From Pak Kung Au is the shortest route you can take. Take an MTR to Tung Chung and then the 3M Bus. Ask the driver to stop off at Pak Kung Au. From there, you’ll be by the trail that goes up to Lantau Peak. Now, depending what pace you go, you can get to the top from anywhere between 1-2.5 hours. The trail is essentially uphill so be prepared to sweat a little, especially with the humidity of Hong Kong.

Continuing on along the trail, it contours along the ridge toward east. Part of the sections are quite steep but not too strenuous. Overlooking toward its summit, it is admirable for the grandeur of the broad form of the hill range and the undulated sprawling ridge. Looking back down, the ridge seems to be the back of a hude dinosaur stretching out to the ground. Moreover, the small green rounded hills are like the sea wave surging up. After climbing up several hillsides, it comes to the crest of the hill where there is a range pole. But the highest point is at the hill ahead. Further along the trail down and then up, it leads to the hilltop. Looking around there, it offers the splendid full view. Overlooking northward, Shenzhen of China from the western Shekou to the eastern Sha Tau Kok is within the sight. Gazing to the southeast, the mountain of Tai To Yan is horizontally lying as a large wide screen. Toward the southwest, Pak Heung and Kam Tin could be seen in the distance

Continue on along the Lantau Trail. Passing through the junction of Wong Lung Hang Country Trail on the right and heading forward, the stone chalets distributed on the ridge could be seen. It is interesting that the cabins seem to be orderly built on each small hillsides. Head the trail upwards through the gentle slope. Beyond L014 of the roadsign, take the side path on the right at the fork that leads to the hilltop of Sunset Peak. It is narrow, rough and overgrown with weeds in part that winds along the hillside. Up to the upland, go ahead then arrive the summit.

Looking around at the hilltop, you could see the aeroplanes taking off and landing below your horison. Moreover, it offers a panoramic views over Tung Chung, northwards far to Tuen Mun and Castal Peak, southwards to the coastline of Cheung Sha, and Shek P*k Reservior like a big mirror on the ground reflectling sunlight up into your eyes. Sometimes sea of clouds could be seen below you. In additions, it also attracts some peoples for enjoying the sunrise there. Lantau Peak has two summits which secondary peak is adjacent from and slightly lower than the main peak. Moreover, there is a recession between the two peaks known as Lantau Gate. If looking the peaks from a distant place, the top seems to be broken a bit, so that Lantau Peak was named as Broken Head Hill in Chinese. The english name “Lantau” also came from the pronouncing in chinese.

Head the trail, it undulates gently up towards the ridge. Looking to the south, D'Aguilar Peak is towering alone on the peninsula. At highest crest, you are enclosed among the splendid scenery. Shek O, Big Wave Bay, opposite coast of Peninsula of Clear Water Bay and even Pacific Ocean as far as the eye can see, all come into full view at the lookout pavilion. Afterward, follow the trail downhill, it soon deviates from the ridge according to the signpost toward the left. After the descent, it joins Hong Kong Trail then follows it to the right to Tai Tam Gap.
