Inishkea is an island paradise on a day like today 🏝😍

These white sand beaches are world class, and I've lived in Bermuda!

Thanks to everyone who made today special, from the happy travellers on the boat, to skipper Sean Keane and Mick of Blacksod Sea Safari. The new addition to the fleet is cool and comfortable, smooth sailing!

Fancy a quick trip to the islands this week? Get in touch to combine a Blacksod Village tour with a few relaxing hours on the abandoned islands!

It's certainly not a day to be hiding away indoors 😍💭🏝

Blacksod Pier is heaving with tourists and sightseers and Mick from Blacksod Sea Safari has launched his new boat in style! A wildlife safari is perfect for all ages, interesting and exciting, and we got up close to Irelands tallest seacliffs too, they're 3 times higher than the Cliffs of Moher!

The kids enjoyed their turn at the wheel, especially Aaron aged 6 😊

I'm off to Inishkea now...photos to follow! To book a really great guided tour, give me a call on 087 1837283 or PM me!

*** EVENT ANNOUNCEMENT ***

After the 'meteoric' popularity of our previous event, we at Erris at Night in association with are delighted to announce our next get together... a Dawn Chorus Stroll!

⁉️ Have you ever experienced the shrill thrill of bird song at dawn?

⁉️ Have you heard the myriad voices of our native birds (and the summer visitors to our shores) as they defend their patch and look for love?

Dawn Chorus is an excellent opportunity to get up, get out and join the birds just as the morning light begins to break!

Join us in Blacksod Village at the little red boat for a morning stroll like no other! It's a great excuse to spend some time in nature and watch the sun rise with neighbours amd friends.

We will be joined on the morning by enthusiast Derek Charles and expert Dave Sudaby of Bird Watch Ireland to help us navigate the different voices, habitats and calls of our feathered friends.

This event is accessible, family friendly and free to enjoy. Bring your children and dogs and who knows, maybe even your reluctant teenagers!

About Dave:

Dave is responsible for overseeing Reserves work across the country, principally in advising and managing land under our ownership. He also participates in other projects, including those related to breeding waders, seabirds and wintering birds. He is based out at the Mayo Office on the Belmullet Peninsula and joined BirdWatch Ireland in 2001 to lead and deliver on a LIFE-Nature funded project based at the Termoncarragh Lake SPA. This has resulted in the successful restoration of Annagh Marsh Reserve and the ultimate return of breeding Red-necked Phalaropes. Before joining BirdWatch Ireland Dave worked on a variety of projects linked with seabird research and monitoring, and wetland ecological management for breeding waders.

We're very much looking forward to this event. We recommend warm clothes, good boots and hot drinks. Download the Merlin Bird ID App on your phone in advance of this event, its an incredible resource!

So get to bed early on Saturday night and see you in the wee small hours in Blacksod! 😊

Elizabeth and I had a really great tour of award-winning The Connacht Distillery today courtesy of CFO Milo Molloy! The distillery sells more than artisinal whiskey, gin, vodka and poitín, it sells its own story in a fascinating and compelling way.

We talked all about the challenges we face, as businesses running guided tours in the west of Ireland, and the rewards we both get from bringing stories to life for our guests. Thanks Milo, we are looking forward to working together soon 😉

The visit was extra special as Connaught Distillery is in the very same building as my families bakery used to be. I worked here as plant manager for around 15 years and haven't been inside the building since! The smell of fermentation brought me right back! Lovely to see they remember us with a spot called "Duffys Corner" in the bar 😊

This statue of Grace O'Malley also known as Granuaile and by her Irish name Grainne Ni Mhaille appeared in Newport Co.Mayo last January. This incredible work is by the supremely talented artist Mark Rode Sculpture from Killasser, Co.Mayo.Granuaile known as the Pirate Queen of Ireland and one of the most famous pirates of all time.

From the age of eleven, Grace forged a career in seafaring and piracy. She was fearless and commanded respect from her crew. But her influence didn't stop there. Grace was a savvy negotiator and brokered deals with other leaders in Ireland. She was a fierce leader at sea and a shrewd politician on land.

In 1593, after hearing about her brother and sons' arrest, O'Malley petitioned the Crown for their release and set sail for England and up the river Thames in London. She was granted an audience with Queen Elizabeth I at Greenwich Palace and the two elderly, experienced women sat down as leaders in what was perceived to be a man's world.

Even before the meeting, the Tudor court had long been aware of, and intrigued by, Grace O'Malley. And it's no wonder why. She was a force to be reckoned with and challenged the traditional gender roles of her time.

After her husband’s death, Grace allegedly took the shipwrecked son of a Wexford sailor as her lover. Tragically, the relationship was a brief one after Hugh de Lacy was killed by the MacMahons of Ballyvoy.

