This particular left has a long, wide open line up, but surfers these days tend to pack together and sit in the same comfortable spot. But this wave has a section that I call the Cobra Peak where you can often get a great barrel well before the pack, and if you pick the right one you can thread it all the way past them for more goodness down the line, just like this ripper has done here.

This wave is not a secret, though it's often uncrowded or empty due to the extra fuel it takes to get there and the fact that it obviously isn't for everyone. My partner always tells me to NOT say stuff like "January is like surfing n the Mentawais 30 years ago." But it sure as heck looks like it on this day, with fun, playful waves and NO ONE else around.

Sessions like this are not at all uncommon this time of year. In fact, after an already decent run of swell that's show in this video here, we've recently had a couple BUMPER swells sending waves up to triple-overhead to spots like Macaronis, Rifles, Lance's Right (HTs), and many others for the second half of the month. And, again, there are very few, if any, other surfers around to share them with.

With only a few exceptions, most of the spots in this video are in the Mentawais and are NOT secrets. However, they are spots that are far less frequently visited. Sometimes this is because other charter operators don't feel like traveling a bit further to surf alone. Sometimes, it's because a more famous "magazine" wave is nearby. Sometimes, it's because most charter operators don't have 25+ years of experience and know how to read the subtleties in the surf and weather forecast or how to read the patterns and preferences of the other boats. And, sometimes, YES, we surf waves that we would consider "secrets" that we guard very closely.

Whatever the reason(s), we try very hard to get our guests quality waves with just their mates. We work with you to find the right lineups for your skills and desires, and more often than not we end up surfing alone or with just a few other people.

From my end (the booking end), surfers from New Zealand are almost always an extreme pleasure to deal with. They are always fun and polite, making the whole process much smoother and easier to deal with. As a result, the Karma Gods tend to reward the Kiwis with excellent conditions. Based on the footage our resident guide/photo Grant Davis sent me, himself a Gizzy native, it looks like this trip was no exception.

As you can see, even in the peak season month of July, Grant could still score the guys plenty of rippable lineups to themselves. It's always possible to find empty lineups if you have the knowledge and the guests are willing to travel away from the pack to surf alone. Those of you who have seen the original September Sessions movie already know how good the waves can get this month. As a result, September is practically part of the peak season these days. However, with a little bit of knowledge and willingness to get off the beaten path, you can still score great waves and empty lineups this time of year. And while these guys aren't pulling quite the maneuvers that Momentum Crew did, they have every bit as much fun. Probably more!

This video goes back over 20 years ago when Dave "Sumo" Keagy and his mates scored PUMING waves on a February trip to the Mentawais. I don't even remember what the "revenge" part was about anymore, but I DO remember that they scored ridiculous surf with basically no one around. Here is just SOME of the footage from an amazing day at Lance's Right (HTs) that shows even in in the WAY off season, you can definitely score epic surf.
