TIRTA GANGGA WATER PALACE

Tirta Gangga Water Palace were designed and constructed in 1948 by Anak Agung Anglurah Ketut Karangasem (1887 - 1966), who was the last king of Karangasem. He was a remarkable man to say the least, not only because he was the architect of the water gardens but also because he helped with the construction of the gardens. A lot of people were astonished to find the Raja amidst his lower class laborers, working knee deep in the mud digging out the pools and ponds.

The gardens of Tirta Gangga Water Palace show a unique mix of Balinese and Chinese architecture. The grounds of the water garden (ca 1.2 ha.) consists of three separate complexes each with ponds and many sculptures. The complex on the lowest level has two large ponds and a water tower. At the second complex (middle level) of the Bali water palace are the swimming pools. The third level houses the main complex with the country home of the former Raja.

Nowadays one can find a restaurant and four bungalow units in this former country home of Raja A.A. Anglurah Ketut Karangasem. Building water gardens, including the designing and the labor work, was a favorite hobby of the Raja. As many of his visitors did not expect this, of course they were surprised to find the Raja himself working among his laborers, standing knee deep in mud digging out the earth.

A reservoir on the grounds receives the spring water and from this reservoir drinking water is delivered via a pipe system to the town of Amlapura. There is also an underground pipe system which leads to the upper swimming pool, where it emerges through the mouth of a raksasa (a demon statue) which stands at a corner of the pool. Here the water flows over into a lower level pool. From this lower level pool it flows into some small fish ponds and from there into the rice fields that border the gardens.

Tirta Gangga Water Palace has always been regarded as holy and is regularly used for religious temple ceremonies. With important celebration days Tirta Gangga Water Palace is the destination of colorful processions with offerings, umbrellas, flags and other tributes. Led by the local temple priests, ceremonies are held at the spring, accompanied by chanting and the music of the Beleganjur, a gamelan gong group of small gongs with each musician striking a specific, different note on the musical scale, all blending in harmony.

ULUN DANU BERATAN TEMPLE

Ulun Danu Beratan Temple is amazing places of interest in Bali, famous picturesque landmark and a significant temple complex located on the western side of the Beratan Lake in Bedugul, central Bali. The whole Bedugul area is actually a favorite cool upland weekend and holiday retreat for locals and island visitors alike from the southern and urban areas, as it is strategically located, connecting the island north and south.

Ulun Danu Beratan Temple, literally the source temple of Lake Beratan, is easily the island most iconic sanctuary sharing the scenic qualities with the seaside temples of Uluwatu and Tanah Lot. The smooth reflective surface of the lake surrounding most of the temple base creates a unique floating impression, while the mountain range of the Bedugul region encircling the lake provides the temple with a scenic backdrop.

Ulun Danu Beratan Temple was built in the 17th century in worship of the main Hindu trinity, Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva, as well as the lake goddess, Dewi Danu. The sight and cool atmosphere of the Bali uplands have made the lake and this temple a favorite sightseeing and recreational spot as well as a frequently photographed site. The history of the Ulun Danu Beratan Temple can be traced back to the rise of the Mengwi kingdom.

The floating temple complex is comprised of four groups of shrines, including the prominent Lingga Petak shrine to its east. There are four gates facing each of the four points of the compass. The second group is located in the west and pays homage to another temple in the hill of Puncak Mangu and is regarded as the symbol of soil fertility. The puncak or hilltop of Mangu is northeast of Lake Beratan.

Entering Ulun Danu Beratan Temple gates, instantly noticeable are the typical Balinese architectural features and the tiered shrines. Inside the complex, the three main shrines are dedicated to the worship of god Vishnu which boasts 11 tiers, god Brahma with seven 7 tiers and Shiva with three tiers. As the temple complex occupies a rather low lying side of the lake, the floating effect is thus featured when the lake water levels rise.

This is the time for the most perfect photo opportunities. Besides a silent witness and historical site of the golden days of the Mengwi kingdom, this temple complex is also home to a megalithic artifact in the form of a sarcophagus and stone tablet. This has led to the assumption that it was a consecrated site before the Hindu temple was built. Ulun Danu Beratan Temple anniversary ceremony or Piodalan takes place every Kliwon Julungwangi Tuesday on the Pawukon Balinese calendar cycle which occurs every 210 days.

Also a grander Piodalan Agung takes place every 420 days. However, on any other regular day the serene lake views and cool uplands are an experience itself. Visits to the Ulun Danu Beratan Temple are subject to an entrance fee of IDR 15,000 for domestic tourists and IDR 30,000 for foreigners. Those who want more than scenery may hire traditional jukung outriggers to tour the lake as well as motorized boats for a quicker ride.

The other side of the Beratan Lake also offers various water sports such as parasailing and jet skis. Close to the temple complex visitors can hire fishing gear and bait to pass the time away on the lakeside. The Eka Karya Botanical Gardens is also a highlight of the Bedugul region, with access located nearby.

