Great relaxing experience in Bali

"Zen Resort is run by a community of dedicated and friendly staff who work to make your stay memorable. The food was excellent and healthy and changed each day. The treatments were amazing, relaxing, and unique experiences. Many I had never heard of or experienced. The morning meditation and yoga were a great way to structure the day and add to the experience. The heat was intense at times but there was a beautiful pool and the villa plunge pool was nice to cool off."

10th December 2024, International Human Rights Day

The Imperative for Deliverance of Universal Human Rights in a World at Crossroads

Today, we commemorate the 76th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). This moment calls for reflection, a moment of silence, and a renewed commitment to uphold human rights not merely as aspirational ideals but as fundamental principles that guide our actions and interactions in every facet of our lives.

I was born on October 12, 1945, just 40 days after the end of the Second World War—a time when humanity was beginning to mend the scars of conflict and sow the seeds of hope for a compassionate future. The adoption of the UDHR in 1948 marked a pivotal moment in our collective journey, a declaration that every human being, irrespective of race, creed, or circumstance, deserves dignity, freedom, and opportunity.

Yet here we stand, 76 years later, confronted by a disheartening reality: the promises enshrined in the UDHR remain unfulfilled. The years 2023-2024 have revealed themselves as some of the darkest in recent memory, marked by escalating violence, deepening inequalities, and an environmental crisis that threatens the very fabric of life on Earth.

The term "human existential threat" has surfaced to describe not only the looming danger of nuclear conflict but also the rapid advancements in artificial intelligence and the relentless climate crisis. We find ourselves at a crossroads, and we must ask: What will it take to genuinely embrace and deliver human rights in a world seemingly spiralling into chaos, violence, and conflict?

Reflecting on my own journey—initiated in a world devastated by war and buoyed by the optimism of technological progress—I recall the late 1960s. During my Cambridge postgraduate research, I collaborated with Joseph Atary on a pioneering modelling and analytical Control System Design of the Complete Nuclear Power Plant MZFR Prototype in Karlsruhe. Whilst recognized the promise of nuclear energy as a solution to the global energy crisis, sadly as time passed, we witnessed the tarnishing of that promise by the rise of nuclear weapons and the overshadowing of peaceful development by the spectre of destruction.

J Atary and M Shah, Modelling and Analytical Control System Design of a Nuclear Power Plant Prototype, https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1474667017685392

My professional career, spanning 1972 to 2012, cantered on the urgent need for sustainable development. A moment of clarity emerged in 2002: “There can be no sustainable development without humanity learning to live sustainably—with each other and with nature.” This understanding led me in 2005 to establish Zen Resort Bali, a sanctuary dedicated to holistic wellness where individuals could reconnect with their true selves, restore their wellbeing, and embrace wisdom to live in harmony with the world around us. Globally, policymakers have often focused on "greening the environment," yet the greater challenge lies within the very essence of humanity. Our challenges are outcomes of human actions; thus, the priority must be to "green the people."

Zen Resort Bali Vision and Mission of Wellness and Sustainable Tourism Development
https://youtu.be/E6R8RUeLSK0

The current model of development—one that glorifies materialism, power, waste, and exploitative over-consumption—is both unsustainable and unjust. Wealthy nations have historically contributed disproportionately to global and regional crises. We can no longer ignore the fact that climate change disproportionately impacts populations in the Global South, exacerbating inequalities, displacing communities, and increasing suffering.

At the core of our inequitable and unjust world are three pressing issues:

1. Dehumanization of Others: The age-old scourge of prejudice, discrimination, and violence continues to fracture societies across the globe. From Europe to the Middle East and Asia, Africa to Latin America, wars and conflicts are direct violations of the human rights we pledged to uphold. We must confront this disregard for human dignity and act decisively.
2. Destruction of Nature: The degradation of our planet is an urgent reality. Climate change, biodiversity loss, deforestation, and pollution are not abstract threats; they are crises that jeopardize the survival of all living beings. We are pushing our planet to the brink, and if we do not act now, the balance that sustains life will collapse.
3. Threats of Technology: The industrial revolution widened the chasm between rich and poor and caused environmental degradation. Today, we find ourselves in the midst of an AI technology revolution that, if left unchecked, will exacerbate inequities and ignite conflicts on political, economic, environmental, and social fronts.

