"My Trip to Kawa Village with Flores Traveler
We feel so fortunate to have visited Kawa Village with Flores Traveler. It was like stepping back in time- this traditional village purchased on a Ridgeline with 2 large volcanoes as a backdrop.
The villagers are kind, funny, and very sincere. They very rarely have foreign visitors, I think only one or two times before us, so it did not feel like something on the tourist circuit. A very authentic experience. It is very isolated and you wouldn't think you were in Flores when looking at the landscape. On our second day we hiked around for a few hours, to another traditional village who were also very kind and welcoming.

Upon arriving at Kawa Village the lead elder welcomed us and blessed us. We stayed one night, Christmas Eve, and stayed at the elders house. They cooked our meals with ingredients from their land. It is so quiet and comfortable, we all slept very well.

If you have a chance to visit, do not miss the opportunity. It was a serene, heart-filling time. I also cannot recommend our guide Irwin enough, he is a genuinely wonderful person and just wants his guests to have the best time possible. Very highly recommend!"

"The welcoming ceremony from the head of the Kawa village was a wonderful indication of how we would be embraced like family for the weekend we spent there. We were told that once we performed the ceremony we would be welcome there any time we returned and no longer would be outsiders. After the welcome we were brought inside a traditional house that not only showed amazing craftsmanship but also had a huge central room where all could sit, chat, eat and eventually spend a quiet night sleeping surrounded by stars and sounds from the local animals".

Weaving is already a common activity found in ethnic communities in Flores. The weavers can easily be seen in traditional villages doing their weaving in front of their house and sometimes is also seen under the house just like in whose house has 5 levels with a meter distance from the ground inteded for their pets, storage, and weaving. However, seeing them weaving from natural dyes is a rare experience. In Bena traditional village, Bajawa we've seen some women does this with their excellent work rate attempting to preserve the weaving heritage passed down from their elders or ancestors. Look at this black hand obtained from indigo.

Bena Village, one of the oldest traditional villages in Flores that still preserves the tradition on house construction with a communal work by working together to renovate on of the houses that is expected to be ready for "reba" thanksgiving ceremony in upcoming day on December 27.

Riung District, located north of Bajawa, is famous for its beautiful coral. The coast and the area around the city of Riung has become a national conservation area, even given national park status and named Pulau Tujuh Belas (Seventeen Islands). This national park consists of more than 20 small and large islands. However, the local community calls it Riung Seventeen Islands, a name that is easy to remember because it refers to Indonesia’s Independence Day on August 17th.

Our trip to Wae Rebo started from Labuan Bajo through the south coast, Labuan Bajo-Lembor-Nangalili-Dintor-Denge.

Enjoy every moment of the journey to the village hidden in the mountain including the stops at stunning places along the road till to be officially welcomed by the elders of Wae Rebo.

Thanks to our tour guide Yon Hochu and driver Antonius Antonny who have made this happened.
