Swimming through the depths as Homaloptera orthogoniata, I invite you to join me on a remarkable journey through the rivers of Sarawak and Kalimantan. My name, rooted in Greek, reflects the unique features that define me – flat fins and straight angles, symbols of my adaptability in the currents. From the Sungai Baram to the Sungai Mahakam, I gracefully navigate these waters, marking my presence in the rich biodiversity of Borneo. Picture the swift-flowing streams, where gravel and rocks create a mosaic of shelter. Amidst the biofilm and algae, I thrive, grazing on microorganisms that sustain me in this aquatic paradise. My Max size At 13 cm, I find my comfort in temperatures between 20 and 25.5 °C, with water pH ranging from 6.0 to 7.5 and hardness from 18 to 179 ppm. Notably, I can be distinguished by my distinctive markings – three large, saddle-shaped patterns adorning my dorsal surface, accompanied by a dark brown base of my caudal fin. Though not aggressive, my specific needs make me selective in choosing tankmates, ensuring harmony in our underwater world. Dive into my aquatic realm as we unravel the secrets of my existence!

The King Koopa Nerite Snail, also known by its scientific name Neritina juttingae, is a uniquely shaped freshwater to brackish water snail, highly sought after by aquascape enthusiasts worldwide.

While it thrives in freshwater, this snail requires seawater or at least brackish water for reproduction. In Kalimantan, it's commonly found clinging to submerged wood or along riverbanks with access to the sea.

Considered the super saiyan version of the Algae Eater snail, it can even munch on the toughest algae and even Ketapang leaves 🤣.

Its distinct shape earned it the nickname "durian snail" due to its resemblance to the durian fruit, although some variations lack spikes. The cause remains unknown.

Unlike other Neritina species, Neritina juttingae prefers staying fully submerged. However, it's not recommended to keep them in Blackwater as it can cause shell erosion. Another unique trait is its habit of carrying eggs in its shell, visible in the first photo. Consequently, compared to other snails, it tends to have fewer eggs due to its Type K reproduction.

The Mini Samurai Gurami Fish!
True enthusiasts of Indonesian fish surely know this fish, how could they not? This fish is the prima donna of native Indonesian ornamental fish.
With the scientific name Sphaerichthys vaillanti a.k.a Samurai Gurami, this fish is highly renowned among ornamental fish enthusiasts abroad.

In the world of fish, this fish is a morphological anomaly where the females have much more beautiful colors than the males. Yes, this fish exhibits sexual dimorphism, where males and females have different and striking morphologies. Females have bright Green-red colors while males have pale colors, namely brown-white.

In addition to its striking colors, this fish also follows a paternal-mouthbreeding system. This means that the male incubates the eggs in its mouth for approximately 20 days, and during the incubation process, the male is guarded by the Alpha Female.

This unique fish is only found in West Kalimantan, where I reside.
Are there any other native Kalimantan fish that you would like to know about?

Merchandise FFOI "Telmatherina celebensis" International Edition

The exotic species originating from the ancient lakes of Sulawesi is truly a marvel, renowned globally for its breathtaking beauty. Ironically, it is more widely recognized by the international community than by the majority of Indonesians. Capturing a photograph of this fish requires an extraordinary effort, as obtaining images of both males and females is nearly impossible.

The Telmatherina celebensis species serves as a symbol of the hidden beauty that represents the beloved but often overlooked eastern part of Indonesia on the world stage.

Believe that by purchasing FFOI merchandise, you are conveying a message to the world, revealing the existence and vulnerability of Indonesia's native fish.

Nandus nebulosus (Gray, 1835) or Borneo leaf fish

I still don't know the local name for this fish in Kalimantan even though I often encounter it. Anyone know?

This fish boasts an incredibly unique appearance resembling a leaf with distinct marbled brown patterns.

Here are some details I've gathered from meristic measurements of this fish: The dorsal fin has 14 hard rays and 12 soft rays, the pectoral fin has 12 soft rays, the pelvic fin has 1 hard ray and 5 soft rays, and the a**l fin has 3 hard rays and 6 soft rays (Reference Kottelat; Nandus nebulosus has 14-16 hard rays and 11-12 soft rays in the dorsal fin, and 3 hard rays and 5-6 soft rays in the a**l fin). It has 39 lateral scales.

It has an elongated, flattened body with a width-to-length ratio in front of the a**l fin at 0.3899:1. The mouth shape features equal upper and lower jaw lengths (terminal) that can be extended (extensible jaw), and a truncate caudal fin. The head is triangular in shape with a ratio of head length: head width: head height: inter-eye width: postorbital head length at 3.842:2.141:2.696:1. The body has a light brown base color with brown-white marbling and a "

Currently, the Freshwater Fish of Indonesia ( Ikan Air Tawar Indonesia )community on Facebook has a mission to transform into a foundation that is dedicated to the collection of data on the native fish biodiversity of Indonesia through Citizen Ichthyologists all over the country. The community is currently in the process of completing the creation of a website that will document fish species, their distribution, and the current conditions of their habitats.