These three issues—human inequality, environmental degradation, and the technological divide—are deeply intertwined. We cannot address one without considering the others. Our only hope lies in uniting as a global community, driven by compassion, respect, and a shared responsibility for our planet.

Countless individuals throughout history have left their homelands seeking better lives, yet today, we often turn a blind eye to those fleeing war, conflict, famine, and violence. This indifference is a betrayal of our shared humanity and a failure to uphold the promises of the UDHR.

However, there is hope. In the face of these challenges, a path forward exists, rooted in the power of international wellbeing tourism. Tourism possesses a unique ability to bridge divides, fostering connections among diverse cultures through respect and mutual understanding. It can illuminate the suffering and inequities that persist, particularly in developing nations, and inspire us to forge development partnerships that ensure dignity, opportunity, and a sustainable future for all.

Together, we can manifest a future where peace, progress, and prosperity are not distant dreams but collective realities. A future where we coexist harmoniously with one another and the natural world that sustains us. The time for action is now. The future rests in our hands. Let us honour the legacy of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and strive to ensure that the coming decades are ones of healing, unity, and sustainability.

As Nelson Mandela poignantly stated in London in 2005, “Massive poverty and obscene inequality are such terrible scourges of our times—times in which the world boasts breathtaking advances in science, technology, industry, and wealth accumulation—that they have to rank alongside slavery and apartheid as social evils.”

Let us rise to the challenge and make a difference, for the sake of humanity and the planet we call home. Food for Thought: International Tourism, Sustainable Development, Human Rights

What specific actions can individuals take to promote human rights today?
“We must as a matter of course accept diversity, migration and the value of different governance which are opposite to but in no way in opposition to ours...Migration is irreversible. Management is what matters. Education is critical in promoting the good life. Countries and institutions are obligated to inform the public and citizens of the rights of man. In those rights are tolerance, knowledge and beliefs...Individuals should be more discerning... Halston Clarke, https://www.quora.com/What-can-individuals-do-to-promote-human-rights-and-create-positive-change-in-the-world-Which-institutions-or-organizations-are-most-effective-in-this-effort?top_ans=1477743828215640

How can we address the relationship between technology and human rights violations?
“There is a growing recognition that regulation of artificial intelligence and other forms of technologies should be firmly rooted in the existing human rights framework and neither undermine nor replace existing human rights standards. Human rights conventions, as living breathing instruments were crafted to grow and respond to the developments of societies and their new challenges.... the human rights framework is well suited to the governance of risks to humans from technology and artificial intelligence”
https://www.scl.org/13067-human-rights-and-technology-the-harms-behind-the-hype/

What role does international tourism play in advancing sustainable development and human rights?
International Tourism has “the opportunity for making a positive impact on our planet via responsible travel practices like respecting cultural norms when traveling overseas and shopping from local businesses with respect for high standards. By interacting with locals, both parties get an open line of communication between different cultures that could lead toward greater understanding among people worldwide–hopefully having long-lasting effects towards peace between all nations no matter what race or ethnicity it is.”

"A Heartfelt Tribute to the ZEN Resort Bali", A Trip Advisor Review, 4 Dec 2024
Marglyd, Bernau am Chiemsee, Germany
Original Text in German

Exhausted and burned out, a recommendation led me to this magical place. What I was able to experience here in terms of Ayurvedic healing, warmth, support and spirituality is incomparable. A place of rest and healing.

After an empathetic conversation with Dr.Mahendra, an individual treatment plan was created for me, which was filled with the most wonderful treatments every day. Within 14 days I was allowed to experience 25 different treatments.

Loving rituals accompanied the holistic massages, but especially the two-hour open chakra massage with Ardani touched me deeply and will forever have a place in my heart.

The days began at sunrise with a meditative morning routine masterfully led by Ilu. Her unique blend of breathing exercises, gentle stretching, activating mini-cardio sessions and moments of silence allowed me to feel deep within myself. Afterwards I went to the rooftop for yoga sessions, which gave me a new flexibility and an unexpected sense of well-being within two weeks.

Culinarily, the ZEN Resort is also a revelation: Breakfast – like all meals – was a symbiosis of freshness, variety and attention to detail. Every meal was not just a treat, but a contribution to inner and outer healing. Body and soul find a harmony here that has a lasting effect.

