For over 50 years Finnualla Scott and her husband Declan travelled the road from Co Cork to Co Mayo and crossed Clew Bay to Clare Island for their holidays.

Together, with their children in the early years, they would walk the roads and visit so many homes, having tea and porter cake with homemade butter, wonderful chats and laughs, before going out for dinner in the evenings and greeting visitors to the island with a welcome. It’s hard to define what a local is, however after 50 plus years of summer visits, being part of so many occasions and knowing so many of our past generation and being friends with so many of the current generation, it is fair to say that we have lost one of our own.

Finnualla, may you rest in peace from all your friends and family in Clare Island.

Achill Island, with its stunning landscapes and close-knit community, is making a big push for sustainability with its "Waste Free Wednesday" campaign. Led by Marjorie O’Malley from Achill Island Sea Salt and the The Salt Dock in Bunnacurry, this initiative tackles one of the most common waste problems: single-use coffee cups.

"I just got so frustrated with the number of single-use coffee cups on the island, thousands every summer including our own in Salt Dock," said Marjorie O'Malley. Determined to make a change, she applied for support from Mayo County Council under their waste reduction grant aid. The council backed the design and print of promotional posters. "Most of us have cups but they remain firmly in our kitchen presses, so this is a nudge to use them," Marjorie added.

𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐁𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭

The initiative has seen massive support from local businesses, creating a strong network aimed at reducing waste. Achill Island Sea Salt, with a helping hand from Mayo County Council, is leading the way by offering a 25-cent discount on any hot drink at the Salt Dock for customers who bring their own cups. This simple but effective incentive encourages both locals and visitors to adopt more sustainable habits.

𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐁𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬

A total of 26 businesses across Achill Island are on board with the Waste Free Wednesday campaign. This includes cafes, restaurants, and other establishments spread across the island, from Dugort to Keem. The full list of participating businesses is featured on the promotional poster and includes:

The issue of single-use waste is not just an Achill Island problem; it's a global issue. The sheer volume of disposable coffee cups contributes massively to landfill waste, as these cups are often lined with plastic, making them difficult to recycle. Initiatives like Waste Free Wednesday highlight the importance of community action in tackling environmental issues. By encouraging people to bring their own cups, Achill Island sets an example for other communities to follow.

Globally, there are plenty of success stories of similar initiatives. In Freiburg, Germany, the "Freiburg Cup" program incentivizes the use of reusable cups, significantly reducing the city's coffee cup waste. In the UK, several major coffee chains offer discounts to customers who bring their own cups, which has seen a positive response from environmentally conscious consumers.

Every reusable cup brought out of the kitchen and into the cafes is a step towards a cleaner, greener future.
