Bli Nyoman - To Where You Are, Only a Breath Away.

37 years old when he died of pancreatic cancer on 09 August 2013. his birthday in 2025 would have been the 49th birthday of a remarkable artist and friend - I Nyoman Sura.

Born in 1975 in the Denpasar suburb of Kesiman to a farming family, as a young boy, Sura was irresistibly drawn to his local Banjar, where he idolized his village’s dancers by imitating their every movement. After high school, and already accomplished in the Balinese traditional dance repertoire, Nyoman earned a bachelor’s degree in dance at the Indonesian Arts Academy (ISI).

In command of Bali’s traditional dance repertoire, Nyoman Sura was equally drawn to modern and contemporary dance, quickly earning praise for his dance and choreography skills. ISI soon appointed Nyoman to its teaching faculty,

Excelling in contemporary dance, Nyoman quickly earned a reputation for performing at international festivals, mesmerizing thousands worldwide. Bold, beautiful, and an eyeful on several levels, Nyoman Sura caused uproars; when performing abroad, where he danced in revealing costumes consisting of a single sheath of diaphanous cloth or less.

Underlining this point, one obituary in the Indonesian press praised the bold “naked creativity” of this Balinese dancer.

Back home, officials, who might otherwise have imposed sanctions against any “local boy” carrying on "au natural" on stages abroad, must have felt restrained in their condemnation by the torrent of praise and accolades being heaped upon the Bali-born rising star in international dance circles.

Further evidence of Nyoman Sura’s well-deserved notoriety is the fact that, on an island with no shortage of male dancers, in the 12 years since his death, no rival has yet emerged to fill the vacuum left by the farmboy who rose to great heights in the international dance community.

I have no intent to "stir the pot," but the long-term devastation caused by the Myanmar-Thailand earthquake on Friday, 28 March, may prove difficult to calculate. It may be prudent for the government authorities to appoint an acknowledged international engineering firm to individually and independently certify ALL multi-storey office, residential, commercial, and hotel structures as physically safe for reoccupation.
The images of falling and swaying skyscrapers will be difficult to erase from the world's imagination. I seriously wonder if travelers will book stays in one of Bangkok's tall hotels without some sort of "official" and believable third-party certification that it is safe to do so.
Thai and Myanmar officials need to acknowledge "the elephant in the room" and restore public confidence by whatever means possible in their hotel industry,