ULUWATU TEMPLE

Uluwatu Temple is one of the best tourist destination to visit during the sunset time and this place is very crowded by tourist everyday. Balinese called this temple is Pura Luhur Uluwatu is one of six key temples believed to be Bali spiritual pillars. Is renowned for its magnificent location, perched on top of a steep cliff approximately 70 meters above sea level. This temple also shares the splendid sunset backdrops as that of Tanah Lot Temple, another important sea temple located in the island western shores.

Pura Luhur Uluwatu is definitely one of the top places on the island to go to for sunset delights, with direct views overlooking the beautiful Indian Ocean and daily Kecak dance performances. Balinese architecture, traditionally designed gateways and ancient sculptures add to Uluwatu Temple appeal. Without a doubt, what makes Uluwatu Temple spectacular is its cliff top setting at the edge of a plateau 250 feet above the waves of the Indian Ocean. Ulu means the top or the tip and watu means a stone or a rock in Balinese. Several archaeological remains found here prove the temple to be of megalithic origin, dating back to around the 10th century.

There are two entrances to Uluwatu Temple, from the south and the north. A small forest lies at the front and hundreds of monkeys dwell here. They are believed to guard the temple from bad influences, the serpentine pathway to Uluwatu Temple is fortified by concrete walls on the cliff side. It takes about an hour to get from one end to another as there are several fenced points along the way to stop. The views from the bottom of the water surging up against rocks and the ocean horizon are remarkable. The Balinese Hindus believe that the three divine powers of Brahma, Vishnu and Siva become one here.

That belief results in making Uluwatu Temple a place of worship of Siva Rudra, the Balinese Hindu deity of all elements and aspects of life in the universe. Pura Uluwatu is also dedicated to protect Bali from evil sea spirits. Inscriptions mention that Uluwatu Temple was instigated by Mpu Kunturan, a Majapahit monk who also participated in establishing several other important temples in Bali such as Pura Sakenan in Denpasar, about 1,000 years ago. A holy priest from eastern Java, Dhang Hyang Dwijendra, then chose Uluwatu Temple to be his spiritual journey final worshiping place.

Balinese Hindu devotees believe that he reached the highest spiritual point of oneness with deities by a strike of lightning and completely disappeared. Legend, however, says that Dhang Hyang Dwijendra (also frequently referred to by name as Danghyang Nirartha) was the architect of Uluwatu Temple and several other temples in Bali, Lombok, as well as Sumbawa. Until 1983, Uluwatu Temple was hardly accessible and a lightning strike in 1999 set some parts of the temple on fire. The temple has had some restorations since it was first built.

Behind the main shrine in one of the courtyards of Uluwatu Temple lies a Brahmin statue facing the Indian Ocean, considered as a representation of Dhang Hyang Dwijendra. The two entrances to the temple area are split gates with leaves and flowers carvings. In front of each of them are a couple of sculptures shaped like a human body with an elephant head. A heritage of the 10th century is the one piece winged stone gate to the inside courtyard of Uluwatu Temple. Winged gates are not commonly found on the island. An addition to Pura Uluwatu in the 16th century is Pura Dalem Jurit.

There are three statues in it, one of them is of Brahma. There are two stone troughs in the temple area. If both of them are joined, they create a sarcophagus (Megalithic coffin). Uluwatu Beach, below the cliff, is one of Bali best internationally known surfing spots. Every six months according to the Balinese 210 day Pawukon cycle, big temple anniversary celebrations are held at Uluwatu Temple. The temple keeper, the royal family of Jro Kuta from Denpasar, are patrons for the event. Precautionary signs warn visitors of the monkeys grabbing attractive items such as sunglasses and cameras.

However, they can be calmer when approached with peanuts or bananas, lending an opportunity to retake stolen possessions. There has not been any significant erosion on the shoreline underneath the temple towering cliff. Believers regard it as a manifestation of the divine power that protects Uluwatu Temple. Public facilities are available, but not in the temple area. Unlike some other tourist destinations in Bali, Uluwatu Temple area has limited amounts of hassling vendors. Visitors must wear a sarong and a sash, as well as appropriate clothes common for temple visits.

They can be hired here, the best time to visit is just before sunset. A Kecak dance is performed everyday at the adjacent cliff top stage at 18:00 to 19:00. Visitors are charged a nominal fee. What makes it the most favorite venue to watch a Kecak dance is the sunset background of the performance. There is no public transportation to get here and going back in to town will be difficult without any prearranged ride or taxi. A guide is not necessary, though helpful. The service offered is hassle free at very minimum prices.

UBUD ART MARKET

Ubud Art Market locally referred to as Pasar Seni Ubud is located opposite the the Puri Saren Royal Ubud Palace and is open daily. Here you can find beautiful silk scarves, lightweight shirts, handmade woven bags, baskets or hats, statues, kites and many other hand crafted goods. Most of the goods found at the Ubud Market are made in the neighboring villages of Pengosekan, Tegallalang, Payangan and Peliatan.

