Built Heritage Investment Scheme 2019
&
Historic Structures Fund 2019

Roscommon County Council in conjunction with the Department of Culture, Heritage & the Gaeltacht are inviting applications for the “Built Heritage Investment Scheme 2019” and the “Historic Structures Fund 2019”.

The Built Heritage Investment Scheme seeks to leverage private capital for investment in labour-intensive, small-scale conservation projects and to support the employment of skilled and experienced conservation professionals, craftspeople and tradespersons in the repair of the historic built environment.

The primary focus of the Historic Structures Fund is on caring for and restoring historic structures and buildings for the benefit of communities and the public. The core aims of this fund are to: enable larger scale conservation works to be carried out on heritage structures which are deemed to be significant and in need of urgent support; encourage the regeneration and reuse of heritage properties and to help to secure the preservation of protected structures and/or historic-culturally significant assets and support the investment of private capital in labour-intensive projects to conserve historic structures in public and private ownership for community use.

Eligibility for both:
• Structures must be included in the Record of Protected Structures
• Structures in Architectural Conservation Areas where exceptional circumstances are deemed to apply.
All applications shall be marked “Built Heritage Investment Scheme 2019” or “Historic Structures Fund 2019”, as appropriate and submitted before 5.00p.m. on Thursday 31st January 2019, to Heritage Office, Roscommon County Council, Áras an Chontae, Roscommon, Co Roscommon F42 VR98 or emailed to [email protected]

More information and Application Forms are available on http://www.roscommoncoco.ie/en/Services/Community/Heritage/Heritage/Built-Heritage-Investment-Scheme-2019-Historic-Structures-Fund-2019/
or by contacting the Heritage Office on 090 6637106, or emailing [email protected]

If you are unsure which scheme to apply for, you may apply for both schemes and we’ll see which scheme has the best chance of success for you.

Halloween is almost us! The annual celebration, marking the transition between the brighter days of the year and the dark, is a tradition that we can trace back to the customs of Gaelic Ireland.
The festival of Samhain is said to be a ‘liminal’ time, when the boundary lines between the realms of the living and the dead begin to blur. In nearby Rathcroghan it is said that Oweynagat, ‘the Cave of the Cats’ is a gateway to the Gaelic underworld, populated by frightening beings such as the Formorians of Irish Mythology.
Halloween continues to appeal to our fascination with ghosts, spirits and other ethereal beings, something that has not changed since the time of ancient Ireland.
Visit the Rathcroghan Visitor Centre to find out even more about Oweynagat, Gaelic Ireland, and its deep connection with Irish Mythology.

Great news! Ballaghaderreen's own Lung/Lough Gara Way is part of the longer Beara-Breifne Way, charting the path taken by Donal Cam O'Sullivan Beare, Gaelic prince, during his northward march, evading English troops who were pursuing him after the collapse of the Irish resistance at the end of the Nine Year's War, 1593-1603.

An additional €2 million provided nationally for the Walks Scheme in Budget 2019, will benefit the Beara-Breifne Way, walking/cycling route from Co. Cork to Co. Cavan through east Galway and Roscommon, which is a fantastic new tourism product for this region.

Work is ongoing at present to progress the walkway locally. I will be working closely with Minister Michael Ring to ensure that the Beara Breifne Way can benefit fully from this additional funding to support landowners in this region.
