The UN Climate Change Conference, or COP27, is being held from November 6-18, 2022, in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt. This year’s conference includes the ocean as a major topic in the discussions, underlining the fact that the ocean is a fundamental part of the climate system as well as the global response to climate change.

On December 7 - 19, 2022 in Montreal, Canada, governments from around the world will come together for the UN Biodiversity Conference, or COP 15, to agree on a new set of goals to guide global action through 2030 to halt and reverse nature loss.

To further highlight the role of the oceans and its protection amidst these global forums, CTC, in collaboration with the Coral Triangle Initiative Regional Secretariat and The Nature Conservancy, aim to shine a spotlight on actions undertaken by women leaders across the region towards climate action, and marine protected area management linked to the global goal to protect 30% of the world’s oceans by 2030.

Join us this Friday, for our second online learning exchange and virtual exchange entitled: Coral Triangle Women Leaders Kickstarting Climate Action and Ocean Protection Towards the 30 x 30 Goal.

"Women are an integral part of the fisheries sector and their communities, especially in the Asia-Pacific region. Despite this fact, their work and labor continue to remain invisible despite various efforts to advocate for recognition."

More than 59 million people were engaged in the primary sector of capture fisheries and aquaculture, about 14% of them are women. Overall, women play a crucial role throughout the fish value chain, providing labour in both commercial and artisanal fisheries. While the role of women and minorities in the management and utilization of natural resources is generally acknowledged, their role does not carry the same recognition as that of men.

To better address gender and inclusion issues, the UNDP/GEF/PEMSEA Arafura and Timor Seas Ecosystem Action 2 (ATSEA-2) Program and UNDP’s Global Marine Commodities (GMC) project, we would like to invite you to a Webinar on Mainstreaming Gender and Social Inclusion in Fishery and Marine Sector in the Arafura and Timor Seas Region. The online event will be on June 10 at 9:00am to 11:30am (Jakarta time).
