The Luan Gallery at night! This building was built by William Smith of Athlone Woollen Mills in 1897, as a temperance hall. He hoped that providing a Centre offering recreational facilities and a cafe would offer a good alternative to the pubs! It later was used as a venue for theatrical and concert performances, later serving as the Shannon Cinema and Savoy Cimema. In 1947, the building was handed over to the local authority, where it was used as a town hall and library.

Our town walks commence outside Athlone Castle and each walk lasts roughly one-hour walking at a leisurely pace. This can, of course, vary slightly depending on: weather; levels of fitness and/or the amount of questions you, or your fellow participants ask! Athlone is a town which straddles two parishes, two dioceses; two counties and two provinces. It has a rich military history, a fascinating religious history and lots of interesting literary and cultural highlights to keep you entertained. Join us and let Athlone Walking Tours take you back through a millennium of rich history and culture.
