MAHODAYA – formerly named “Amanikan” – is an authentic phinisi vessel constructed by master wooden boat builders of eastern Indonesia. Their highly-skilled craftsmanship and unique artistry have earned them recognition from UNESCO, which has designated phinisi boats as “Masterpieces” of traditional Indonesian culture and heritage.
MAHODAYA’s elegantly appointed interiors were created by the late Jaya Ibrahim, renowned designer of some of the world’s leading properties.
All MAHODAYA Luxury Yacht renovations and upgrades were carried out by the original design team and wood workers who retain a deep attachment to the vessel.
Construction was first commissioned by Adrian Zecha, the founder of Regent Hotels, Rafael Hotels, Amanresorts, and the new and notable Azerai Resorts.
The vessel was built in 2009, and since then has voyaged extensively throughout the Indonesian archipelago under the “Amanikan” name, playing host to so many prominent international visitors.
Now independent, the ship’s name has been changed to Mahodaya, a Sanskrit word meaning “great fortune or prosperity”.

Diving in the Banda Sea allows for many opportunities to encounter rare and unique organisms. This weedy scorpionfish was found in Ambon Bay, though their range is throughout the tropical seas. A member of the scorpionfish family, like their relatives they are ambush predators that most often feed at night.

We never tire of the very best of views, and we're not ashamed to admit this is a beach that features heavily in our images. Kalig beach in the Misool area of Raja Ampat has everything you could ever dream about. It's a private beach, has the finest of powder white sand, in the water there's only the clearest sand making it perfect for rinsing off. Complete with young coconut trees fringing the high tide line and a breathtaking viewpoint from the corner, this is a beach you'll be in no hurry to leave.

An uncountable number of different deserted beaches and islands offer so many possibilities for exploration both above and below the waves. The waters that flow through the Komodo National Park are diverse and full of life and colour. Green and Hawksbill turtles can be found in various location, such as this individual we found in the shallows at Tattawa.

Nutrient rich waters flow north from the Indian Ocean, with the many shallow channels around Komodo allowing coral growth and enabling a spectacular feeding frenzy which manifests itself as an explosion of colour and diversity, with a huge number of hard and soft coral species to be found.

From May onwards the dry season begins and so too does our Komodo season. Starting from Labuan Bajo, the Komodo National Park is but a short sail away, and unique encounters await. Trekking on the islands of Rinca and Komodo offer opportunities to see various species such as the fabled Komodo dragon, buffalo, deer and monkeys in their natural habitat.

Having walked amongst dragons many further activities await, from the famous sunrise / sunset trek on Padar to various beaches and a huge number of possibilities with in water activities such as scuba diving and snorkeling.

One of our most challenging activities but extremely rewarding and well worth the early start. The ascent to the top of Banda Volcano or Banda Api takes upwards of 90 minutes but the panoramic views are unforgettable. In various points around the top of this peak vents can be found releasing hot steam, some of which are picture here with the tiny Banda Neira in the background.

October is almost upon us which means it's time to begin to look eastwards and to our Raja Ampat season. As well as the unbeatable underwater life, the Papua region is famous for so much more. Enjoy an early morning walk in the jungle escorted by your crew and a local guide, in search of famous bird species endemic to Papua. Birds of paradise are a family containing 42 species who are famous for their spectacular plumages and elaborate courtship dances and behaviours. Picture above is the Red Bird of Paradise, with a number of excited males jostling for position as the sun rises, displaying to impress the female. Free diving fun with a pod of hungry dolphins, make sure you wait for the special appearance at the end! Bagans or traditional Indonesian floating fishing platforms drop their large fishing nets just before dark and use bright lights to attract small baitfish such as anchovie. Whale sharks have long since figured out a ticket to an easy meal is to congregate here in the morning and suck the fish out through the gaps in the nets. In the various areas around Indonesia, rather than leading to conflict this competition for the fish led to a positive relationship developing between fishermen and whale sharks with the local people believing they bring good luck.
