Presean or stick fighting is part of traditional Lombok culture. It is a fight between two local Sasak men to prove their masculinity. They are armed with rattan sticks & shields made from buffalo skin. The competitors are chosen for their strength & courage & wear only a sarong. It is believed the more blood loss the more rain will fall for the crops so can be quite an aggressive sport but is an amazing spectacle to witness.

The official wedding celebration in Lombok is called Nyongkolan; this is where the entire village gets together and marches down the streets towards the house of the bride. The parade-like fiasco involves all participants to be dressed in traditional Sasak clothing; pounding drums and singing songs in a very joyful manner as a way to celebrate the blessed union of the newly wedded couple. Food is brought on this joyous occasion and once the party has arrived at the bride’s home, the feast begins and the wedding celebration comes to an end.

I was chilling in the forest this morning..as you do.. when one of the park rangers turned up with this beautiful python. I panicked at first thinking they were going to harm it but he had rescued it from one of the local villages. As you can see it was halfway through eating a local chicken! So would not have been popular with the villagers. I was soon reassured that he had brought it to the forest to release it.
The park rangers are amazing here protecting the forests & the creatures that reside in them.

Chatting to a local vanilla farmer. I discovered the vanilla here sells for around 3 million rupiah a kilo which is €170!
The reason for the high price is the cultivation of vanilla is extremely labor-intensive. The plants themselves don't even start producing vanilla beans until after three years. When they finally do bloom, the flowers only stay open for one day and have to be carefully pollinated by hand within 12 hours of blooming.
When vanilla growers plant a vanilla tree (a species of orchid), it takes three years to obtain the first fruits. Also, unlike some spices that offer a good yield from the first year, vanilla takes its time, which justifies a higher price.
Lombok & Indonesia in general produces some of the best vanilla in the world.
