Bat Island, also known as “Kalong Island” in Komodo National Park, is home to a large population of fruit bats (also called flying foxes).
The reason there are so many bats on the island is due to the abundance of food and the island’s unique ecosystem. The bats are attracted to the rich supply of fruits, especially during the evening when they come out to feed. Kalong Island offers a perfect habitat with plenty of trees and a peaceful environment for them to roost during the day. As the bats feed on the fruits, they play an important role in the island’s ecology, helping with pollination and seed dispersal. The sight of thousands of bats taking flight at dusk is a unique and mesmerizing experience for visitors!
