Luna and Jill got some lovely driftwood perches added to their aviaries to create some more environment enrichment for them. It looks lovely and the birds seem very happy to sit on them and pose.
Percy enjoyed a treetop view of the sunset in Di**le this evening
Our busiest public session so far, only the beginning of the season! Donât forget to book your falconry experience on our website www.kingdomfalconry.com and reserve your space now!
Two of our lovely guests brought us some special drawings of their favourite birds during yesterdayâs session. We absolutely love them, they will have a place on our office wall. Thank you to Naila and Arlo â¤ď¸
Mature themes đ- we have a budding romance at our new barn owl box⌠this is a great sign, perhaps a leading to a new generation of barn owls.
For International womanâs day we think itâs important to mention women in falconry across the globe by celebrating our hardworking woman here at Kingdom Falconry, Niamh and Emily, along with Jill the Harris hawk, Orla the Golden Eagle Fluffy the Eurasian Eagle Owl & Katy the Peregrine Falcon in our pictures
Great news! We have had some visitors at our barn owl box, hopefully theyâve decided that this house is good enough to lay some eggs đŚ
We made this guests dreams come true when he was able to meet a peregrine falcon and have such a close experience with him. Pat (Falcon) was brilliant and it was a lovely way for Billy to spend his birthday, what a treat!
Today is World wildlife day and Minnie our female Merlin is a great example of an elusive wild bird that can be seen here in Ireland. This gorgeous bird is Irelands smallest falcon, but by no means does this make them any less impressive. Merlinâs will be seen whizzing close to the ground after smaller birds using a surprise attack. They can also be seen diving vertically, looking very similar to Peregrine Falcons but on a smaller scale, with long pointed wings and a narrow tail. Males are smaller and have grey/blue upper parts. Itâs said that they utilize uplands, blanket bog and heath but they are a rare ground breeding bird in Ireland. We had the pleasure of seeing one recently on the Di**le peninsula mobbing a Peregrine falcon so it proves how feisty they can be!
Our public sessions will be running again from the 1st of March. Book online or enquire now for spaces!
An exciting opportunity to join the Kingdom Falconry team has become available. A full time position for the upcoming season, with potential to extend. Experience with handling birds is preferred but not required as full training will be provided. Salary will depend on experience.

Last year we had a phone call about a barn owl nesting box, which was near our falconry, that had fallen with some young owlets inside it. Sadly the 3 babies didnât make it due to the shock and injuries sustained during the fall. The box looked like it had fallen due to the wood rotting away after years of rain and not being regularly maintained. The parents and babies poo and cast pellets through the their time in the box and this will of course take its toll on the structural integrity. To prevent this from happening again we are putting a brand new box in its place and going to monitor it regularly to aid our local barn owl population. Itâs important that the structure is strong enough and that itâs put in a secure place for the safety of the owls. When the owls arenât nesting itâs always good to check that the bottom of the box hasnât rotten and make sure it is still secured to its original location.
These barn owl nesting boxes were sourced locally and are durable and strong so they will be long lasting. Weâve filled them with some nesting materials to give them a head start.
We will be placing a few more in new locations on the Di**le peninsula to do our part in helping to aid this beautiful species off of the red list here in Ireland. If youâd like to get involved and place your own boxes, do not hesitate to message us for contacts and any questions.
âTwas the night before Christmas, the birds have their stockings up ready for their treats from Santa

A very sad update.đ The barn owl that arrived into care almost a week ago showing signs of secondary rodenticide poisoning didnât make it.đ
We were so hopeful for the little one and provided everything possible to try and pull him through. Itâs just heartbreaking.đ
Sadly cases like this are all too common. With the lack of any regulation or restrictions around the purchase and use of rodenticides by the public we hope that posts like this one will make you think twice before using them.
The Barn Owl Project
A few more bits of environmental enrichment added to our owls aviaries. Boreas and Lilly (our snowies) have a lovely planter filled with heather and Gonzo a nice log of Ash that was going to waste, weâve repurposed it. The birds were a little confused of their new arrangements at first but you can see within hours they were interacting with it.
In most species of birds and mammals, males are generally larger than females. In raptors, however, this pattern is reversed, with females typically larger than males. This size dimorphism is apparent in this pair of Cooperâs hawks, where the female (on the right) is noticeably bigger than her mate. Male Cooperâs hawks can weigh up to about 14 and a half ounces and measure 15 inches in height, while females weigh up to 24 ounces and may measure nearly 18 inches.