Although I travelled alone, I immediately felt like I was in a big family. The loving atmosphere, spontaneous encounters and deep conversations with fellow travellers enriched my stay immensely. Small excursions included in the program also gave me the opportunity to get to know the beauty of the country and the warmth of its people. What I had the opportunity to experience here, I will integrate deeply into my life. Yoga in particular has opened up an inexhaustible source of power for me that I don’t want to miss anymore.

My special thanks go to: Dr. Mahendra, who created this unique place of healing, Ms Budiani, whose careful management makes the stay perfect, Ilu, who gave me a whole new love for this practice with her yoga sessions on sunrise and sunset, Ardani, who opened my heart chakra with her empathetic treatment so I could grieve and let go, Gede, whose artful flower decorations and towel arrangements have made every day special, and the wonderful fellow travellers who inspired, enriched and filled me with a lot of laughter: Gaby, Andy (Switzerland), Nee (London) Kathy & Leah (Melbourne), Anne (Germany), Noemi (Switzerland), Ursula (Switzerland), Sabine, Ulli, Lisa (Germany), Wendy & Cathrine (Tasmania), Abbey & Nicki (Sydney).

Last but not least, I would like to thank the entire team at ZEN Resort for making this place so magical, harmonious and unique. THANK YOU very much – I will be back! ❤️

The greatest challenge in the 21st century relates to the imperative of realising sustainable development in harmony, both regarding the world wealth of Nature diversity as we well as the wealth of human diversity.

His Majesty King Charles III CBA initiative recognizing the critical need of "Nature-First Economy", "Nature Business Positive"... is a defining moment to halt the degradation and destruction of Nature, lest we put at risk the life-supporting capacity of Planet Earth, the only place in the Universe thus far known to support life.

The Nature-positive sustainable development initiative also needs to incorporate a people centric approach, incorporating sustainable and responsible lifestyles in harmony with Nature

Beautiful resort, amazing staff, accommodations, yoga and Ayurvedic treatments - a special energy, entirely bliss !

Zen Resort is truly a little bit of paradise.. I had the most amazing time during my 8 days there. The Zen team are brilliant, so helpful and beautiful inside and out. The accommodation was very comfortable and beautifully maintained, gorgeous gardens, swimming pool, yoga shale and plenty of space to hang out with others or find your own space to chill. The food was delicious and loads of choices.
The yoga teacher Iloo (spl?) was brilliant and a fantastic guide for mediation and breath work. I had the most amazing ayurdevic treatments - all of the practitioners were brilliant and very experienced. There is a special energy there which allows you to go deep into your practice and on whatever you are working on. Overall it was blissful. Thank you so much to the Zen team for making my stay so special.

Try it once, you'll come back again, or never want to leave...

A great experience, unique and amazing. We never had experienced this elsewhere. We felt that the people, the surrounding and the spirit of that place, were made to please us. It was just perfect. We came for 2 weeks of relaxation, and it worked! We left really relaxed, our batteries charged... In fact, we didn't want to leave Zen anymore.

As it was the third time we spend some times at Zen resort, we felt like being a part of the Zen family. Friendliness, peacefulness, adapted therapy.

Mahendra Shah, a six-decade journey from the imperative of sustainable development to the essentials of living sustainable responsible lifestyles

Planet Earth is unique in being the only place in the Universe known thus far to support life. The root causes of most of the challenges, environmental, economic and social, we are facing worldwide are unsustainable human activities, primarily modern lifestyles driven by greed, power and waste

Whilst I personally spent a four-decade international career (University of Cambridge, University of Nairobi, IIASA, UN, World Bank etc) working on issues relevant to achieving the imperative of sustainable development in harmony with Nature, in 2002 I came to the awakening that there can be no sustainable development unless we Humans adopt sustainable and responsible lifestyles in harmony with one another and Nature. This lead me over the next two decades establishing Zen Resort Bali, a holistic wellness and sustainable development resort where our mission is to give guests experiences of holistic wellbeing, physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually, such that they embrace their wisdom and logic to live sustainably.

We at Zen dream of creating a worldwide network of similar resorts in rural and peri-urban settings to empower sustainable lifestyles tourism, which has the potential to be the largest sector in future global economy as being a means to enhancing respect for our world wealth of human diversity.

Let us embrace “Greening the people” as the pre-requisite to “Greening the Nature”
