Kanazawa, meaning ‘golden marsh”, is the capital city of Ishikawa Prefecture, on the western Japan Sea coast of Honshu. It’s major attractions include the Kanazawa castle, the traditional tea houses lining the Higashi Chaya Geisha District and Kenrokuen Garden, which is considered as one of Japan’s three great gardens. It retains a large portion of its old-Japan charm with a lot of sites preserved well through the times.
From 1583 till the end of the Edo period, Kanazawa Castle was helmed by the Maeda Clan, second only in size and wealth to the Tokugawa Clan. The Castle has burnt down several times over the centuries. The most recent fire in 1881 left only 2 storehouses and the Ishikawa-mon Gate. The Castle has since been rebuilt and the gate remains standing, dating from 1788 and faces the Kenrokuen.
The Kenrokuen is justifiably, one of Japan’s 3 most beautiful landscape gardens. The sprawling grounds used to serve as the outer garden of the Kanazawa Castle. Since it’s opening to the public in 1871, Kenrokuen features a variety of flowering trees, giving the garden its various looks throughout the seasons of the year
To access Kanazawa, Take the Thunderbird Limited Express from Osaka. The train journey takes about 2hours and 40 mins to reach Kanazawa Station from Osaka Station.

Along the shores of the Sea of Japan, just outside Tottori City lays Japan’s only sand dunes [Tottori Sakyu]. Stretching across 16 kilometers from east to west and 2.4 kilometers from north to south, rising almost 160 feet above sea level, the Tottori Sand Dunes are the largest Sand dunes in Japan. In the center of the dunes is a long and narrow plateau, Horse’s Back, where the scenic views of the golden sand dunes merging with the sparkling blue Sea of Japan can be enjoyed. The sand dunes are accessible throughout the day from the warm morning sunrise to the red setting sun.
The Sand Dunes were formed thousands of years ago by strong winds and currents of the Sendai River depositing the sand along the coast, creating a desert oasis. The Sand dunes also host a number of attractions such as horse-drawn cart or camel rides and even paragliding or sand boarding. There is even an observation deck at the Sakyu Center accessible from the sand dunes by chair lifts.
A short walk away from the sand dunes lies the Sand Museum, a unique museum that displays large sand sculptures by various artists around the world. The exhibitions are themes and are changed annually so visitors will always have something new to explore.
The Tottori Sakyu can be reached by limited express train from JR Okayama Station to Tottori Station (2 hours) followed by a short 20 minutes bus ride to ‘Tottori Sakyu’

Izumo Taisha Grand Shrine, Hagi City is famous for its dedication to Okuninushi-no-okami, known as the deity of en-musubi (creation and arrangement of relationships). Gods throughout Japan gather once every year for a meeting called “Kamuhakari” where they discuss the linking of fates, binding of ties, or in the case of romantic relationships, matchmaking.
It is held during the 10th month of the lunar calendar which is why, here in the Izumo Region, that month is called “Kamiari zuki” or The Month of the Gods. Visited yearly by a large number of worshipers, Izumo Taisha is popular as a “land of matchmaking.”
Just took 10-minutes by walk from Ichibata Electric Railway Izumotaisha-mae Station, or 30 minutes by Ichibata bus from Izumoshi Station to Izumo Taisha, getting off at Seimon-mae bus stop.
