Happy to announce the return of hens to Fernwood Farm ❤️ They’ve settled in so well and are laying up a storm. They roam on half an acre of woodland and pasture and are tucked up nicely in the at night. You’ll find farm fresh eggs in each cabin and all the surplus for sale at the farm gate. As Lainey said “happy hens, happy eggs”!!!

As we start to think about autumn I definitely feel it’s when the sauna/plunge pool experience comes into its own. The water in the river fed plunge pool becomes colder and the low setting autumn sun casts a really special glow on proceedings… can you spot Joey our ginger cat enjoying the view?!

Hard to say and it’s something I give a lot of thought too! The lush green everywhere you cast your eye, warm lake water, garden abundance. However I think autumn and spring are my absolute favourites and do not ask me to choose between them 🙃

1 May : Bealtaine meaning bright fire. The lighting of the Bealtine fire is one of Ireland’s oldest traditions and brought to mind this special evening sat around a fire with some of the serious craftsmen celebrating their stellar work on the Sauna and Stilt House.

A little homage to our beloved ‘Climbing Tree’ for the weeks that’s in it . A week that we planted 450 native Irish trees to add to our existing 20 acres of native woodland. Also happy to say that our woodland trails now extend all the way to our ‘Climbing Tree’. It’s a mighty oak where we have whiled away many afternoon with kids, cats and dogs! Our preferred lockdown picnic spot… In short, it’s safe to say, we 💚 trees, especially this one!!!

I’m taking a little time today to reflect on 2022, a pretty epic year here at Fernwood. We raised 12 setter pups, launched The Stilt House, Sauna House, Roundstone Quay Cottage, our rope bridge and further developed our wonderful woodland trails.. However, I think our biggest success might just be producing our first lot of organic Dexter Beef… this has been a true labour of love and to say the ‘proof is in the pudding’ is an understatement… it’s simply the best beef I’ve ever tasted… big thanks to Laurence of our local Moran’s Butcher who did a superb job and included us in the process so we could decide what cuts work best for us etc.. a real learning curve. We hope 2023 will be the year for us to streamline this and bring our beef to market, watch this space..

It’s over 6 months since we embarked on the next phase of Fernwood farm’s development. An organic sheep farm on the Killary Fjord. It’s been another steep learning curve which we feel privileged to be on. We have many plans for this land which will unfold over time but for now it’s all about sheep!
