Interesting fact about the actual Shamrock plant

In case you hadn't heard, tomorrow is St Patrick's Day when we will all be wearing Shamrock... but what exactly is Shamrock and which of the plants that bear trifoliate leaves is the 'real' Shamrock. Well ... in order to try to resolve the question of which was the actual, authentic and valid species, the National Botanic Gardens in Dublin carried out a survey, not once but twice, in 1888 and 1983. All across Ireland, people were asked to send in plants of what they considered to be Shamrock. The plants were grown on and when the flowers emerged a couple of months later, a count was taken. The surveys were a century apart, but there were only very small differences between them. About half of the specimens turned out to be Lesser Trefoil with White Clover a close second. Down the list came Red Clover, Black Medick and even Wood-sorrel was considered by some of those who participated in the second survey. If any one of these species were to be unique to Ireland, there might have been a reason to think of it as our Shamrock. There is no clear winner, our ‘Seamair óg’, or young clover, will still be worn proudly on St Patrick’s Day, will still be ‘drowned’ - a euphemism for toasting our national saint - regardless of what species it is, and will continue to be our national emblem. (Excerpt from : 'Blooming Marvellous - A Wildflower Hunter's Year') Picture from left on top : Lesser Trefoil, Black Medick, White Clover and Red Clover. Below: Wood-sorrel.

Saint Patrick's arrival to bring Christianity to Ireland occurred approximately 600 years before the Normans arrived at the request of the Irish King of Leinster, Dermot MacMurrough. The first 30 Knights led by Robert Fitz Stephen arrived into Bannow Bay in Wexford in 1169 with 60 men wearing mail and 300 foot-archers from among the military elite of Wales.
