Limnonectes kuhlii / Kuhl's Creek Frog / Kuhl's Wart Frog
In West Java, we call it Bangkong Tuli or Deaf Frog. That's because its hidden tympanum makes it looks earless, and people just assumed that it's deaf!
But above all, they are a great bioindicator. Having them around at least gives a peace of mind that we still have good water sources to count on.
Oh... And listen to the water stream 🔊👂💚

The first morning we took @tropicalcol to the campsite in one of our national parks, he mentioned how silent this part of the forest was.
A few days after we dropped off Colin a.k.a Untung back in the airport, we heard a friend who works for our governor talking about silent forests, he was kind of complaining about how many foreigners were labeling us as such. The good news is the government is already prepared with some set of laws to handle the phenomenon.
So when we had the chance to meet other foreigners, @robinjamesnaturephoto & @2veasey , we asked them about this, and they had apparently not only heard about it, but are concerned about the issue as well.
We've been ruminating on the topic ever since, and so we tried to have more conversations with people in the field (mostly because we couldn't find any objective data on the matter). And three of our friends who had just gotten back from many sides of Indonesian forests, mostly the less travelled ones, especially by foreigners, said there are MANY places in Indonesian forests that are still full of the singing birds symphony.
But if the question is...whether or not there are places here in Indonesia in which there used to be a lot of singing birds that have way less of them now?... the answer is YES
In Indonesia, owning a singing bird can be a form of social status. We even have singing bird competitions with crazy big prices. So it doesn't take a genius to guess where we are heading if we don't do anything about it.
In an ideal world, we would live in a community that appreciates the ecological value of every ecosystem and every species in it. But until then, the least that us here at Lampa-Lampa can do is promote eco-tourism, and show that having these animals roam free in the wild has the same economical value as (or perhaps even more than) when it's inside a cage. Hoping it will slowly decrease the obsession of owning wild animals in the house, for whatever reason.

It is not every day that you see a bunch of people wearing boots and headlamps, walking on the side of a typical West Java road—busy, almost chaotic, bumpy, and with no pedestrians—not to mention that two of them are foreigners 😁
But after encountering Xenodermus Javanicus in the jungle of West Java, @robinjamesnaturephoto and @2veasey had a request for this unique snake that only exists in Java and Vietnam, but nowhere in between. As our local legendary herpetologist (a lot of people would agree with us on this) @didisaefulmahdi of course, has this little secret place to find it. A place he discovered out of curiosity while motorbiking along this road with bushes on the side, and his herpetofauna nerd antenna blinking, sensing that these bushes were good herpetofauna habitat. And of course, he wasn’t wrong.
So there we were, at night, under the curious eyes of motorcycle and car drivers, encountering at least three different snake species in the middle of a city’s bushes.
Thank you, Robin and Sam, for letting us give you a ride on your west java adventure!
And also special thanks to @wildlifebymade who let us use his Ahaetulla cf. rufusoculara photo

You probably didn't expect to suddenly see this quality of picture on our timeline 😂
The luck started when @tropicalcol kindly allowed us to craft his adventure here in West Java, and it doubled when he generously permitted us to use his amazing photos on our Insta account. Crazy, right? A wildlife photographer with his caliber!
So, we want to take this precious opportunity to remind you that even though West Java is the most populated province on the most populated island in the fourth most populated country in the world, it doesn't mean we lack amazing wildlife and a diverse range of biodiversity.
These three beautiful snakes are just a small example from one of our three National Parks in West Java.
If being in nature excites you, or if you have a specific flora/fauna target here in the jungle (or even in our urban bushes) of Java, allow us to craft your tour and show you how amazing Java truly is!