The location of Ubud Art Market which is center among the art producing villages, and being just opposite the royal palace which is a center point to Ubud itself, make it a strategic shopping place for Balinese handicrafts and souvenirs. The market also serves as a setting for the Hollywood movie Eat Pray Love, which shows a scene where actress Julia Roberts opposite a male character strolling through the stalls which are frequently visited by foreign and domestic visitors in real life.

Naturally, bargaining is essential. A holiday in Bali always calls for some sort of shopping for souvenirs or memorabilia of the trip, and the best place to make the search would be in the artistic central region of the island, namely Ubud and its Ubud Art Market. Bali art markets in general are always on itinerary lists especially as the various items sold are typically Balinese, unique and some unavailable elsewhere.

In Ubud case, most visitors favorite leisure includes easy strolls to the heart of the town, made possible by footpaths that virtually pass every aspect of Balinese culture and life. Ubud Art Market is one among the laid-back strolls, reachable from the Wanara Wana Monkey Forest Sanctuary just down south, an approximate kilometer from the market. Shopping here is not always about an actual purchase.

Viewing the various items on display from one stall to another is a highlight on its own, showing the craftsmanship and the artistry of the Balinese. Admiring all the shops and stalls usually cannot be accomplished in one day. So if you spot an item of your interest, you might come back another day to bargain or settle the deal. Compared to art markets in Bali other main tourism destinations such as Kuta, Ubud Art Market can be considered to feature higher quality items and a larger mixture.

Although beach cloths and shirts printer with Bali on them, and ikat woven skirts, Balinese style paintings, woodcarvings and woven baskets can be found almost everywhere on the island, items ranging from quadruple colored bohemian skirts of satin, Moroccan-style oil lamps, quilt-stitched batik camisoles and brass Buddha statuettes, are somewhat the staple, typical of the market curios.

Ubud Art Market offers not only exemplary Balinese items, but rather a universal and international assortment, catering to visitors of all tastes. The items found here also tend to of a higher artistic value compared to other art markets such as Kuta. Prices vary depending on your bargaining skills, haggling is expected and indeed encouraged as part of the fun of shopping, but do so politely and with a smile.

It is often helpful to decide upon the most you want to pay for an item before you start bargaining. Unlike the various shops aligning the Monkey Forest road, most stalls at Ubud Art Market bear no barcode or set price, so start bargaining which is a customary. Start at about half the asking price and go up till a compromise is reached. Refrain from buying anything if it is the first day of your holiday.

Do a little survey while you are enjoying your first day and get accustomed with the prices. Ubud Art Market is open daily from 08:00 to 18:00, and some of the stalls are even open until late at night. The market is divided into two main allotments. The western block is the main art market, and an eastern block is a traditional market serving daily groceries and necessities.

1. The Gods bless life and created nature and all of its entities
2. Nature provide sustainable support to the need of living beings
3. Human beings as the highest being has the obligation to preserve the mother nature which was in the past only religious approach could operate before more reasons could take over the role.

Based on an analysis of a manuscript called Pura Purana ( meaning history of a Pura ) which is considered a holy writing the temple was built around 14th century during the reign of kings with the palace in Pejeng area. If this assumption is taken the establishment of the temple would be before 1343 AD, not at the beginning of Gelgel Palace which is far behind around 17th century.

There are three temples in The Sacred Monkey Forest namely :
1. Pura Dalem Agung, located at the south western corner of the main forest area. This temple is the most prominent in Monkey Forest

The adult females are smaller then the males ( 4-8 kgs ) and have long facial hair resembling beads. Foreign tourists usually call it as Virgin Beach because the beach is far from the crowds and still natural. While other foreign tourists call this beach as White Sand Beach because only this beach around Karangasem city has white sand.

Although the actual color of the beach sand is not whiter than Padang Padang Beach or Pandawa Beach. The white sand on this beach depends on the volcanic content of Mount Agung. Yes, Virgin Beach is only about 33 km from Mount Agung. If you drive, it will take around one and a half hours to get here. To visit Virgin Beach you can ask local residents because the access to this beach is relatively far from the city center, even you have to find some road instructions to get to the beach. So for your convenience, you may rent a vehicle, it's better if the driver are local resident who understands the area. Virgin Beach is located close to Candidasa. If you are already at Candidasa, then be prepared to notice a small sign that says "White Sand Beach" on the right side of the road. You need extra attention to find this small board because it will be covered with trees around. Follow the directions until you get to Virgin Beach.

Once there, you will find a peaceful beach, the waves are not too big so it is swimmable, and also beachside food stalls. Even if you want to enjoy the serenity in this hidden beach, you can rent a sundeck while having a massage from local residents. If you are bored and want to snorkel, don't worry because there is a place to rent snorkeling equipment around the beach.
