MAHODAYA – formerly named “Amanikan” – is an authentic phinisi vessel constructed by master wooden boat builders of eastern Indonesia. Their highly-skilled craftsmanship and unique artistry have earned them recognition from UNESCO, which has designated phinisi boats as “Masterpieces” of traditional Indonesian culture and heritage.
MAHODAYA’s elegantly appointed interiors were created by the late Jaya Ibrahim, renowned designer of some of the world’s leading properties.
All MAHODAYA Luxury Yacht renovations and upgrades were carried out by the original design team and wood workers who retain a deep attachment to the vessel.
Construction was first commissioned by Adrian Zecha, the founder of Regent Hotels, Rafael Hotels, Amanresorts, and the new and notable Azerai Resorts.
The vessel was built in 2009, and since then has voyaged extensively throughout the Indonesian archipelago under the “Amanikan” name, playing host to so many prominent international visitors.
Now independent, the ship’s name has been changed to Mahodaya, a Sanskrit word meaning “great fortune or prosperity”.

Diving in the Banda Sea allows for many opportunities to encounter rare and unique organisms. This weedy scorpionfish was found in Ambon Bay, though their range is throughout the tropical seas. A member of the scorpionfish family, like their relatives they are ambush predators that most often feed at night.

We never tire of the very best of views, and we're not ashamed to admit this is a beach that features heavily in our images. Kalig beach in the Misool area of Raja Ampat has everything you could ever dream about. It's a private beach, has the finest of powder white sand, in the water there's only the clearest sand making it perfect for rinsing off. Complete with young coconut trees fringing the high tide line and a breathtaking viewpoint from the corner, this is a beach you'll be in no hurry to leave.

The waters that flow through the Komodo National Park are diverse and full of life and colour. Green and Hawksbill turtles can be found in various location, such as this individual we found in the shallows at Tattawa.

Nutrient rich waters flow north from the Indian Ocean, with the many shallow channels around Komodo allowing coral growth and enabling a spectacular feeding frenzy which manifests itself as an explosion of colour and diversity, with a huge number of hard and soft coral species to be found.

From May onwards the dry season begins and so too does our Komodo season. Starting from Labuan Bajo, the Komodo National Park is but a short sail away, and unique encounters await. Trekking on the islands of Rinca and Komodo offer opportunities to see various species such as the fabled Komodo dragon, buffalo, deer and monkeys in their natural habitat.

Having walked amongst dragons many further activities await, from the famous sunrise / sunset trek on Padar to various beaches and a huge number of possibilities with in water activities such as scuba diving and snorkeling.

One of our most challenging activities but extremely rewarding and well worth the early start. The ascent to the top of Banda Volcano or Banda Api takes upwards of 90 minutes but the panoramic views are unforgettable. In various points around the top of this peak vents can be found releasing hot steam, some of which are picture here with the tiny Banda Neira in the background.

Some of our most memorable moments onboard are times like these where the atmosphere indistinguishably blends with the ocean at the horizon. The calmness of the sea mirrors spectacularly the whispy clouds above while the motion of the vessel gliding across the surface gives the impression of cutting through glass. Corals can be found in all the world's oceans from the incredible shallow water reefs in the tropics to the bottom of deep cold and dark oceans. Numbering around 6,000 known species, their value is far more than providing protection for fish and coastlines, they're also hugely vaulable in the production of new medicines and treatments.

Soft corals like these pictured are so called as they do not form the calcium carbonate structures of their shallower cousins. Rather their skeletons are more wooden like and they rely on currents to catch their prey. Concentrations of such corals in these underwater gardens of Eden offer truly unrivalled diversity and beauty.

Chromodoris willani or Willan's chromodoris, is one of the most common nudibranchs you can find in the waters of Raja Ampat. Whether night or daytime they can be found in various locations on reef walls and slopes, seeking out food, friends or laying eggs!

Amidst the back volcanic sands of Pisang, giant rocks are strewn around the beach like stacked lego bricks. A very unique island located to the west of Raja Ampat, the volcanic landscape is home to many surprises while the diverse plant life including cloves - one of the famous spices - thrives in the local conditions.

Toadfish are a varied species and different species can be found across the worlds oceans at a range of depths. In sandy environments in eastern Indonesian waters the banded toadfish (Halophryne diemensis) can be found. Toadfish are famed for their ability to sing, with males inparticular using their swim bladders to produce the romantic tones necessary to attract a mate.
