In Ireland's mythology did you know that Queen Maeve of Connacht was not only married 5 times and ruled for 60 years, but motivated by jealousy she propelled her army towards Ulster to seize a prize bull there in the Cattle Raid of Cooley saga? It is less known that a Cattle Raid of Mayo - Táin Bó Flidhais - also exists. More info: bit.ly/2FMETOw

"Anois teacht an earraigh beidh an lá ag dul chun síneadh..." Happy first day of Spring everyone! Many years ago now, great Kiltimagh-born poet Raifteirí said that Spring brought his thoughts to putting '[a] foot down in the heart of County Mayo'. 😃 Let's dream ahead for this year!

'Cill Aodáin'
Anois teacht an earraigh beidh an lá ag dul chun síneadh,
Is tar éis na féil Bríde ardóidh mé mo sheol.
Ó chuir mé I mo cheann é ní chónóidh me choíche
Go seasfaidh mé síos i lár Chondae Mhaigh Eo.

Now here is the coming of Spring and the day will be going towards a lengthening/And after St. Bridget's Day, I'll lift up my sail./Since I got it into my head, I won't be able to rest/Until I put my foot down in the heart of County Mayo. (By Antaine Raifteirí, 1784-1835)

‘This is where the spook started’

Ahead of the season of all things spooky, we will be sharing some Samhain customs and traditions which have inspired much of the modern Hallowe’en celebrations we still enjoy today.

Here is number 3 of 10: Scary lanterns

Candles were placed in windows. Carved turnips were popular for turning into scary lanterns for walking with or placing in windowsills. The pumpkin that is prevalent today is an American development of this idea.

Learn more about Samhain traditions in the exhibition galleries of the National Museum of Ireland – Country Life, Castlebar, Co. Mayo.
