Monasterboice in County Louth is a must-visit for history enthusiasts exploring Ireland's medieval past. Founded in the 5th century by Saint Buithe, this site is famous for its stunning High Crosses, particularly Muiredachโs Cross. Standing 5.5 meters tall, this 10th-century masterpiece features intricate biblical carvings and is considered Irelandโs finest High Cross.
The site also boasts the West Cross, the tallest in Ireland at nearly 7 meters, and a well-preserved 28-meter round tower. Visitors can explore these along with the North Cross, two 14th-century churches, and an ancient sundial. Monasterboice is easily accessible, just off the M1 motorway near Drogheda, and is open year-round with no admission fee.
This is the Passion Window by Harry Clarke, located in the Augustinian Church on Shop Street, Drogheda. Harry Clarke was an Irish stained glass artist known for his intricate, vividly colored windows. Clarke's stained glass often featured dark, mystical themes inspired by literature like Edgar Allan Poe, as well as his Catholic faith. His unique style, blending detailed patterns with rich, intense colors, made him one of the 20th century's most celebrated stained glass artists.
The Passion Window, installed in 1928 and restored in 1994, is dedicated to Fr. Jim Kiely OSA and commemorates Fr. Denis Augustine Crotty. This masterpiece, found at the rear of the church, is a must-see for its exquisite detail and remarkable history.
