ceiling room of huge proportions - 85 feet x 45 feet with a fireplace at one end and an aga cooker at other end. The conservatory is the same size, with just 3 feet between it and the water. We have uninterrupted views of Carlingford Lough and the mountains. The Private Pier can be used as a swimming platform or as a mooring. There is also an enclosed garden.

The ruins of Carlingford Castle harbor an 'eerie presence' sometimes felt by visitors. Having promised his daughter to Richard de Burgo, a fellow Anglo-Norman noble, Hugh de Lacy was outraged to discover that the girl had fallen in love with de Whyte, the Knight of Ballug Castle, situated south of Carlingford. De Burgo was outraged. He imprisoned and tortured the unfortunate de Whyte who died in the castle. De Lacy's daughter, the grieving lover, knew nothing of the truth and then married De Burgo.The dead suitor did not rest easy. His ghost took to walking up from the torture chamber, along the corridors and up and down the turret steps. Lady De Burgo eventually discovered her husband's role in the murder and left him.

Our Story

Wood Quay is unique, Not only because it is a beautiful house, sensitively restored, but it is in the harbour, literally surrounded on three sides by water, yet it is also right in the middle of Carlingford village. An ideal venue for weekends, for family parties, conferences, meetings, etc. The house was built in 1840. It has been magnificently restored, using exclusively salvage materials. The main room is a gracious, high ceiling room of huge proportions - 85 feet x 45 feet with a fireplace at one end and an aga cooker at other end. The conservatory is the same size, with just 3 feet between it and the water. We have uninterrupted views of Carlingford Lough and the mountains. Heaven!
