Very sad to hear this news - a real gentleman - RIP and thank you for all your hard work - condolences to Gerry’s family

Our esteemed former voluntary Lifeboat Operations Manager Gerry Turner passed away overnight and our sincere sympathies go to his wife Marjorie and family at this sad time.

He will be sorely missed, as for over 20 years both Gerry and Marjorie have been immersed in all the voluntary workings of our Lifeboat Station.

May our great friend and colleague Gerry rest in peace. He will be watching over us at our Naming Ceremony tomorrow Sat with the usual pride that he had always had for our Station

On this day 108 years ago, on May 1. 1915, RMS Lusitania sails out of New York from Pier 54 at 12:20 p.m. for the last time. It was her 201st Atlantic crossing. Sailing was delayed by a transfer of passengers from the Caronia. A number of prominent passengers receive anonymous telegrams warning them not to sail. A few hours after the vessel's departure, the Saturday evening edition of The Washington Times published two articles on its front page, both referring to those warnings.

On this day and in this very hour 108 years ago, on May 7, 1915, at about 02:30 PM, the RMS Lusitania sinks 11.5 miles (19 km) off the Old Head of Kinsale, Ireland, in only 18 minutes.
1,198 of 1,959 people aboard lose their lives.
