they suck on food that is too big, they will spit out and suck it up again until it is torn apart.

Shaun the Sheep Nudibranch (Costasiella Kuroshimae)
Scroll right to see why this Nudibranch has that nickname! ->
This cute Nudibranch has an average size of 2-3mm but it can grow up to 5mm.
With the naked eye, you might only see a green blotch on the algae but with macro lens, you'll spot the black rhinopores, eyes and pink cerata! When you dive with us at Tulamben... you can see them all the time (and feel like a seasoned spotter)!
Fun Fact:
It is a solar powered Nudibranch! This is the only organism in the world that performs Kleptoplasty - a process that extracts chloroplasts from algae into its body for photosynthesis.
Some tips for spotting them:
• Commonly found on leaves or algae on sandy bottoms
• Can be found in shallow waters (5 to 8m)

Due to many unknowns, it is normal to fear diving! These are the greatest fear of diving and our tips to overcome them!
Biggest Fear of Diving:
1. Fear of marine animals
a. Most marine animals (big or small) are more afraid of you than you are of them! They will typically stay some distance away from you. Once you get comfortable underwater, you will see that diving is all about getting to know these marine animals.
2. Fear of breathing through a regulator
a. It might be uncomfortable for new divers to breathe through their mouth instead of their nose. Be sure to start off in a confined area till you are comfortable before moving to the open sea!
3. Fear of running out of air
a. Consistently check your gauge to ensure you have enough air! Always plan your dive beforehand and if you are diving with a guide, be sure to indicate your air balance every 10-15 minutes. Keep an eye on your dive buddy's air gauge too and vice versa.
4. Feeling claustrophobic
a. New divers may often feel like they are trapped or enclosed. Gain more experience and dive regularly to increase your levels of confidence and awareness. It's all about comfort and control! Remember, there is more space in the sea!
5. Fear of mask clearing
a. This is a core basic diving skill - no one likes to dive with a foggy mask! Practise frequently and gradually - start with half-mask exercises before attempting full mask clearing.
