‘MEGENG’ – a Ritual of Wulan Kapitu in Tengger Kalendar
Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park has been established as one of the most priority tourism destination since 2015. This thing made pros and cons among Paruman Dukun Pandita of Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park. Paruman Dukun Pandita of Bromo Tengger National Park is a community consist of the leader Buda Tengger’s Religion.
It is feared that the development of tourism will disrupt the preservation of nature and also the continuity of customs that have governed people's lives for years. Although in fact, the preservation of this custom is also one of the reasons tourists come to Tengger.
“We, the Tengger people, have inherited the attitudes of our ancestors, Rara Anteng and Joko Seger. Those who don't like argued with other people," said Satomo, Chief of the Pandita Tengger Shaman.
That is why according to the meeting agreement of Paruman Dukun Pandita of Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park on Sunday, 27th November 2022 in Pasuruan, that on Wulan Kapitu based on Tengger’s calendar accounting, Bromo National Park Area will be close in the opening and closing ritual of Wulan Kapitu (Megeng).
Wulan Kapitu or the seventh month in the Tengger Tribe Calendar, is considered by elders or community leaders as a sacred month. In this month, the people of the Tengger Tribe carry out the mutih fasting practice for a full month. That is, they will only consume foods such as mineral water, white rice, without any flavoring ingredients. “Megeng is the ritual that is carried out to restrain worldly behavior or traits and get closer to God," added the Chairperson of the Probolinggo Regency PHDI.
The opening of Megeng ritual will be on Friday, 23rd December 2022 at 06:00 PM until Saturday, 24th December 2022 at 06:00 PM. While, the closing of Megeng ritual will be on Saturday, 21st January 2023 06:00 PM until Sunday, 22nd January 2023 06:00 PM.
During this ritual, the visitors is limited. Such as Probolinggo Regency limited in Cemara Lawang, Pasuruan Regency limited in Pakis Binjil, also Malang and Lumajang Regency limited in Jemplang. For tourist destination that cannot be visited include Mount Bromo, Sand Sea, Savana and Mentigen.