One of our efforts involves fundraising through the sale of FFOI merchandise. Through this Facebook Group, we have confirmed the discovery of three new fish species and several new records. The main focus of the foundation includes:

- Establishing a comprehensive database of native fish biodiversity across Indonesia.
- Publishing scientific journals.
- Organizing fish expeditions.
- Hosting educational fish webinars.

With the assistance of fellow enthusiasts of Indonesia's native fish, my team and I hope to turn our movement into a reality.

12/05/2023

The Borneo Shark (Carcharhinus borneensis) is a highly rare species that seemed to disappear when first described by Pieter Bleeker in 1858. Pieter discovered this species in Singkawang, a city famous for its vibrant China town atmosphere. It is uncertain whether Pieter ever visited Rusen Singkawang while enjoying Choi Pan, but who knows?

As a native of West Kalimantan, I'm curious about this shark species because it is only found in coastal waters. After being considered extinct, the Borneo Shark was rediscovered in Malaysia, specifically in the Sarawak region, which is located in the northern part of Borneo Island. This raises new hope that Carcharias borneensis may still be found in West Kalimantan, albeit unrecorded. I suspect that this shark can still be found along the Sambas coast, which has relatively safer waters.

Will anyone find it alive in the future? Hopefully, there will be more research on sharks and rays in Kalimantan, particularly in Indonesia, to unveil the presence of this elusive fish.

10/05/2023

Indonesia has 1240 native freshwater and brackish water fish species, an incredible mega-biodiversity in the world of fisheries. Sadly, most Indonesians are unaware of these species and how vulnerable they are in nature.

Just last Saturday, I visited one of my favorite fishing spots in the peat water, searching for species like Parosphromenus anjunganensis and Sphaerichthys oshpromenoides. However, to my surprise, I couldn't find any of my target species and only caught one type of fish, Trigonopoma pauciperforata. This was odd because this location always had an abundance of fish during the dry season.

Upon investigation, I discovered that the front of the waterway was dredged deeper, while the back of the channel was used for truck transportation into the forest. This resulted in increased water depth and stronger currents upstream, making it difficult for passive fish to survive and causing them to be swept away. Downstream, the waterway was filled in, causing movement restrictions, limited food sources, and changes in ecological conditions.

This destruction of habitats is happening in many places where land use change is encroaching on fish habitats in Kalimantan and throughout Indonesia. Unfortunately, re-evaluation of the status of Indonesia's fish species and their level of endangerment has not yet been carried out. However, I believe that most of the 1240 species are endangered or critically endangered.

To address this issue, I am trying to reintroduce Indonesia's native fish species through my social media page "Freshwater Fish of Indonesia." Although this is a small step, other fish enthusiasts who share the same passion have also taken action to introduce and protect fish in their regions.

Unfortunately, fish protection in Indonesia tends to stagnate, and even individuals, communities, and other relevant parties tend to interpret fish conservation as simply releasing fish into nature. However, sometimes the fish released are invasive species, such as tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus), Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), carp (Cyprinus carpio), African catfish (Clarias gariepinus), and betta fish released in non-native habitats in Sulawesi and Java. In truth, releasing fish back into the wild requires expert academic study of fish distribution and the ecological niche of the water body. It's complicated, yes, and that's just how complex our environment works.

To address this issue, I believe that we need to re-evaluate and collect data on all of Indonesia's native fish species, study their behavior and breeding activity, and breed them in captivity. Finally, each region must have a safe zone for each habitat type to ensure their survival. However, I am not entirely confident that the latter is possible because development will ultimately encroach on their habitats unless they are legally protected.

I hope that more people will become concerned about Indonesia's native fish species.

27/03/2023

The waterfall in Borneo is a magnificent sight to behold. With its thundering roar and misty spray, it is a true wonder of nature. But the beauty of the waterfall extends far beyond its surface, as the biodiversity of water plants and fishes beneath the water is truly remarkable.

Beneath the surface of the waterfall, a plethora of aquatic life can be found. The clear, cool waters of the waterfall provide a perfect habitat for a wide variety of water plants.

But the biodiversity of the waterfall's underwater world extends far beyond fish and plants. The ecosystem is home to a plethora of other aquatic creatures, including crustaceans, mollusks, and insects. These tiny creatures play a vital role in the ecosystem, serving as a food source for larger fish and helping to keep the underwater world in balance.