Seeking vengeance, Grace attacked the MacMahon castle of Doona in Blacksod Bay and ruthlessly killed Hugh’s murderers on Cahir Island.

Her attack on Doona Castle earned her the nickname, 'Dark Lady of Doona'.

But it wasn't just her leadership skills that made her famous. O'Malley was also known for her daring exploits on the high seas. She commanded a fleet of ships and was feared by many. Her story is one of adventure, bravery, and resilience. She defied societal norms and became a legend in her own time. Hear the full story of this mighty Mayo woman, her connection to Blacksod Bay and much more on a really great tour.💚❤️

It was a very busy weekend in Blacksod with plenty of tourists enjoying the sights. This cheerful group took my village tour on Sunday and, even though half of them live in Erris, they learned a lot about history and heard the real stories of Blacksod!

We stopped along the way for a spot of birdwatching (as Derek is an enthusiastic birder) and to admire the vernacular gate of the old lighthouse keepers cottages. We talked about the various conservation efforts and invasive species, we discussed the quarry, and the group were fascinated by tales of the All Red Route!

Blacksod is full of interesting facts and traditional intricacies and an hour tour can sometimes turn into two!

I'm busy in Ballina this week and guiding on the Inishkea Islands on Saturday but have a spot free on Sunday 6th. Give me a call to arrange a really great tour for your family or friends this Mayo Day weekend!

Running a business on the Mullet Peninsula here in Co.Mayo takes a certain amount of consideration. It's a special area of conservation due in part to the machair and sand dunes eco systems which line the shores. That's why our beaches are so beautiful and the scenery is so breathtaking!

But... and there's always a but...

Being an environmentally responsible business is not a trend. It's a genuine way of life. Working with conservation groups, ecotourism businesses and concerned citizens to promote and encourage responsible tourism is an every day job. Being eco friendly is not about having a recyclable coffee cup on offer for your customers. It's about what happens to the cup AFTER use, its about the choice of coffee served (fair-trade? ethically sourced?), the customers options when disposing of it and so many other considerations!

As a destination in a very rural part of the west of Ireland, Belmullet isn't serviced by any train. There is a bus service (which I often use myself) but most visitors arrive by car. Although we can't necessarily affect that journey, we can make it easier once travellers get here by offering tourist friendly bus journeys, allowing the cars to stay at the hotels and reducing the impact on our rural roads.
Of course, this frees up parking spaces for locals who enjoy the amenities every day, regardless of the season.

Bus tours are efficient, cost effective, and a flexible way to visit the area. They can even foster a sense of community amongst strangers, adding to the overall experience! Tourists love to chat and make their own connections. Bus tours are a perfect low impact response to visiting such environmentally sensitive areas as the Mullet!

Sales is sales, whether its a fresh loaf of bread or a fun guided tour.

Tourists crave connection, it helps them understand a new area, to ask questions and to unpack the history, culture and folklore.

Guided tours reach people in a way information boards can not, helping them understand the intricacies of the world and making them feel part of the narrative.

Human connections and personal experience are what makes my tours really great!

Call me to check availability, this week is booking up fast!

I have a couple of spots free on Friday and Saturday, and what better way to spend a sunny hour or two than with a guided stroll around Blacksod Village, or further afield...

I'm looking forward to a new North Coast tour I have been developing. It follows the old All Red Route, from Ballina Railway Station to Blacksod, taking in the monastries of the Moy, Killala, Ballycastle, Downpatrick, Céide Fields, the 4 lighthouses of Erris and ending in Blacksod Village where the terminal was to ferry passengers off to Canada, the US and elsewhere across the world. With added interactive stops along the way, the excursion is perfect for school groups, TY, active retirement groups, tourists and locals alike. Fully customisable, low impact, and fun-filled!

Why not let someone else drive while you enjoy all that North Mayo has to offer in comfort. Get in touch for more information and All Red Route availability. It's going to be a really great tour 😉💭☎️

Street art is always a brilliant addition to any village, and especially art that tells the stories of our history, heritage, flora and fauna and the things that make an area special.

For my peninsula tours this will be a regular stop now, combining the stories of St Brendan the Navigator, guided by the celestial Plough, and all the unnamed monsters that lived in the unmapped seas beneath! More accessible than a boring information board and much more beautiful.

Looking forward to seeing the results once this (and the other one 😉) are finished. The Mullet Peninsula in the sunshine is like nowhere else in the world!

There was a really great atmosphere in Blacksod today with lots of happy tourists, dog walkers, vintage tractors and cool cars about!

Guess what this lovely family from Blanchardstown, Dublin, said was their favourite part of their Blacksod Village tour today?

