⚠️At some stage today while a tour was underway at the lighthouse someone entered and stole a ship in a bottle used in our story telling at the lighthouse, it is a one off item made specifically for Blacksod lighthouse and is very distinctive. We would ask whoever took it to please return it as soon as possible and we also ask our followers to please let us know if you happen to see it online being offered for sale.⚠️ See picture below ⏬️⏬️

If you notice small fires dotting the landscape of County Mayo tomorrow evening, don't be alarmed.

We haven't just won the All Ireland ... not yet! Instead, it's the ancient tradition of Bonfire Night, or St John's Eve, 23rd June, and the bonfire holds a special ceremonial place in the celebrations.

Deeply rooted in Irish folklore, St John's Eve marks the transition to Midsummer and coincides with the feast of John the Baptist.

In the west of Ireland, and predominantly in Mayo, bonfires were lit to signal the approach of the harvest. This ritual served as a form of cleansing, and torches lit from these flames were carried through the fields, flourishing with crops. The community gathered as night fell, singing, dancing and celebrating the coming harvest. Groups would compete to build the biggest and best bonfire, a rivalry which still burns strong today!

There are many customs and practices surrounding St John's Eve, such as jumping the flames for luck, burning weeds to prevent overgrowth, and scattering the ashes on arable land to protect the crop. Families would bring the embers to their hearth to protect their houses and all who dwelled inside. Many of these practises were fertility related, with single girls jumping the fire to increase their chances of finding a husband and engaged couples to ensure their match would last. After the flames died and the embers were raked, livestock was often driven through for the same luck and yield.

The term 'bonfire' likely stems from the practice of burning bones, another cleansing ritual. In fact, bones burn steadily and the ashes make a fine fertiliser. Children would play with fire on St Johns Eve, dipping sods in paraffin and throwing them high in the air like makeshift fireworks.

St John's Eve even has its own traditional dishes. "Goody" was a dish made from bread soaked in sweet milky tea, served only around this summer season. I remember fondly my grandmother Mary McHale preparing Goody for my brother and I in Bury Street, Ballina, in the early 1970s! Delicious 😋💭🍵

In 1905, artist Jack Butler Yeats and writer John Millington Synge were dispatched by their employer The Guardian (or the Manchester Guardian at the time), to witness the spectacle for themselves, resulting in images (like the one below ) of Bonfire night in Belmullet. The sight of these fires, little and large, illuminating the night sky left a lasting impression on the pair!

So if you notice a small garden fire, a white cloud of plumes or a billow of smoke from behind a barn, don't worry. Instead, join your neighbour, jump over the flames and enjoy the unique celebrations. County Mayo is among the last strongholds of these very ancient traditions which have all but died out elsewhere.
