📣We can finally reveal our big news! Together with our colleagues at Mayo Dark Skies, we have successfully secured a bid to host the 2025 Artificial Light at Night Conference (ALAN2025), an international and multi-disciplinary conference attracting academics, architects, astronomers, conservationists, dark sky advocates, ecologists, engineers, lighting experts, planners, policy makers, scientists, students and more.

✨The event will take place in Westport 28-30 October 2025, immediately preceding the Mayo Dark Sky Festival and encouraging delegates to stay on and enjoy the Mayo hospitality a little longer!

🔭We’re delighted to bring the event to Ireland and look forward to working with our partners and local groups on the conference. We have a lot of work ahead of us and a chance to get Light Right in the meantime. Our Strategic Plan 2023-2027 Launch Event on Oct 6th at Blackrock Castle Observatory will be a great opportunity to learn more about ALAN 2025 - email [email protected] for more info.

Dark Sky Ireland were incredibly saddened to hear of the passing of Bob Mizen earlier this year as the stars have now lost one of their greatest friends on planet Earth.

The article below, in the most recent edition of the ILP Lighting Journal, is a beautifully written tribute to Bob.

Rest in Peace Bob, we know that the stars will shine just that little bit brighter now that you are among them 🌟

If you would like to read more on the life and passing of Bob, please follow this link to the tribute from the International Dark-Sky Association here👇

A star-filled sky is one of the most magical sights in the natural world. But light pollution is obscuring our view of the stars and disrupting wildlife.
Together, we can work towards rewilding our skies for the benefit of people and wildlife. The CPRE The countryside charity is organising a Star Count in the UK and across Ireland so we can submit useful Citizen Science data for Ireland.
Please help Dark Sky Ireland to create a baseline of information on our skies across the island of Ireland by taking part in - a cosmic census of our view of the stars.
Just look to the sky on a clear night between 17-24 February, and count the number of stars you can see within the four corners of the Orion constellation.
Find out how to take part 👇

The first ever launch from the UK is happening tonight. Technically it's a Virgin aeroplane that will launch around 22.40 tonight from Cornwall and it has been modified to carry a rocket that will launch from the plane around 23.45 as it flies over the sea just south of Ireland. It's possible for anyone in the blue area to see it for up to one minute after it's launched so Kerry and Cork have the best chance. Look south around 23.45 and up to a few minutes after in case times change. There will be a live broadcast starting at 22.20 on YouTube for anyone who wants to watch. I'll post a link in the comments.
