Tanah Lot Temple
Pura Tanah Lot Temple is a ‘must-see’ when in Bali, located just 20km north-west of Kuta. This beautiful temple is one of Bali’s directional temples and sits just offshore on a rock in the ocean. It is famed for not only the unique setting, but also the stunning sunset backdrops.

Built in the 16th century on the recommendation of the Hindu high priest Danghyang Nirartha, this ancient shrine is a very important site for pilgrimages and plays an important role in Balinese spiritualism and mythology. It’s one of seven ocean temples on the coast of Bali that create a spiritual barrier against bad vibes rolling on the ocean currents.

The temple complex is also dotted with smaller shrines sitting along the cliff edges. The visitor facilities include shops, restaurants, and a cultural park where dance performances are regularly held.

Besakih Temple

Besakih Temple is considered to be the biggest, holiest and most important of Bali’s temples and is often referred to as Bali’s ‘mother temple’. Situated nearly 1,000 metres up the southern slopes of Gunang Agung (Sacred Mount Agung), it offers spectacular views of the surrounding Balinese scenery including mountains, rice paddies, and rivers. It is a vast site/compound made up of more than 80 individual temples, with the most important being Pura Penataran Agung. The temple is built on six levels, terraced up the slope, with the entrance is marked by a candi bentar (split gateway). Discovering this mystical and majestic site will take the best part of a day.
