Connemara, often referred to as Europe’s last wilderness is one of the most beautiful natural landscapes not only in Ireland but in the entire world. Not that we'd in any way be biased 😁
Our valleys & peaks and beaches & bogs offer hikes, mountain walks and trails to make Connemara the perfect spot to explore on foot. That can be on two feet or four hooves.
Thanks to the Maumturks Walking Club and Connemara Equestrian Escapes for the pictures of what a walking or equestrian break to Connemara looks like.
Mountaineering Ireland
Ahead of the beginning of Phase 1 of the Roadmap for Recovery in the Republic of Ireland Mountaineering Ireland has prepared advice for hillwalkers and climbers to help make a safe and responsible return to hillwalking and climbing in the presence of Covid-19.
The full document can be reached via the following link:https://www.mountaineering.ie/_files/2020517151438_fcb60d39.pdf
We have also prepared two summary sheets - one for hillwalkers and one for climbers - these are available below.
The maximum distance you can travel from your home for the purpose of exercise or sport remains at 5km. This means that for the vast majority of us we cannot yet reach the hills or crags. For those of you who are lucky to live close enough to be able to enjoy some hillwalking or climbing please stay safe, and remember that you are now acting as ambassadors for us all.

COVID-19 UPDATE FOR ALL MOUNTAINEERING IRELAND MEMBERS - STAY HOME, STAY SAFE
Dear Members,
I hope that this communication reaches you, your families and loved ones in good health. We are all extremely concerned for the health and safety of all involved in the outdoor recreation and mountaineering communities. Engaging and enjoying the wonderful outdoor recreational activities that we have on offer all around the island of Ireland is what we are all used to doing.
However, with the ever-changing situation we are all faced with, the core priority of Mountaineering Ireland is to ensure that the health and safety of all our members is protected, for those people who use the hills, crags, mountains and indoor climbing walls, at this time of national emergency.
Therefore; my request to all of you is to:
Stay at home
Stay off the hills and mountains
Avoid travelling for exercise
By doing this, we will all play our part in fighting against this national and global emergency and hopefully support the work of the health services.

Call of The Wild Galway
presents Letterbreckaun Looped Hike, Maumturks.
“This is a strenuous grade 5-10hr looped walk in the wild Maumturks range. It starts gently before the tough climbing followed by gradual descent to a trail, which is often wet. Features spectacular mountain lakes, valleys, streams, passes and peaks (Barrlugrevagh, Letterbreckaun). Strong mountain boots with ankle support are necessary for the terrain of rocky mountain tops, open hillside, bog, trail and minor surfaced roads. The distance is about 15km with 960m of climbing so a very high level of fitness is required along with raingear, warm clothes, food and water. It will take somewhere between five and ten hours to complete, depending on the pace.”
Find out more about maps, access, ascent and descent routes in Paul Phelan’s "Connemara & Mayo, Mountain, Coastal & Island Walks - A Walking Guide" available instore.
NOTE:
It is advisable to always check the weather forecast ahead of attempting any hikes. As we are into more stormy conditions, the window of opportunity to attempt more exposed hikes safely is far more limited. Having some navigation skills with map and compass as well as essential hiking kit is recommended. Take care out there and happy hiking. :-)

presents Benglenisky, Bengower & Benlettery linear walk.
“A short difficult grade mountain hike taking in three adjacent peaks in the Twelve Bens. Features wild mountain landscape, stunning views and spectacular blanket bog. Distance is about 8km with over 630m of climbing taking four-six hours. Terrain includes steep open hillside, wet bogland and sheep track. There are a couple of very steep sections for which you will need to use your hands. This walk requires 2 cars but the walk can be extended to take in the Owenglin horseshoe.”

NOTE: Having some navigation skills with map and compass as well as essential hiking kit is recommended. This hike requires a very high level of mountain fitness, a head for heights and strong walking boots with good ankle support.

presents Doughruagh and Lemnaheltia overlooking Kylemore Abbey, East of Letterfrack in Connemara.
“This is a difficult grade 5-8 hour hike, with two mountains Lemnaheltia (Léim na hEilte, meaning "the doe's leap") and Doughruagh (Dúchruach, meaning "black stack") overlooking the beautiful kylemore and pollacappul lakes in the Northern Bens. It starts and ends at different points, so works best with two cars or lifts (the road between start and finish is very busy and can be dangerous, pack your high viz vest or jacket)
There are fine views of the sea and the surrounding mountains, featuring geology of lumpy igneous intrusion rock. It is a distance of 12.5km with about 820m of climbing with terrain including rocky mountain tops, steep open hillside, wet bog, sheep track and road.”

This Is Galway
So this is pretty class 🥳
“Brilliantly bohemian” Galway has been named “one of the world’s top cities for travellers in 2020” by travel guide Lonely Planet!!
Our lovely little city features fourth on the list of the top cities to visit in 2020, with Lonely Planet describing Galway as “arguably Ireland’s most engaging city”, where “brightly painted pubs heave with live music” and “cafes offer front-row seats to watch buskers perform”.
You can check the rest of the top 10 below...