The tale of Tom McClean, a brave adventurer, who rowed solo across the wild Atlantic Ocean in a 14ft dory boat in 1969 and straight into the safety of Blacksod Bay. But even after 70 days at sea, his face was smooth and clean shaven 🤔

We had a really great tour today with the Erasmus+ Program students of Realschule Hoechsradt, all the way from Höchsradt, Bavaria! The lucky school is twinned with Davitt College Castlebar!

After consultation with facilitators Mr. William Rowan and Baverian teacher Tanya, I developed a 3 hour bus tour of the stunning Mullet Peninsula to suit their schedule and their interests. Taking in the four lighthouses of Erris, Dún na mBó, Blacksod Villiage, Deirbhles Twist and Well, and the ancient church at Falmore, I kept 30 teenagers and their leaders busy and smiling with history, geography, conservation, martime tales, geology, Gaeltacht life and even a spot of foraging! The students most enjoyed the interactive nature of our best sites and being immersed in the wild Erris weather!

Afterwards, the young group insisted on a visit to Belmullet Tidal Pool Shore Road after following the famous pool on Instagram! Look out for tags from posing German students 😆

Thanks to Tanya and Co. for a really great day. I'm looking forward to taking the teachers out again in the future!

Thanks are also due to Iorras Domhnann - Belmullet Tourist Office for all their help and support. A rising tide floats all boats!

I'll be at Unas in Blacksod tomorrow, Saturday 13th at 12 noon. Join me for a Blacksod Village tour!

Or call me (0871837283) to chat about what type of tour suits you and your guests best. I cater to groups big and small. Regardless of the plan we devise together I promise it will be really great!

Some of you eagle-eyed followers spotted me and my partner on the BBC last night!

We were delighted to have a TV crew at one of our monthly Erris at Night events, an extra special solar eclipse watch party!

The people of Erris deserve a clap on the back. They showed up at Cross Abbey and stood around for hours IN THE RAIN just to show their support and the result is the lovely tribute to the Mullet Peninsula posted here by Mayo North Tourism, Ireland - the driving force that connected us to BBC. 06/04/2024

While in Belmullet yesterday, handing out leaflets, hanging posters and talking to Erris Veterinary Clinic about my cat Céide (he is originally from Ballycastle 😆), I noticed the new Aire de Service at the docks.

As a campervanner, I appreciate any camper services, especially these covered manholes designed for human waste (aka Elsan Points).
Campervanners were restricted as there were previously no Elsans in the whole Erris area!

However... this service is controversial for a number of reasons; the road leading to the docks may not be suitable for vehicles over 6m, traffic conditions are dangerous at this turn, there is a shortage of parking in town already, the docks area is home to the funfair and the Elsan point may impede it, etc. The Aire is not for overnighting, just servicing the onboard toilet.

In my ecotourism designation we learned the average campervanner injects over €100 A DAY into the local economy. So each van is worth a lot to the businesses in town. But I don't live in town and no doubt there are other problems I haven't considered.

We regularly have campervans overnight in Blacksod, I've stayed there myself. Sometimes there are 10 vans there, with no facilities! I always wonder why the council don't charge a little fee to each van and use the profits to install an Elsan Point here, tidy up the area and remove those two unsightly rotting tanks by the pier. Blacksod is an end-of-the-line destination for anyone travelling along the WAW. By rights, Blacksod should be a Wild Atlantic Way discovery point!

In my experience, campervanners are happy to pay a little to stay somewhere so beautiful.

What do you think?

"Severe damaging winds" - simply not something you want to accompany you on a nice leisurely walking tour 😆

Therefore... my first weekend has been officially washed out! Never fear, I have plenty of networking to do and a million posters to put up in town instead.

Get in touch to book a tour anytime next week!

So far I've taken bookings from:

🚎 A bus tour of foreign students on an Erasmus Plus program, staying in Castlebar, who would like to know a little about the Erris area

⛵️ A family of 6 on an extra special adventure! Together we tailored a day out to suit their needs, a walk, a talk, a boat trip and even some fishing. Something to keep every member of the family entertained!

🏝 A group of work colleagues wishing to relax, decompress and team build in one of the most spectacular places in Mayo, the Inishkea Islands! I'll be joining them for the day, guiding through Blacksod Village first and around the abandoned islands.

Many other enquiries have come in about recommended routes and stop offs from Ballina and Dublin. I'll be talking more about what I think constitutes the most epic day out on the North Coast of Mayo later, suffice to say there are hidden gems and there are REALLY hidden gems!

I'd like to say a huge THANK YOU to Edel from Wild Atlantic Way for all her support. Starting from scratch is never easy but the support I've received is incredible!

