Depending on where you live, tomorrow is a day that has a few different names. Known by Christians as The Feast of the Epiphany or the 12th Day of Christmas, here in Ireland it is also known as “Nollaig na mBan'' or "Women’s Christmas".

Tomorrow, 6th January, marks the end of the Christmas season and along with the 25th and 26th, Nollaig na mBan is an important day in the Christmas Calendar. Traditionally it was the day where Irish women, who had worked tirelessly for weeks to create a magical Christmas for their families, had the day to themselves - the men would take over cooking, cleaning and looking after children for the day! This left the women of the house free to socialise and let their hair down after a busy few weeks. Typically women would gather in each other's homes to eat cake, drink tea, chat and most importantly, rest after a busy Christmas.

In some communities in rural Ireland, the night before the 6th, known as Oíche Nolliag na mBan, the woman of the house lit 12 candles in the window. In the days before electricity, it must have been quite a sight, " the brightest night of the year" .
Nollaig na mBan was also the Christian feast day that marked the arrival of the Three (Magi) Kings in Bethlehem with their gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Churches and Christian homes that had a crib, The Feast of the Epiphany would see the three kings added to the display…But in many Irish houses, the Three Kings wouldn't be there for long! The 6th was also traditionally the day where Christmas was packed away for another year. When holly and ivy were the traditional decoration in Irish homes, they were taken down and burnt in the fire on the 6th.

We love this Paul Henry (11 April 1877 - 24 August 1958) painting that depicts women hard at work. We really hope all the women of Achill and women everywhere, enjoy their well deserved “Nollaig na mBan” after entertaining, catering and caring for their families all over the busy Christmas season…

Located along the River Moy, Rosserk Abbey is a compact friary of the Third Order Franciscans, founded around 1440 by a member of the Joyce family. It is just 4km from Killala, County Mayo.

The friary has been in ruins since the Suppression of the Monasteries by King Henry VIII, around 1540, but remains well preserved. Visitors can view the finely carved west doorway, single-aisle church and unique double piscina.

Keem Bay from above! At the western end of Achill Island, is one of the most picturesque bays in Ireland. It is accessible by road over a twisting clifftop route on the side of Croaghaun mountain. Keem Bay is virtually uninhabited (the only building is a former coastguard station) and provides a peaceful and magnificent retreat from the 21st century ☘

The village of Dugort situated at foot of Slievemore mountain in the heart of the Wild Atlantic Way, Achill Island typifies the raw wilderness of the Atlantic coastline....soaring cliffs, windswept beaches, rich heritage and deserted boglands.

The perfect antidote to urban life ☘

Keem, as its recent best-beach accolade affirms, is just perfect as it is. Yet still there are misguided attempts to improve upon its beauty
