BREAKING: Global coral bleaching event confirmed by NOAA: severe impact on Coral Reef Communities

The global coral bleaching event, announced today by the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and International Coral Reef Initiative (ICRI), has already and will continue to have severe negative consequences for coastal communities and ocean health.

The event announcement means wide swathes of tropical reefs in the three largest ocean basins โ€“ the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian โ€“ are experiencing extreme stress. Sufficiently severe or prolonged stress can cause coral mortality. The loss of coral has devastating impacts not only on ocean life, but on the millions of people who rely on these valuable ecosystems for food, livelihoods and coastal protection.

The Coral Reef Rescue Initiative (CRRI) operates in each of these Oceans, seeking conservation of coral reefs that remain resilient and may recover under the right conditions, offering hope for the long-term health of coral reefs if immediate measures are implemented to curb future climate warming.

โ€œIn light of this global coral bleaching event announcement by NOAA, it is more important than ever to increase our efforts to protect specific reefs that have exhibited resilience to marine heatwaves and can help in the future to re-seed damaged coral reefs. We must focus on limiting pressures from overexploitation, pollution and over-development on these resilient reefs to enable their survival in a changing climate,โ€ says Carol Phua, Coral Reef Rescue Initiative Lead.

โ€˜Part of the solution to saving the enormously valuable reefs will involve working with coral reef-dependent communities in countries where climate-resilient reefs are found by building resilience to environmental, economic, and social stresses through diversified skills and sustainable and equitable economic opportunities.โ€™

Many coastal communities have done little to contribute to climate change, but are vulnerable to the effects.

โ€œWeโ€™ve experienced mass coral bleaching in 2010, then 2016, and this year. This year felt worse, as bleached coral not only occurs in its ecosystems, but also in our restoration structures. Restoration structures are one of our active conservation efforts, to revive coral reefs, providing a house for reef fish, and tourism attraction related to our local income. I really hope bleaching does not make coral die, if so our active conservation efforts like restoration would be in vain" says Nyoman Sugiarta, head of the community monitoring group for Bondalem's Locally Managed Marine Area and dive instructor in Bondalem village, Bali, Indonesia.

Konservasi Terumbu Karang Berkelanjutan dan Mandiri berbasis Masyarakat

Kunjungan delegasi U.S.

Have you heard about the secret life of manta rays? These graceful ocean giants need to stop by the salon from time to time to get a good cleaning! Giant mantas often catch unwanted hitchhikers such as parasites which can be difficult to remove on one's own without the assistance of hands or a beak. That's where their salons, or 'cleaning station', come in handy. At these stations wrasses, a small reef fish, will clean the manta of their unwanted guests thus receiving a free meal in exchange = in the science world we call that a symbiotic relationship.

Did you know butterflyfish are used as a bio-indicator species? Wondering what that is? That means this species, their presence or absence, is used as an indication of reef health. Basically, that means if you see them great if you see lots even better and if you don't see any things could be in trouble!

Reef Check Indonesia Partners with Fauna Conservation NFT

Have you ever heard of an NFT?

This month weโ€™re excited to learn about a project Reef Check Indonesia is undertaking with Fauna Conservation NFT. Fauna Conservation NFT is a start-up social enterprise that uses NFTs to raise funding for conservation.

An NFT, or non-fungible token, is a digital asset stored on a blockchain to verify its authenticity. It can be any type of file, such as an image, a video, an audio file, or even a 3D model. Fauna Conservation NFT and Reef Check Indonesia, with the support of the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the Indonesia Climate Change Trust Fund (ICCTF), and Impact Hub Manila, are launching a collection of 15 NFTs of various marine and reef species which will help to raise funds for Reef Checkโ€™s work in Indonesia helping local communities to manage and utilize marine and coastal resources in a sustainable manner, and to adapt to climate change.

This project was a direct result of the ADBโ€™s โ€œNFTs for Developmentโ€ competition in 2021.

The first three NFTs have already been released on OpenSea, a large online marketplace for NFTs, which you can view and purchase here โ€“ https://opensea.io/FaunaNFT. The idea behind the project is to bring the process of giving or donating into the new technological age of cryptocurrency. Buyers can purchase an NFT, in this case, a beautiful, realistic, 3D model of their favorite marine species, and in the process, support the conservation of these creatures they love so much.

Is this the only way to raise conservation funding for Reef Check? No โ€“ you can also very much donate directly. Do you need to be a crypto expert to join the party? Certainly not, these days, there are many options for the crypto novice to join the fray, and NFTs are a great entry point, where you get a permanent collectible for your purchase and the knowledge youโ€™re conserving some of the earthโ€™s most threatened ecosystems.