Stay safe in and I'll be back at Unas at 11am on Monday 😊

It might not be the best weekend for walking tours weather-wise, but it's still a really great time to show off my new really great poster 😆

I've been busy making connections, seeking feedback and developing my ideas into actual plans! After a lengthy consultation with Iorras Domhnann - Belmullet Tourist Office , we identified a couple of things that seem to crop up again and again with visiting tourists. There are a few plans already put into action and a few wheels already spinning... you'll have to wait until we're ready to announce 😉💭🎡

If Storm Kathleen arrives early tomorrow we might have to postpone our first really great tours. If not, grab your best weatherproof jacket, slap on your west of Ireland waterproof smile and meet me there!

Meanwhile, I really appreciate your likes, follows and especially your shares! One share on Facebook can expose a new small business like mine to over 1,000 new clients, followers and friends! I appreciate every one 😊

Look out for my posters around town! Let me know if you'd like a poster or set of flyers for your noticeboard, business or workplace. I'm happy to deliver!

I had a really great day today with my final exam done and dusted!

2 years ago I started a diploma in Irish through the National University of Ireland NUI Galway , meeting in Áras Inis Gluaire, Belmullet every week to study comprehension, writing skills and conversation. The course was thoroughly enjoyable and I will miss the comradery with my classmates!

Learning the language makes working in the Gaeltacht a lot more interesting. Irish place names are vividly descriptive and inform us of so much, they enrich the connection between us, our ancestors and the land. One simple example is Sliabh Mór, the big mountain we see behind Blacksod Lighthouse. Sliabh Mór literally means big mountain. Sometimes language does exactly what it says on the tin 😆

If you have cúpla focal to use, labhair Gaeilge liom! On these tours we can take the time to talk as Gaeilge; to each other and to the community of Blacksod Village we may encounter along the way.

I hope to see you on Friday at 11am for a really great tour!

It was lovely to meet Red again this year at Blacksod Pier! I took Red and family from Dublin on the lighthouse tour in summer 2023 and they just couldn't resist coming back for more 😆

The village is a hive of activity at this time of year. I met tourists from Belfast, day trippers from Meath, a couple from Derry on a coastal drive, an Indian family living in Limerick on a Wild Atlantic Way jaunt and more! Blacksod Sea Safari were busy readying their boats for the season after news of the new pontoon in Dugort in Achill which will strengthen the connection between the two coastal regions. Gemma from Irish Whale and Dolphin Group was dolphin-watching and many lucky dogs were being walked! I also had a chat with Hannah from Léim Siar Bed and Breakfast about how we can work together to accommodate the volume of eager tourists expected in 2024!

I'm delighted to be flexible enough to give tours without any booking whatsoever. Get in touch via WhatsApp or look for me on the Pier, you might just get a really great tour 😉

I'm blown away by the really great response to my new page really great tours ! Thank you all for your support, likes, follows, shares and, of course, your early bookings! I've got a feeling it's going to be a busy summer 😉

A little about me: I was born and raised on Station Road in Ballina. Some of you might know my family, of Duffys Bakery, AKA Knutty Krust 😆💭🍞 My first time in Erris was as a kid, riding in a bread delivery van! After graduating from University in London, I ran my own café in Ballina for over 10 years, managed the expansion of a donut franchise in Bermuda and worked under a Michelin Star Chef in London. Leaving the baking trade to go travelling, I met my partner, bought a campervan and the rest is history! We travelled the length and breadth of Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales, visiting the tourist attractions big and small and marvelling at what our island has to offer to tourists. We Irish don't tend to shout about our homeland enough!

Settling in Erris in 2018, I began leading tours of Blacksod Lighthouse, Blacksod Village and the Inishkea Islands, learning the local lore and history of this incredible area. I set up and run a community conservation group called Erris at Night which meets monthly to celebrate and protect our valuable Dark Skies and educates about the ill effects of light pollution. Training in ecotourism, Gaeilge, Dark Skies and sustainability, I'm so enthusiastic about encouraging sustainable tourism to our area in a more meaningful manner. Tourism is all about experiences, about hearing the stories of the past and considering how they may inform the future.

Erris is a tight-knit community of passionate people who are proud of their little corner of the country. We have a wealth of rare flora and fauna, epic views and world class beaches here. We have lots to offer, in history, heritage, wildlife and, of course, the Irish language you'll find spoken locally. We have Wild Nephin National Park, the Dark Skies designation, many lighthouses, a thriving maritime trade and even our own bumblebee. I'm excited to bring dedicated, accessible tours of Erris to suit all groups and ages. The feedback from my guided tours is fantastic, people connect more with an area through guided interpretation and can have all their questions answered directly. I can facilitate young and old, visitors with reduced mobility, schools, families and much more!

I can't wait to meet you all this summer. My tours are for everyone, local, national and international.

Whether bird watching, whale watching, history loving, surfing, golfing, walking, island-hopping, relaxing or simply looking for a new way to spend the day, really great tours is open for business!

Let's take a look around together!
