The Origin and Meaning of Balinese Names
If you are in Bali, you will often hear typical Balinese names, including Wayan, Made, Nyoman, Ketut, and so on. All of these names apparently have meaning.
We start first with the terms I and Ni in Balinese names. The letter I in front of the name Wayan, for example, is an article meaning male. Meanwhile, the article marking female gender is Ni. I and Ni also mean a man and a woman from an ordinary community family, without caste or usually called jaba people. If he was born into a family of iron smiths, then this Balinese would be named Pande. If Wayan's title is Ida Bagus, he was certainly born into a Brahmin family. Ida Bagus means Handsome or Respectable. If only he was called the Great Child, then he was born into a noble family.
The name Wayan comes from the word "wayahan" which means the most mature.
The second child's title is Made which is rooted in the word "Madia" which means middle.
The third child was called Nyoman, which etymologically comes from the word "uman" which means "remnant" or "end".
So according to the Balinese way of life, a family should only have three children. After having three children, we are advised to be more "wise". However, in ancient times, traditional herbal medicines were less effective in preventing pregnancy, coitus interruptus was not worth relying on, and abortion was always seen as evil, so a husband and wife might have more than three children.
The fourth child's title is Ketut. It comes from the ancient word "Kitut" which means a small banana at the outermost tip of a banana comb. He is a beloved "bonus" child. Because of the family planning program recommended by the government, there are fewer and fewer Balinese people named Ketut. That is why there are concerns among Balinese people that this beloved term will become extinct.
Wayan, Made, Nyoman, Ketut
According to the balirustique com website, Balinese people have a taboo or taboo that farmers cannot mention rats, which in Bali are called bikul, when they are in the rice fields. Mentioning mice in the rice fields is believed to be a spell that can summon mice. For this reason, when he is in the rice fields, people call him by the special nickname "Jero Ketut". It means little master. This departs from the view that mice are somehow part of the balance of nature.
If family planning fails, and a family has more than four children, then starting from the fifth child, the Balinese repeat the cycle of titles above. The fifth child has the title Wayan, the sixth is Made, and so on.
However, if we talk in more detail, the three Balinese birth hierarchy titles are synonymous;
for = Wayan same with Putu or Gede
for = Made same with Kadek or Nengah
for = Nyoman or Komang. Meanwhile, the special name Ketut is not synonymous.
Like Javanese, Balinese people do not have clan names or family names. So if you look at it from a western perspective, Balinese people only have first names without family names. It is said that this made it easier for people to disguise themselves in times of war. Even if forced, after a military defeat, a noble could claim to be a commoner. And all his descendants were forced to use the title I or Ni.
Even though they don't know clan or fam names, there are also Balinese people who for generations have clearly added clan or sub-clan names such as Dusak, Pendit, etc. after their first names. For example (only engineering), Wayan Sujana Pendit. In modern times, when family names have become important for passport purposes or if you live abroad, some progressive Balinese families have created new surnames which are usually taken from the name of a highly educated and "successful" father.
Many things have changed in Bali since Indonesia's independence. If in the past people named their children as they pleased, often without meaning, or just onomatopoeia, nowadays, people are starting to use names that come from Sanskrit. There are also names of Balinese people now that have a 'western feel' such as I Ketut Bobby or Ni Luh Ayu Jasmine.
