We did amazing things in these 3 days. It's not easy to do activities in the forest during the rainy season! But, the rainy season is mean fruit season. It will be easier to meet many wild animals. Besides orangutans, birds are also on the list. We saw at least 72 species of birds here. During night trekking, with the help of night vision we met several types of nocturnal animals.
And on the second day, we met 3 Tapanuli orangutans. Good news, one of the adult females is pregnant. It looks like she will give birth to a baby orangutan in a few months.

Undescribed plants discovered
The Tismia plant is a type of flora that is quite unique. Usually, this plant is known for its ability to adapt to harsh environments. Tismia is often found in tropical forests and tends to live as a saprophytic plant, which means it gets its nutrients from decaying organic matter. Although not very prominent, the Tismia flower has an interesting shape and colorful colors, making it an interesting object of study for botanists. The Tismia plant is a rare genus of plants belonging to the Burmanniaceae family. This plant is famous for its unusual nature and unique shape. Here is a detailed explanation of Tismia:

1. Physical Characteristics
Tismia is a small plant without chlorophyll, so it does not photosynthesize like green plants in general. Instead, Tismia lives as a saprophytic or mycotrophic plant, getting its nutrients through a symbiotic relationship with fungi. This plant has very small stems and leaves, even the leaves are often just small scales on the stem. Its striking flowers are bell-shaped or tubular in bright colors, such as white, orange, and purple, often decorated with striking patterns.

2. Habitat
Tismia is usually found in humid tropical forests, such as in Southeast Asia, including Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand. It grows in soil rich in organic matter, usually under a dense forest canopy, where sunlight is minimal.

3. Unique Adaptations
Because it does not have chlorophyll, Tismia relies on mycorrhizal fungi that live in its roots to absorb nutrients from decaying organic matter in the soil. This lifestyle makes Tismia very dependent on the surrounding ecosystem. If its habitat is disturbed, the survival of this plant is threatened.

4. Reproduction
This plant produces flowers that function to attract insects as pollinators. The shape and color of the flowers help attract small insects that are attracted to the nectar or protection offered by the flowers.

5. Scientific Significance
Tismia is often the subject of research in botany, especially in the study of mycorrhizal symbiosis and the evolution of non-photosynthetic plants. This plant is also indicators of the health forest ecosystem.

After 2 days 1 night at Batang Gadis National Park

We found Helmet orchid in Batang Gadis National Park-North sumatra. Located right on the edge of the lake. This is just one of the special ones and there are many more exotic plants that what we found here.
