Tourists planning an upcoming visit to Bali are being reminded that the Bali Tourism Tax Levy is still in effect.

Introduced back in February 2024, the Tourism Tax Levy was created to help fund the protection of future natural landscapes and to help level up tourism services across the province.

The Bali Tourism Tax Levy is an IDR 150,000 mandatory fee for all tourists to pay when visiting the province.

While the fee is mandatory, as many as 60% of tourists have been failing to make the payment.

This is a fee specific to Bali Province; tourists visiting other top destinations across Indonesia are not required to make the contribution.

Since its introduction in February, leaders have been struggling to ensure that all tourists entering the province make their payments before they leave.

A series of public awareness campaigns were introduced, and the Bali Tourism Office worked with hotels and tour providers to make it as easy as possible for tourists to make their IDR 150,000 contribution. However, travelers were still slipping through the net.

In the months that followed, the Bali Tourism Office started conducting spot checks at the entrance to major cultural attractions such as Tanah Lot Temple or Uluwatu Temple.

A dedicated Tourism Task Force, accompanied by their adorable Kintamani puppies to serve as tourist friends, were deployed to conduct informal spot checks on tourists as they entered and exited famous landmarks.

While there is no fine or set punishment for not paying the fee, it is written into law that all eligible tourists visiting Bali must make the tax payment before departing the province.

Leaders have suggested fines could be introduced in the future to help incentivize more tourists to obey the rules.

Over the last few months, while the high seasons were in full swing, the Bali Tourism Office had not released as many updates regarding the Bali Tourism Tax Levy.

However, spot checks are still being carried out across Bali’s top attractions, and tourists are being reminded to not only ensure they have paid their fee before they start exploring the island but also to have the QR-Code voucher saved on their phone for easy access in the event that they are stopped by the Tourism Task Force.

If tourists are not able to present proof of their payment and the QR-code voucher, they will be asked to pay the fee on the spot, by credit or debit card. No Tourism Tax Levy payments are to be received in cash.

In an update shared on Instagram, the Bali Tourism Office confirmed that spot checks have been completed at Ulun Danu Bertatan and the surrounding tourism destinations in Bedugul.

Tourism Task Force Officers were accompanied by officers from the Bali Civil Police Service (Satpol PP) and the Head of the Bali Tourism Office, Tjok Bagus Pemayun, himself.

The Bali Tourism Office shared, “Tjokorda Bagus Pemayun conveyed that until now [the Bali Tourism Office] has collected funds IDR 211.8 billion, but only about 40% of tourists pay.

“Restrictions such as the absence of auto scanners at airports are said to be one of the root causes of payment realization.”

The spot checks were conducted on 4th September, and more are expected throughout the area in the coming week.

Tourists may see signs communicating the Levy Voucher Check Point, and all officers will be wearing branded Bali Tourism Office uniforms or Tourism Task Force ranger uniforms.

Bali tourists are reminded that there is only one official website to make the Bali Tourism Tax Levy payment, and that is https://lovebali.baliprov.go.id/ – this page does not load if the browser is using an ad-blocker VPN.
