When you ar
rive at the airport or Lembar Harbour, a car will pick you up and take you on a two-and-a-half hour drive to the small town of Tetebatu in East Lombok. For accommodations, you stay overnight at Wisma Soedjono, which is one of the best resorts around the Tetebatu village. Food and drink are available at the hotel restaurant, and in the evening you are invited to watch the traditional Sasak dance
Second Day: Pelawangan Tetebatu
After a light breakfast and another blessing from the god, we proceed to Rinjani Trek Centre for the trek briefing. Our guide will explain the route in detail, and inform you of safety procedures. During the trek route, we pass through a rain forest rich in flora and fauna such as birds, edelweiss, peers pigs, and the long-tailed and grey macaque monkeys. If you are lucky, you can catch a glimpse of the rare black ebon leaf monkey, known locally as lutung. Your guide will tell you village stories and local legends, such as why banyan trees appear like someone standing with their legs apart (bunungengkang), and the mysterious stories of the jejurang dongaq telo and pondok momot nyamin. Rest stops are taken along the way, and lunch will be available at Post 2, Pengkla Mei’ Shelter (1500 M). After lunch, we continue the ascent for another couple of hours through jungle to Post 3. At Pondok Momot Nyamin or what some people called “penggu” (2000 M), there are breathtaking views across to Sumbawa on the eastern side of Lombok. Third Day: Pelewangan Tetebatu – Banok Tetebatu
After an early coffee or tea, we continue the ascent for another couple of hours through grassy meadows to Belawangan Tetebatu, the crater rim at 2640 M above sea level. Below you is the Segara Anak Lake (2000 M), within the Rinjani crater and the small cone of Mount Baru Jari, which the local people called Gunung Baru (2,351 meters), an active volcano that last erupted dramatically in 1994. Enjoy the beautiful views of the lake, one of the most impressive while at the crater rim. After a great breakfast, the Pemangku will say traditional prayers and give offerings to the volcano before we take the two-and-a-half hour hike to the Post 3 camp area. We will continue our trip with a six hour hike on a remote trail through the jungle back to Banok Village. During our walk, there is the possibility of seeing even more wildlife through the pine-like casuarinas trees, locally known as cemara.
