Dining with my son at The Imperial Hotel, Cork last night. Well known for its great food, lamb and steak here, superb! Apple crumble and brรปlรฉe over Christmas mince, sinful! Followed of course always by a pint of Beamish in my favourite pub in the world!
Frederick Douglass gave a speech in this hotel, and it was where Michael Collins spent his last night.

The "Titanic Cat" who foresaw the sinking and retrieved her babies before the ship sailed. ๐Ÿ˜ฎ
Jenny the cat was the Titanic's mascot, brought on board to help fight rodents. She lived in the ship's galley and was cared for by a laborer named Jim Mulholland.
During the sea trials, Jenny gave birth to kittens and Jim found them a comfortable place next to the ship's galley. Caring for the mother cat and her kittens broke up the monotony of Jim's work preparing the Titanic for sailing. Jenny seemed content with her warm place near the boilers, her babies, and the kitchen scraps that Jim brought her. However, as soon as the ship docked in Southampton, England, just before it began its maiden voyage (to New York), Jenny took a good look at her surroundings and quickly began grabbing her kittens by the necks and carrying them out. One by one, down the gangway she led them out of the ship.
Jim watched her carefully and realized that "this cat must know something that no one else does!". He then quickly gathered his few belongings and left the ship as well.
Years later, Irish Road published Jenny's story after a journalist spoke to a very old man - Jim, who told the story.
He survived thanks to the cat and her kittens who warned him.

Maureen O'Hara died nine years ago today. RIP

When filming in Cuba she often met with Fidel Castro (pictured) and Che Guevara and was particularly struck by Che's knowledge of Ireland.

"When we arrived in Havana on April 15, 1959 (filming 'Our Man in Havana'), Cuba was a country experiencing revolutionary change. How could I not meet Che? Che Guevara was often at the Capri Hotel. I would see him at the restaurant and he'd come to my table to say hello. Che would talk about Ireland and all the guerilla warfare that had taken place there. He knew every battle in Ireland and all of its history. Che knew more about Ireland than John Ford did. I couldn't believe it and finally asked, 'Che, you know so much about Ireland and talk constantly about it. How do you know so much?' He said, 'Well, my grandmother's name was Lynch and I learned everything I know about Ireland at her knee.' He was Che Guevara Lynch! That famous cap he wore was an Irish rebel's cap (black beret). I spent a great deal of time with Che Guevara while I was in Havana. I believe he was far less a mercenary than he was a freedom fighter. Today he is a symbol for freedom fighters wherever they are in the world and I think he is a good one."
