About ULUWATU TEMPLE!
Uluwatu Temple is famous for its natural beauty and strategic location. Etymologically, Ulu means tip, Watu means Watu. So, Uluwatu Temple is interpreted as a holy place on the top of a rock.
This temple is one of the important religious sites in Bali. Unlike other temples that generally face west or south, Uluwatu Temple faces east. Let's find out the history, attractions, location, route, and operating hours for tourists.
History of Uluwatu Temple
There are two opinions regarding the history of the establishment of Uluwatu Temple. According to a journal entitled Uluwatu Temple, from Temple to Tourist Object from the Islamic University of Indonesia, the first opinion says that Uluwatu Temple was founded by Mpu Kuturan in the 9th century, during the Marakata government.
Meanwhile, another opinion links the construction of Uluwatu Temple with a pedanda (priest) from the Daha Kingdom (Kediri), East Java. Dang Hyang Nirartha came to Bali in 1546 AD, during the reign of Dalem Waturenggong.
He founded Uluwatu Temple on Pecatu Hill. After traveling around the island of Bali on a spiritual journey, the signer returned to Uluwatu Temple. This is where Dang Hyang Nirartha 'moksa', which is the release of the soul from worldly things in Hindu and Buddhist teachings.
The Attraction of Uluwatu Temple
Uluwatu Temple has various attractions, especially because of the natural beauty of its surroundings. 1. Located on a Cliff
Uluwatu Temple is located on a high cliff at a height of about 70 m above the waves of the Indian Ocean. To get to the temple location, people have to climb quite high stone steps.
From above, the beauty of the vast ocean can be seen. Visitors can also enjoy the expanse of calming waves under the cliff.
2. Sunset View
Visitors can see the beautiful sunset view of the Indian Ocean when visiting Uluwatu Temple. It is no wonder that many local and foreign tourists come to watch this sunset on the cliff.
3. Kecak Dance Performance
The Kecak dance performance is so typical at Uluwatu Temple. This traditional Balinese dance is performed by male dancers who sit cross-legged in a circle while singing the typical "cak" melody. Dance performances are usually performed at sunset, giving the feel of dusk on the open ocean
Location and Route to Uluwatu Temple
Uluwatu Temple is located in Pecatu Village, South Kuta District, Badung Regency, Bali. From Ngurah Rai Bali Airport, the travel time is about one hour.
The route that can be taken is by following Jl Airport Ngurah Rai to the east, then turn left onto Jl By Pass Ngurah Rai. Turn sharply right, towards Jl Uluwatu, then turn left towards Jl Raya Uluwatu. Then, turn slightly left towards Jl Raya Uluwatu and turn right onto Jl. Pantai Suluban. Arrive at Uluwatu Temple.
