We love Sligo ❤️

Did you know County Sligo is located in the northwest of Ireland, in the province of Connacht. It's known for its stunning landscapes, including rugged coastlines, scenic mountains, lakes, and historical landmarks.

Geography: Sligo is bordered by County Mayo to the south, County Leitrim to the east, and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. The county is characterized by its varied geography, including the striking Benbulben mountain, the Ox Mountains, and several lakes such as Lough Gill

Capital and Major Towns: The county town is Sligo Town, a vibrant cultural center with a mix of modern and historical elements. Other towns in the county include Enniscrone, a popular seaside resort, and Ballymote, a historic market town.

History and Culture: Sligo has rich historical ties, especially to Irish mythology and the arts. It was home to the famous poet W.B. Yeats, and his legacy is celebrated throughout the county, particularly at the Yeats Society and Drumcliffe, where Yeats is buried. The county also has significant archaeological sites, including megalithic tombs like Carrowmore and Carrowkeel.

Tourism: Sligo is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts. It offers excellent hiking, surfing, and cycling opportunities, especially around Strandhill and Easkey. The Wild Atlantic Way, a coastal route, passes through parts of Sligo, attracting tourists for its dramatic views.

Economy: Traditionally, Sligo's economy was based on agriculture and fishing, though in recent years, it has seen growth in tourism, technology, and services. Sligo Town is an economic hub for the region.

Famous landmarks:

Benbulben: A flat-topped mountain and one of the county's most iconic landmarks.

Lissadell House: A historic mansion with ties to the famous Gore-Booth family, who were influential in Irish history.

Glencar Waterfall: A beautiful waterfall near the border with County Leitrim.

Culture and Festivals: Sligo is known for its vibrant cultural scene, including traditional Irish music, dance, and art. The county hosts the Sligo Summer Festival and Yeats Day to celebrate its literary and cultural heritage.

Sligo is a blend of natural beauty, history, and artistic legacy, making it a unique and attractive destination.

FYI

Cliffs of Moher - Section of trail opening this year is 'best case' - CLDC officer

Mr Hogan said the best scenario is that part of the 18km trail will open for the 2025 tourist season.

"The best case is that that the northern section trail opens. You will be open to walk from the Cliffs of Moher visitor centre to Doolin, or from Doolin to the centre," Mr Hogan said.

He added the southern section of the trail from the Centre to Hag’s Head will "definitely not" be open in 2025.

Full report below.

A key county Clare visitor attraction is set to be closed, or at least partially closed, for the 2025 tourist season.
