On behalf of the people of Dooega and Mweelin we wish to convey our deepest sympathies to Luca's family on his tragic death.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Luca’s parents Fidelma and Darren, his brothers Ciaran, Cody, Rhys and Dean, his grandmother and the extended Callaghan and Moran families, Luca's friends and neighbours at this heartbreaking time.

"The Wren, the Wren the king of all birds, St Stephen's day was caught in the furze" 🐦🐦🐦. Wren Day, Day of the Wren or Lá an Dreoilín as Gaeilge is a unique tradition in Ireland that is practiced on December 26th, St Stephen's day. Children and sometimes even adults dress up with straw costumes or old clothing becoming "Wren boys" who then hunt a fake wren bird tied to a pole.

Wren Boys also parade through the towns and villages, dancing, playing music and going house to house collecting money to "bury the wren".
While the tradition is not practiced as much anymore it still persists into modern times in certain parts of Ireland particularly in the West of Ireland.

We had a cast of 17 children.... Mary, Joseph, the angel Gabriel, 2 innkeepers, a star, 3 shepards, 3 wise men, 3 camels, a donkey and a sheep!🌌🫅🏼👼🏻🐑🫏🐫🌠

🌟It was a very special night✨🕯️
Thanks to all who read reflections, said prayers, all who sang in the choir and to everyone in our wonderful community who came out to celebrate this festive night in our church🕯️🎄⛪🎄🕯️

✝️ We are saddened to hear of the death of Michael McCarthy, Meelin Road, Dooega, one of the elder members of our community. Our deepest sympathies to all his family, particularly his nephew Micheál Kilbane, our treasurer.

Michael Martin McCarthy,

Meelin Road, Dooega West, Achill (17th December 2024) - in his 93rd year, at the Mayo Hospice, Castlebar following a short illness.

Predeceased by his parents Michael and Bridget, sisters Ellen McCarthy and Mary Kilbane (Dooega).

Sadly missed by his sister Anne Reilly (Edinburgh, Scotland), nephews and nieces, friends and neighbours.

Reposing at Sweeney’s Funeral Home, Achill Sound (F28 HN81) on Thursday from 4.30 with removal at 6.00pm to Dooega Church arriving at 6.30pm.

Funeral Mass on Friday at 12.00 noon followed by cremation at Lakeland Crematorium, Cavan at 5.00pm.

House Private please.

Family Flowers only.

What a fabulous start to our Féile Dú Éige weekend....even though the weather wasn't great, community spirits were high!!💚

Happy Taylor Weekend!!💃🏼 Keep your eyes peeled👀 around Dooega over the next few days.... We've been told Taylor wants to explore our beautiful corner of Achill once she finishes her concerts in the big shmoke!! Here is a quick clip of her telling our good friend Martin McDonagh about how she wants to "go to there"! Martin set up here at Féile Dú Éige headquarters for 4 months back in 2021 whilst filming "The Banshees Of Inisherin" I wonder would she stick around for our festival? 🤔 Taylor, will you buy a duck for The Duck Race?!🦆🦆🦆

🇮🇪💚 We had a great day on Sunday taking part in the postponed St Patrick's Day Parade in Achill Sound! 🙌🛻We had great Dooega representation in the parade. Our contingent was led out by Michael Lavelle and Charlie Mulhern in Michael's classic Ford Capri. Next came our Féile float with Matt, Yvonne, Donnchadh and Rían. Walking behind were Kevin and Zack, Edwin and Séimí, Sarah and Kevin and Marian and Claire. 🚜They were followed by the winners for Best Float, our Dooega Drama Group contingent led by award winning actor Eoin Murphy in his Massey with Siobhan Molloy, Toirlach Dever, Aisling Masterson and Caroline Mangan in the currach, reprising The Cripple of Inishmaan. Bringing up the rear was Stuart of Achill Oral Histories in his classic VW Beetle. Well done also to our local children who took part in the parade with Sáile NS. 👏Well done to all who participated in a wonderful parade and thanks to the large crowd who turned out. Thanks to all the organisers for their tireless work. Particular thanks to Matt, Kevin, Cian and all who helped prepare the Féile float.
