Galungan is one of the most important holidays for the Balinese people. It is commemorated every 210 days and lasts for 10 days. It celebrates the triumph of Dharma (good) over Adharma (evil).

Festivities start on Hari Raya Galungan when the deities and ancestral spirits descending to Earth. It lasts for 10 days until the Kuningan celebration, which symbolizes the deities ascending back to the heavens again.

On Galungan, the ancestral spirits return to visit their former homes, and the Balinese are welcoming their ancestors through prayers and offerings in their homes. Hence why you will see temples and houses decorated with penjors (tall bamboo poles adorned with fruit, flowers and coconut leaves) and colourful features. Women carry fruits on their heads in baskets to provide as offerings; creating a truly spectacular scene, transforming the island into a festive, vibrant and bustling haven of activity.

Selamat Hari Raya Nyepi, the quietest day of the year in Bali. This is a special day where the Bali island shuts down for 24 hours and you rest, self-reflect, and start a fresh new year clearing all negativities. You cannot leave the house, work, or use electricity. The day of silence is to trick the malevolent spirits into believing there is no one left on the island, so they will pack up and leave. We wish you a peaceful Nyepi day and Caka New Year 1943.
